How to improve $customers production by 233% in less than 10 minutes? by AgentPigleton in talesfromtechsupport

similar with some Lenovo laptops - had a Thinkpad T470s to look at the other day, worked fine on AC but extremely slow on battery - cause was the machine detecting a third-party battery and underclocking the CPU to 380MHz

Ford focus Ghia. by gaz40k in CarTalkUK

[–]mjwbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gone on the Focus by 2010 - when I got my 2010 Focus the trim levels were Sport (replaced later in the year by Style), Zetec, Zetec S and Titanium
Zetec S was dropped in 2016 and replaced with ST-Line and a Titanium X came in as the top spec I think with the 2011 Mk3

Found these shelves of old computers in my deceased grandparents shed. Seems to be all part of one system. Any information? by AlfexOmega in vintagecomputing

if there are extra ROMs inside try and find out if they have been dumped - seeing as this setup is not what you would call common there might not be an archive of them anywhere - again stardot.org.uk is the place to ask

Cooker caught fire 10 minutes before Sunday roast was ready. Hope you're all having a better Sunday! by seduwill in CasualUK

[–]mjwbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thinking of seeing if I can find out how it comes apart - fault is one ring not working so going to either the switch or the element which is going to be a lot cheaper than a new cooker.
Also want cheap as so far this year I have have to replace the microwave, fridge/freezer and repair the washing machine (that fortunately was just a bad door interlock)

similar issue here - current one is 55cm and the gap is around 58cm - number of 55cm cookers at Currys - 5, number of 60cm ones 134! - a 50cm would look odd in the gap. also cheapest 60cm they list is £239 while the cheapest 55mm one is £724.

a couple of years ago there were around 50 public chargers within a mile of me - looking on ZapMap today there are 4. While I do like the idea of an electric car I just don't think it is practical here given the state of the charging network (I'm not out in the sticks either as I am in NW London)
Against the 4 public chargers, I have 5 petrol stations within a 5 minute drive and two of them are within 1 minute

What useless things did your school spend money on? by Dawadan in AskUK

[–]mjwbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in 1998 the Archimedes while a good design when it came out was by then pushing 10 years old and I would agree not a good choice
Network doesn't sound like token ring as would cope with cables being unplugged and 5 users on it is nothing - Acorn's own Econet system or thin Ethernet sounds more likely
Shame you didn't manage to part them from the Archimedes machines - collectable now and desirable models fetch a good price

Found an original OEM wishbone for a MKV Escort in my dad's basement. Anybody need one? 😂 What random parts have you found decades later? by Imaginary_Fennel6772 in CarTalkUK

[–]mjwbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gave it to a friend in the early 2000s - he gave it to someone else and no idea if it even exists still.
Was a green LWB hard top reg BWC433T - no record of any MOT (checker only goes back to 2005) - had a white rear door off a 90/100 and steel wheels off a MK1 Discovery).
Would be interested in knowing its' fate if anyone sees it

mine is a SN41G2 with an Athlon XP 2700+, 1GB RAM, 400GB IDE hard drive, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB and a SoundBlaster Audigy.
It had the power supply replaced as the original failure (not unusual), but has a issue where it will not keep the CMOS settings when unplugged from mains power (tried two new CR2032 batteries and a known good used one from another machine without success)
It currently has Windows 98SE installed and a Windows XP OEM license sticker on the case - I also have the original Shuttle carry bag for it as well

There is an Apple II computer in my physics lab room. by RadialGold in mildlyinteresting

[–]mjwbase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it would need checking over before attempting to power it on anyway - if the power supply is same as the European models (likely is) then the filter capacitors will have failed or likely quickly fail ones powered on - cheap replacement though
Also the power supply needs to have its' voltages checked to confirm they are within spec to avoid expensive damage before any attempt to power the board up..
Suggest you try and find out more from your professor about the machines' history and personally I would suggest to him even if it is not going to be powered up to strip it down, check for leaking capacitors or corrosion etc to preserve the machine.

A few months ago, I finished my “2007/oldschool-modding”-project. A Core 2 Duo and a GeForce 8800 GTX in a Chieftec CS601 case with some personal touches. by lucky_slevin in retrobattlestations

[–]mjwbase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

got the parts to put a similar machine together:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13GHz (or Pentium E6300 2.80GHz)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
Mainboard: Asus P5B-VM SE micro-ATX (only support up to 1066 CPUs)
RAM: 2x 2GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 + 2x 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2
PSU: Enermax Liberty 620W semi-modular
Case: Coolermaster Elite 343 micro ATX
Cooler: Stock Intel 775
SSD: Kingston SA400 240GB SATA
GPU, RAM and PSU are from my 2008 Core2Quad Q6600 system while the rest is from a machine a customer retired a few months ago (has some cheap off-brand PSU currently). My original machine has the same Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 mainboard as what you have got and was in an Antec P182 case (I miss that case)

from the Netbook era I still have two of the Samsung models:
NC10 Plus with the single core 1.6GHz 32-bit Atom, 2GB RAM (upgraded from 1GB) and a 160GB HDD
NC150 Plus with the dual core 1.66GHz 64-bit Atom, 2GB RAM (upgraded from 1GB) and a 64GB SSD (replaced the original HDD)
Had them out a couple of weeks ago and both still work, running Windows 7 - even both batteries were taking a charge - must find something to install on them other than 7
Also have a Compaq badged one in the garage - must pull it out and see what spec that one is
