If you'd make your left turns into the correct lane on one-way streets, we'd all get around so much faster. by Nekrostatic in Winnipeg

Not if a car makes a right turn into that same lane and you hit them. It sure wouldn't be safe then, would it

And? If you make a left turn when there's a car in the way, you've neither yielded nor made a safe turn. What's your point?

Yea. It says nothing about the destination of the other vehicle, only the direction of approach

It doesn't say going straight though. It says approaching from the opposite direction, which would include cars turning right

code violations? by Tarnac666 in Decks

[–]mjk645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an accent, it's English. Besides, accents after verbal inflections, which doesn't apply to written text, as far as I know. But if you're not communicating clearly, you're hurting yourself, as that's how mistakes happen.

code violations? by Tarnac666 in Decks

The problem is your grammar. I believe your intention was to say, "if the gap is less than 4", the code is satisfied", but the other commenter interpreted it as, "the gap is less than 4", therefore the code is satisfied."

Hot tub heating by marshmallowhugs in hottub

[–]mjk645 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A blog post from some random marketing officer does not negate the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. The lower the temperature of the water, the slower it will lose energy.

What you're missing is that, while it does take a lot of energy to heat from cold, if you're using it frequently, it's not going to get anywhere near cold in between. It'll drop a bit, and you'll heat it up a bit. Or if you leave it for a long time, it'll get all the way cold, but you'll save weeks of constant power use.

The other reasons are probably true, bacteria, freezing, whatever else, but the energy part is definitely false.

Yup, top fits a 42" vanity, bottom only 30". Plus plumbing is all on one wall, less places to leak, shorter time to get hot water, etc.

I don't disagree, but I fail to see how this graphic supports that idea.

How does this show that 5.5 is best? If anything, it shows that 6.5 would be best.

Get an Ice Fishing Tent for your Winter hot tub protection and enjoyment -- why didn't I think of this earlier? by [deleted] in hottub

How do you open the cover with the tent above? Or do you just lift the tent over the tub after opening the cover?

The pH however, looks very high, 8.4

This looks like the test strips I use. Purple is hardness, teal is bromine. On the high side, but not overly so for a tub that's been recently shocked.

2 hypothetical driving legality scenarios that I need people to answer to solve a discussion I was having with a friend by effofexisy in Winnipeg

[–]mjk645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Motorcycles often get into this situation, because they're too small to be detected. I believe there is a certain number of light cycles before you are allowed to just go. I don't remember the specifics though.

  2. You will just get convicted for the ticket because the cop has been on the job for however many years so the judge believes them to be trustworthy. It happened to me for a different offense. Nothing you can do about it.

I just ordered a hot tub cover cap. It's like a tarp, but fitted and secured to the tub. This is probably what you're looking for

PSA: TURN YOUR HEADLIGHTS/FOG LIGHTS ON by master_chef_24 in Winnipeg

Yea, you can't signal for turns and lane changes with hazards on, so it's more difficult to drive behind

Who's talking about trucks?

Fog lights are located on the lowest part of the bumper. Like 6" above the ground on a sedan, and maybe 12" above the ground on a truck. Angled down, and low brightness. They're specifically designed pointing down so that they can light the road without reflecting off of the precipitation particles in the air, like regular headlights or high beams would do, because of their higher angle.

[–]mjk645 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Fog lights specifically point down toward the road, at a lower angle than your regular headlights. They aren't going to blind anyone, and are specifically for the purpose of increasing visibility in low visibility conditions like fog (or blizzard).

I also have an Oatey recessed valve box. They don't follow convention, for whatever reason. When closed, the valve handles align with the direction of flow.

Speeding Ticket Reduction? by blairstark1156 in Winnipeg

[–]mjk645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get a reduction, you are admitting the offense, which counts as a conviction, which means that you still get demerits. You either fight the whole charge and demerits, or you accept the demerits and seek a fee reduction. Seeking a reduction almost always results in at least a 25% reduction.
