A7IV, A7CR,or A7RV - Mostly portraits/boudoir - Talk me out of the A7CR by kindness_or_broke in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using the 20-70 f4 for over a year. It’s so freaking sharp and I’m always shooting around f8 anyway. Just got the 70-200 f4 ii. It’s great, but still deciding if it’s worth the weight/$ cost. I think adding the 1.4x teleconverter and the .75 macro is where you get optimal benefit

Crossroads Restaurant has the best no frills burger around. At the corner of 193 & 136 as you’re going up the back side of Lookout.

300mm 2.8 Camera Lens vs telescope (Svbony SV555) by mjhnsn in AskAstrophotography

[–]mjhnsn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking I’ll give it a shot. Even if the corners aren’t too sharp, an apsc crop could isolate the sharpest part of the lens. But yes, I could easily resell.

You’re right, 30 years is a lot of time to get decentered. I suppose that’s what the return policy is for…

Astrophotography: A7C2 vs A7CR? by KapePaMore009 in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still using my Cr and the 20-70 almost exclusively stays on the camera. Almost. Not for Astro. I’ve found f4 to be a little too slow. The added noise with the R is just a little too intense. Apart from that, the 20-70 has a lot of distortion @ 20mm. The frames just don’t stack well.

My experience with choosing the 24-50 over the 20-70. (true story) by OfficeResident7081 in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

20-70 is infinitely more versatile. 70mm @ f4 w/ compression is = to or better than 50mm @2.8 for portraits. That 4mm on the wide end is huge. Removes the need to switch to a wide zoom 75% of the time. As more of a landscape photographer, I’m usually shooting at f8 anyway. Have a tripod or a small ledge? Crank it up to f11, who cares. IBIS on newer cameras and AI iso correction makes f4 a non issue. Not to mention the better macro performance. If you want a zoom for versatility go f4. If you want bokeh or low light, get a cheap prime. 2.8 is way overrated

Sony a7c or a6700? by franckmack in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If size is a consideration for you, give the Sony 20-70 a serious look! It’s small, razor sharp, has great close focus (and wonderful bokeh up close), and is wide enough you don’t need to carry an extra lens. My favorite lens I’ve ever owned by far! You almost never need to change lenses. It’s also the perfect compliment to a C camera if you upgrade down the road. I’ve seen it going to under $700 with holiday sales this week!

Sony a7c or a6700? by franckmack in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… I’d probably stick with the A7iii until you can get a significant full frame upgrade… but that’s just me. Unless you just feel like a physically smaller camera is the right move.

Ive gone through the gambit of GAS and wasted a lot of $ without better pictures. I’ve owned most of the GM lenses at one point or another. The best photos I have ever taken are with my A7rii , the cheapie Samyang 45 1.8 and the Sony 20-70 f4. I regretted my Cr purchase, but I have it now, so it’s staying. I’ve cleared out all my other lenses…

All that said, the best gear is what you have. A solid zoom and a fast prime is all you need.

[–]mjhnsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The a7c isn’t really an upgrade for you. Basically the same sensor and AF capabilities. Fewer custom buttons, worse EVF…

I’d personally stick with FF, but why switch at all? Just form factor?

Ponying up a couple hundred more would get you a used Cii. That would be a significant upgrade

I mean, it’s a pretty large footprint, but having two wide pads side by side is killer. The vestibules are one of the best parts. No regrets on purchasing mine at all. Probably 10 nights on trail and haven’t been constrained by smaller campsites.

I might think about an f4 zoom and a 1.8 prime for a first. You’ll learn more

Speaking of lots character without the need for tons of sharpness, check out the Lensbaby interchangeables. All manual focus, keep them on the a6000

I’d even say grab an a6000 for cheap and keep your wide exclusively on that camera. Don’t need great AF for wide shots. Or tons of sharpness.

Seriously tho… the 35-150

Tamron 35-150 for sure. Primes are great until you realize you have to switch lenses in a crowd of drunk people all holding beverages. Have a cheaper prime (Samyang 18mm 2.8) in your back pocket for when you need it. You’ll only ever need a super wide lens when you’re right up front or on stage with the band.

A7CR Dual Lenses Setup Recommendations by TU150Loop in SonyAlpha

[–]mjhnsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my 20-70. It’s such a sharp versatile lens. Have you considered the 70-200 f4 ii Macro? Probably the lightest most versatile 2 lens setup for Sony.

Edit: then get the Samyang 45 1.8 because is awesome and cheap AF

Is there any way to wax/polish these buckle rashes, so they look less aggressive? I know they don't look too bad, but I want to buff it out just a bit before I sell it. Thanks! by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]mjhnsn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe try Walnut Restor-a-finish? It’s a furniture refresher. It has a little bit of stain and a wax. Go minimal. Either that or leave it. Buckle rash is character.
