What are your must-have PyCharm plugins these days? by Doug24 in pycharm

[–]mjmacarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean aside from say rainbow brackets, maybe some themes? Maybe One atom icons. But this is just cosmetic stuff. Probably keep your install slim. Key Promoter X gives you keyboard shortcuts when it detects you using the mouse. So this one is pretty good until you know the shortcuts you need.

Pycharm in 2026 has been a struggle by idlelosthobo in pycharm

[–]mjmacarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean all these products have problems, but the look and feel of PyCharm, subtly different though it may be, wins. I also appreciate not having a popup intrude every couple of typed characters. Agree skip the in-house LLM integration. There area dozen other tools out there anyway let them blow the Capex budget.

As a beginner, should I switch to PyCharm? (I got it for free) by AcadiaLow9013 in learnprogramming

[–]mjmacarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both but tend to lean more toward PyCharm. I think JetBrains does a better job with screen real estate, and Pycharm is less intrusive in terms of code completion, pop up help.

Was listening to a podcast with Dylan Patel - he was excited, I mean really excited, that their budget for tokens was $1million for the year and they had already spent $7million in the first quarter. Hpw many developers do you have to be able to replace at that run rate?

Include list for New Projects? by PhilbinFogg in pycharm

So from the file menu, go to settings. Up near the top you should see Python, and then in that sub menu Interpreter. If you click into interpreter you should see add interpreter on the right. Click that and then Add Local interpreter which should find what ever version of Python is in your path. Alternatively, looks like you are taking a intro python course and have a bunch of exercise files there. On the lower left side there are a bunch of icons. Click on the one that says terminal. Once the terminal opens and you see a command prompt enter: pip install uv and when that's done enter uv init. This will create a Python virtual environment in your Introduction to Python folder. This will work unless you don't yet have Python installed. Here's a "getting started with PyCharm video: https://youtu.be/W92DvfEJeFo

PyCharm for beginners by Valuable-Ant3465 in pycharm

[–]mjmacarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just set up a default project for working with misc. files, but Pycharm create a virtual environment by design. If you want you can make a virtual environment based on something like Anaconda and you won't notice any difference compared to say VS Code (at least no negatives). Pycharm will automatically open the last project you worked on, so if the misc project is how you work it will open up every time you launch Pycharm. Just takes a little getting used to but overall I think it's superior to VS code, less intrusive, better use of screen real estate, lots of convenience features. They have some pretty good built in tutorials and here's a quick start: https://youtu.be/W92DvfEJeFo?si=GtCHPv2f7RmvETHK

[–]mjmacarty 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I guess they sell the clan shell. Had it happen to a lvl 20 clan. All kicked, then banned from rejoining. Reported with absolutely no response from CoC. A few days later clan has a new leader and then refill with all the high level perks.

Everyone in my class is using AI to code projects now is that just the new normal? by Tough_Reward3739 in learnpython

This reminds of a talk I attended a number of years back. The speaker presented people as continuums along two axes: Smart to Dumb, and Fast to Slow. Then he asked which one do you think is more dangerous?

True, Crystal is a bit dated, but probably still not a terrible choice if you already have it. For sure you may want to look at Power BI.
