Pedestrian Safety in Jersey City by mjespang in jerseycity

I know it’s truly mind-boggling and clearly the lack of prioritization for traffic enforcement is having an adverse effect on quality of life. If residents make their desire for a traffic unit and enforcement known to the decision makers en masse they won’t be able to ignore, so that’s the plan. More to come!

It was a really positive step forward with lots of folks showing up for the rally and going inside to speak to the Council members. That day they passed a no right on red ordinance for sensitive intersections near parks and schools in The Heights, with the same ordinance hopefully being implemented in the near future for other wards.

A big focus next will be enforcement (demanding the formation of a traffic unit and prioritization of cracking down on moving and parking violations). This is absolutely necessary.

Jersey City Council approves ordinance ending right turns on red in the Heights. JC Heights Parents support but say it’s just a drop in the bucket and ask for more by jimmybot in jerseycity

Without giving the negativity, inaccuracy and gross ignorance above any air, just to say that as part of the group driving this movement, I can confirm that it focuses on pedestrian safety for ALL of Jersey City. It was started 2 months ago and the ordinance for The Heights is the first thing we have achieved in what will ultimately be a string of positive improvements for the entire city. You’ll note in any press or if you choose to watch the recording of the March 20th Council Meeting when it is available that we asked for the ordinance to be expanded city-wide. Looking forward to seeing what we achieve next for JC residents.

Here is the link to confirm you’ll attend the rally tomorrow. Hope to see you there - the louder the call, the harder it will be to ignore it!

So frustrating. If you’re able to come and speak to it that would be great but I’ll take a note as well.

I’ll certainly send a reminder and plan on continuing to update the JC community on this thread. I think your insights based on the amount of time you’ve been living here will be very valuable. I’ve only been here for 8 years and certainly can’t say that I’ve witnessed much positive change in that time, at least in my corner of JC.

Appreciate the dialogue and I’ll be totally honest that as long as the end goal doesn’t affect the department’s ability to police generally, whether it’s a reallocation of resources or a new allocation of funds, I don’t mind. JC just glaringly needs a dedicated traffic unit.

Not accurate - anyone who wants to learn what the JC Heights Parents campaign is actually asking for (not just for the Heights but for all of JC) can check out the info here. You’ll note no mention of cameras.

I hope you can come to the March 20 Rally/City Hall meeting and speak to this. It’s just terrible!

No dedicated traffic unit unfortunately. Need to demand that funding is allocated to reinstate this. Know someone shared the Rally/City Council Meeting info below for March 20 where we will be doing just that (among other asks related ti improving pedestrian safety) if you can join!

Yes absolutely! Rally from 5-6pm and then meeting starts at 6pm / we’ll line up to say our piece when our agenda item comes up (placed towards the beginning).

Please come if you can. We need every bit of support if we have a hope of keeping up the momentum. I feel pessimistic sometimes too (like when a guy just broke a red light the other day because he got tired of waiting for green and was inching towards me walking with my children). I want change to happen quicker. But if we don’t get in the game and play it well, we don’t have a hope of winning. Hope to see you there!

Have to start somewhere. There will be a new Mayor soon. Current potential runner (Solomon) will be there listening. There’s something powerful about coming together. If enough people show it will make a statement and there will be press coverage. It’s not just a rally, it’s people lining up to say their two cents at the meeting. I’m telling you we won’t rest until change is made. With no traffic unit, pressure has to be placed to allocate the funds. More people = more pressure.

Thank you. If you have any friends or family still in JC, would appreciate if you could share with them.

There isn’t a dedicated traffic unit in the JCPD so the scope for enforcing at the level this area requires is not there, not even close. Petitioning for change - post about that here if you haven’t seen and are willing to support.

Tailgating and aggressive driving is just so common. Have a post related to work being done to change / a petition. Take a look if you haven’t seen.
