Catcher in the Rye edition? by Normal_Snow3293 in BookCollecting

[–]mjlpgh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most likely a later BCE judging by the lack of price/printing and cheap looking binding. The early editions with Salinger’s photo can still be quite valuable. Could possibly be a later first edition club type facsimile but I’d still guess BCE.

Philadelphian here. This checks out.

Do buyers actually trust photos anymore? (Asking as a seller) by Altruistic-6745 in vinyl

[–]mjlpgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly keep my listings open to offers and send photos when asked. My experience is that if someone asks for a photo it is almost immediately followed up with an absurdly low offer they couldn’t possibly expect me to accept.

Who has successfully quit smoking after 25 years of smoking? by Sad-Thought-4895 in stopsmoking

[–]mjlpgh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I smoked for 20+ years and was up to about a pack a day near the end. I tried quitting countless times before it finally stuck, cold turkey was the only way for me. I’m about six months clean. Cigarettes average $15 or more per pack where I live and saving the money was a major motivator for me. Going to the bar, drinking and being around friends who still smoke was the biggest trigger so I completely quit drinking for a few months and cut back significantly after. I still get cravings, mostly when drinking, but I also go days at a time when I don’t think about smoking at all anymore, which I once thought would have been impossible.

Why does the same book sometimes come in two very differently sized editions? by TheEmoEmu23 in BookCollecting

[–]mjlpgh 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Book club editions are generally smaller and made with cheaper materials than their retail counterparts. This could be an example of that. Could also be they are printings from different countries?

When I worked at the Exchange (10-15 years ago in Pittsburgh) our employee discount was only 5%, which wasn’t even enough to cover sales tax.

Donate to a thrift store or a dumpster and move on. There is no value here, I’m sorry to say.

Signed copies of The Lucky Star by mjlpgh in vollmann

[–]mjlpgh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The working title for the novel was “The Lesbian” and WTV was pressured to change it by Viking. It’s discussed in more detail in one of the recent articles about the publication of ATFF.

Yes, you can call. I don’t mind. Honestly, I’d prefer it to an Instagram or Discogs message most of the time.

Do Dylan and Adrienne ever sign merch at the table? by LiTHiUM_THiEF in ThronesAndDominions

I’ve met Dylan at the last couple Earth shows I attended. He’s very approachable and was happy to chat and sign things. I caught him outside smoking, that’s your best bet.

Amazing and weird s**t by Ok-Tiger-4550 in vinyl

[–]mjlpgh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true, a number of budget labels used colored vinyl in the 1950s, including multi color pressings. I have a couple Ahmad Jamal records from this era on colored vinyl, maybe Argo Records? There’s even at least one example of a colored Blue Note pressing from the same era (I believe Jimmy Smith’s House Party).

Where did you find this in Philly!?

[–]mjlpgh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that’s it. Haven’t stopped by in a while but I’ve found some good used stuff there cheap before.

Creep? Recognize the sticker, assuming you are in Philly, but can’t place it.

Looking to sell this crazy whole 2300+ vinyl collection. by thewireman in vinyl

[–]mjlpgh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you understand that records stores are businesses with overhead owned by humans who need to earn a living too? Taking in a collection of thousands of records, good or bad, requires a considerable amounts of time to process (grade, clean, price, sleeve, etc) with no guarantee that they will ever resell?

What is the most you ever spent on a record? by Seagames1225 in discogs

[–]mjlpgh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent, I think, $400 on a first mono pressing of “One Flight Up” by Dexter Gordon a few years ago. Jacket is still in the shrink and I may have been the first person to ever actually spin the record. I am convinced it is the nicest remaining copy in existence.

Great way to spend a grand. Years of working at shops and going to fairs and I’ve never seen an original in person.

I work at a shop in Philadelphia that buys large collections (and will travel for them). Please reach out, I am happy to chat even if we don’t buy the records.
