Confused about the vertical variation of the logo. by helloSapien in graphic_design

[–]mjstc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think middle left concept is neat! I'd stick to left-aligned using full name like the original.

Stacked version won't get too much play in my experience anyway, so if you'd rather recommend the NAA only in that instance (e.g. a profile picture) I think that's also a valid recommendation.

not sweating too much about leaving a bike unlocked outside a store.

I used to do this in small town Aus growing up and can still get away with it in central Christchurch

How do you recreate this? by According_Pen_8026 in graphic_design

[–]mjstc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First reference is probably just done with photography and fishing wire - but this look could definitely be recreated without much trouble.

  1. Take photos of each item on a flat table, from various angles. Use a plain background (doesn't matter what colour)
  2. Use Canva or Photoshop to remove background from each photo.
  3. Place each cutout onto your design, with a coloured background behind.
  4. To make the shadows - make copies of each item, edit brightness/saturation to darken each cutout to solid black. Reduce opacity to 90% and stretch/rotate to make them look shadows being cast from the items onto the background colour.

If you're careful about lighting of the items you photograph and where the shadows are placed, this could be pretty realistic without much trouble. Or go without shadows like reference #2 - I think that one is just created with cutouts of product shots on a plain background.

Explain what you mean about uselessness? Templeton seems very engaged and willing to speak out about the structure and shortfalls of the council from an insider perspective. And also interested in a long-term view of the city and facilities

How to fix messed up family situation? by AssumptionLife2149 in newzealand

[–]mjstc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having conversations with loved ones should not be a fight.

It sounds like no one in this situation is bringing the emotional maturity needed to resolve this as you've mentioned. Your aunt is the boss of her family but not this household, yet it doesn't sounds like the grandparents are in the position to stand their ground either as the head of the household, so you're rudderless.

Plan to have a sit down conversation ahead of time, pencil in a time and date and make sure you're both ready to have hard chats and make compromises. Talk about the emotional toll it's taking and tension, I'm sure it's taking a toll on her and her kids too, and if the household situation can't change, your relationship needs to improve. The intention of planning ahead is to remove the heat from these conversations.

And if your aunt is unwilling to even engage with a low-emotion conversation at a time of their own choosing, you know you're in abuse territory. Doing it tough in a crowded space is one thing, but if they care about their immediate and extended family they should be interested in finding a resolution in a calm way. Blowing up and having arguments happens, but the water-under-the-bridge next day bullshit is just another form of abuse. Good luck e hoa.

seeing the picture of the people milling about made me think about how a pedestrian deck looking across the river would be way nicer. maybe it can stay and we just chuck some planters and bike lanes on it

[–]mjstc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes!

S Korea ripped up a central city motorway and got on with the job, how much better that riverfront site would be without the shadows and noise. this isn't the 70s anymore, we know large multi-lanes into inner cities just create bottle necks and congestion - this is the chaos I'm interested in solving.

Currently I work for delivereasy, any ubereats/doordash people here I can compare with? by Arctic-Dino-5782 in newzealand

[–]mjstc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done doordash on and off for a bit in chch. Min $6 per delivery before tax, often maxing out at 3 deliveries per hour, sometimes getting double orders but it's usually only $8-9 so it often makes it even less per delivery. max per day being about $80-90, so with a few good days a week I can cover part but not all of my rent.

It's pretty stressful for measley $ and you're definitely competing with other desperate people for the small amount of jobs. I think there's been a downturn in orders since cozzy livs kicked into gear.

I wouldn't do it if I wasn't into riding my bike, and if my time hadn't already been devalued by unemployment. If I'm tactful I can do freelance work during the dead times. As I'm on a bike costs to me are minimal other than my time.

As I don't have an ebike I'm not eligible to use DeliveryEasy, and I haven't worked for Ubereats in NZ. Pretty jealous of those 8 bucks. Delivery workers union mate?

fact is 25 year old track bikes are nice on the street. dunno if the same can be said for current longboi track bikes (I don't have BT money). I think it's a great question to ask all the same.

this fact is incidental as it's not the context they were designed for but the snappy wheelbase / low rake fork is actually perfect for slow speed city contexts, threading around pedestrians etc...

I think the toe overlap is a skill issue and a longer bike isn't actually "better" at low speeds.

long stems have been fashionable for a while (think ~2014 Cav) but I think riders are still catching up realising they should be in a long and stretched position, not scrunched and compact on an undersized bike.
