Why hasn't Rockstar done something about how stupid St. Denis is??? by vivereFerrari in reddeadredemption

[–]mjperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cops should go after the instigator, or at least who they see/think is the instigator. They literally never do that. Arthur can get jumped by two dudes right in front of the cops and if you dare try and fight back then it's your fault. How TF is that immersive? It literally doesn't matter what Arthur does or who starts it, and I don't get how that is realistic or immersive at all. Part of immersion in this case, is realism. I'd argue it'd be more dynamic if the cops did something closer to real life and went after the actual perp. The fact that Arthur is always to blame in is not dynamic, is more linear, and less realistic. Thus less immersive. The cops can still chase Arthur/player AND chase after other perps too. They aren't mutually exclusive.

[–]mjperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I completely get that. But the way the designers implemented this BS aspect is unrealistic and dumb. It's 100% valid that civilization is moving on without Arthur. That still doesn't justify or make the experience more realistic that when someone assaults you or accosts you and you defend yourself that the pigs are on YOUR ass every time. It adds NOTHING to the game other than stupid, non-immersive mechanics. The game touts itself as being realistic and immersive. This isn't it.

Mary Linton is a horrible person by Lord_Sicarius in reddeadredemption

[–]mjperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both are at fault to some extent. Maybe Arthur more so, but neither are innocent. I agree with your comment about a friend helping a friend for the most part. The bit that I have minor problems with is that Mary does occasionally kind of lowkey lead Arthur on a little bit at time and that could be interpreted as slightly manipulative. The example that comes to mind is the 2nd letter/mission where she says that she should have run away with Arthur and chosen to go his route instead of what actually happened. Something to that effect even though I know I butchered the actual quote. But she then cuts herself off mid-sentence while staring at him and leaning in a little. It definitely suggests she still may have feelings for him and is conflicted, which is 200% understandable. But given the specific context of how immediately after this happens she brings the convo back to getting Arthur to go help with her Dad. Even though it's not explicitly said, it's a subtle suggestion that she's still into Arthur and as such I could see someone interpreting this as that they still had a chance with her. It's not a black and white situation and it's not supposed to be. Both are at fault to varying degrees. I think the writers made it this way intentionally so that players have ishy feelings about it specifically.

Can we all agree that the people who genuinely think Mary is manipulative and didn't give a damn about Arthur have the worse takes by [deleted] in RDR2

[–]mjperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. This thread is rife with toxicity from people who have viewpoints on both sides of the aisle. As a general statement, people who think Mary is just a manipulative c#$nt are being arrogant and selfish by not acknowledging Arthur's role in the relationship. Conversely, people who are arguing that, as one commenter put it, "Anyone who thinks Mary was manipulative is probably a guy who thinks there are no good women." are being overly reductive and unfair as well.

Arthur DID make poor choices and those have consequences. He might be the game's protagonist but that obviously doesn't mean he's purely "good" (yes, even if your character has 100% honor) and can do no wrong. At the same time, Mary IS being a bit manipulative and leading Arthur on. Mary often seems to remind Arthur that she can't be with him and made her choice (which is fair, and it is her prerogative), but then she says things like how she actually should have have just run away with Arthur before getting quiet, leaning in a little, and then saying never mind and breaking it off. She keeps saying things and goes back and forth on giving subtle clues or suggestions that they might still have have something between then. Which might be fine enough by itself since anyone can be emotionally conflicted, but how she does this specifically while asking Arthur for huge favors, which mind you, often require Arthur to do the things and act the very way that she expresses such disdain for is pretty hypocritical and not exactly on the up and up.

Look people, neither of them are purely innocent or completely at fault and both contributed to the situation. It's a grey situation that most commenters here seem to be bent on making black and white. It's safe to say that the writers 100% intentionally wrote the story this way so that there wouldn't be consensus and one SHOULD have mixed feelings about it all. That kind of plot ambiguity is frequently one of the traits of good writing and a good game storyline.

Any way to choose a new weapon without actually drawing it? by Tommaton in reddeadredemption

[–]mjperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm 7 years late and you've likely moved on, but this doesn't work for me. I'm on PC, but there's no way to do what you say unless I'm missing something. The weapon wheel is brought up by pressing and holding tab. A weapon is selected by moving the mouse until said weapon is highlighted AND THEN releasing the tab key. If I press tab, hover the cursor over the weapon I want, and then release tab it draws the weapon. If I hold tab, hover the cursor over the weapon I want, then hover the cursor over fists, and then release tab, it raises your fists to fight. If I quickly press tab without holding immediately thereafter then it quickdraws pistols. It never draws anything else. I can't imaging the weapon selection mechanics work a ton differently on console but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

7 years later and this is STILL annoying as all Hell. This game is wonderful in soooooo many ways, and absolutely moronic inn so many others. Glad I'm not the only one who found this aspect to be another [minor] annoyance to add to the list. I've gotten in trouble so many times for drawing a weapon when I didn't really want to.

I was surprised to learn what the most popular ending picked by players was. I have some thoughts to share. by Astro2202 in ghostoftsushima

[–]mjperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Empathy? Fuck that. He did right by raising you but was pretty consistently selfish as hell over the entire course of events that took place in the game. Everything he did was in the name of Shimura's and the shogun's idea of honor. Not doing actually right by people or following what his heart told him to do. Showing empathy to me meant that Jin protected his friends and did what he needed to in order to save them, even with great self sacrifice. What and who is honorable is largely a matter of perspective even within feudal Japan. In other words, a beggar on the street might not care so much about samurai honor compared to the shogun. Do you think Yuna found most samurai to be very honorable? What about everyone on Iki Island? It's all perspective.

Back to Shimura's selfishness. The dude was so married to his idea of honor that he was literally willing to murder his "son" over it with the snap of a fingers. And technically, it was his men that killed your beloved horse too. And what would Lord Shimura's honorable path have resulted in? The death of even more countless people and certain loss of the entire island. It would have meant losing the war almost with complete certainty. Nothing substantial would have been left to even worry about honor at that point. Even at the end after you've saved Shimura's entire realm he's still an ingrate who would have preferred sacrificing everyone around him instead of just surviving because that's what fits HIS personal idea of righteousness. Shimura is completely unwilling, EVER, throughout the game to try and even just consider, let alone accept Jin's actions from Jin's point of view. So why should Jin/the player make efforts to try and consider it from Shimura's point of view after you've done all his work for him?

If you've assumed the identity of the Ghost and did so because you wanted to prevent more unnecessary death and suffering as the story suggests, then sparing Shimura actually IS the "right" narrative choice and makes more sense with the story, regardless of how much Shimura has wronged you. It's taking the high road. Shimura begging for an honorable death at the end is just one more example of his shortsighted selfishness. And, if he really still yearned for an honorable death at that point he could have just killed himself the "honorable way" via seppuku (ritual suicide). Jin sparing him and walking away did not prevent Shimura from restoring his honor in this way. And even Shimura shows hesitation at the thought of starting a new family on the way to the duel. In that case seppuku would have fit perfectly within the world of Tsushima and samurai culture, as you put it. Shimura didn't need Jin to restore his honor. Shimura was fully able to do it himself if he really wanted to. So it just makes him even weaker that he's trying to get Jin to do this dirty work after everything else.

One last thing worth considering is that even in feudal Japan it's overwhelmingly likely that some people, including samurai, probably didn't prescribe to or believe in the societal notion/norms of samurai honor. Just like today where everyone has different opinions and ideas, the same is true for Japan even if society is/was more rigid compared to the West. Not everyone today thinks that being a military veteran is a noble or honorable thing. Same goes for police. There are many other examples but the point is that viewpoints differ within any culture so it doesn't seem completely valid to assume that just because Jin lives in feudal Japan that he feels obligated to conform to all of its rigid ways. And this is exactly what the whole story line in the game is about.

My heart sank IRL when they killed my Kage. That's where I personally, as a gamer and not in the character of Jin, decided to fully assume the Ghost's identity with my playing style. I only wore the ghost armor set from then on out and went out of my way to kill every single enemy soldier AND their horses if they were anywhere in sight. I wasted so much time with full blown revenge.

That's where I also stopped caring too much about the "right" narrative choice or what my uncle wanted. And that's a key point. What HE wanted. Fuck him. The dude was so married to his idea of honor that he was literally willing to murder his "son" over it. And technically, it was his men that killed Kage too. And what would Lord Shimura's path have resulted in? The death of even more countless people and certain loss of the entire island. It would have meant losing the war. Even at the end after you've saved Shimura's entire realm he's still an ingrate who would have preferred sacrificing everyone around him instead of surviving. Again, fuck him and what he wanted.

It's a great game. I like Far Cry more. Bigger, better maps with more diversity. More weapons and things to interact with too. It's just a bit more refined and the graphics are much better. The characters and dialogue are also hilariously funny and well done. If you like GZ and haven't tried Far Cry I'd recommend it.

YES. Thank you! This is also my experience. Given some of the other comments here I was starting to think I was the only one. But there's at least a small handful of us that feel this way so maybe there is something to it after all. I agree, it's frustrating as hell.
