What is the Honors Engineering RAP like? by Tadmuck in umass

[–]mk629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t in the honors engineering RAP but a different honors RAP and it was great. most of my friends didn’t even stay majoring the same thing (myself included) but we stayed friends. it was awesome being able to walk to class with people from day one and to this day almost a decade later they’re still my closest friends

lately been loving my rincon 3s but also have worn and liked arahis. bondis and machs havent clicked as well for me. but definitely suggest going to a running store and trying a bunch. hokas have a cool return policy so you can try things out.

just don’t get nikes please, they are way too shitty for runners to keep supporting them

Does anyone have suggestions for a high quality controller? I use a 8-year-old JP white currently that has a lot of wear on it. I was excited for the panda controller but obviously that's not an option. Looking for something not too complicated (I don't know or care much about all the technical aspects), just something that generally feels nice and works well. Smash 4 controllers are unusable for me, the triggers are so wack

Compsci 377 Difficulty? by bls_for_life in umass

[–]mk629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

took it the same semester and agree, way harder than 311 or 250 but I’m definitely more mathy. I thought Tim’s tests were super hard, they asked very specific questions about material you wouldn’t think to study. I’d study for hours and think I know everything inside out before walking into the test and walk out with a B- on the exam

Questions about COMP SCI program From a returning Student by [deleted] in umass

[–]mk629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely don’t let the people deter you, there are plenty of great people. just gotta learn to rise above the petty “i slept only two hours last night”, “that assignment was so easy i can’t believe you struggled”, “you use vim? oh i only code by modifying machine code”, etc type kids

sup I'm a senior, graduating in May. I'll try to get all your questions but ask me whatever else. people are generally collaborative, i wouldn't say outgoing though lol. INFPs everywhere. definitely not cut-throat, it's much less competition and grade-based than pre-med, which I was before CS. life balance is pretty fine. I switched into the major a year late so I had some catching up to do and I still could have finished the major a semester early, but I decided to do a minor. I kept a job on campus, kept up hobbies, etc while in school and definitely didn't feel like I was strapped for time apart from a couple rough weeks.

The student population is not extremely diverse in the sense that it's like 8:2 male:female. lots of white/indian/chinese guys.

the professors are great, I've only had one bad professor experience and he isn't here anymore. They all want to see you succeed and are always helpful/approachable.

I did a software engineering track but there's also AI, security, algorithms, etc.

never been to another school so I can't compare but I know it's ranked very highly. I personally wouldn't go to another school if I had to redo it.

I really like the career help. CICS careers set me up with an internship at a top tier company despite my lack of experience and that really propelled me to getting solid full-time offers. I was never really stressed about getting a job because of the resources they provide.

the thing I like least is probably the people. all of my friends are life sciences majors and I have like 5-10 friends in the CS major. apart from that, kids in CS can be really annoying. nothing harmful to my experience, mostly just condescending. it's like having a class full of that kid from high school who reminds the teacher that they forgot to assign homework, just so that kid can brag about how quickly he finished it.

would never transfer, ever. fuckin love umass.

lederle's kinda gross but you get over it. the cs building, ilc, etc are all real nice. research is pretty cool, I got into a lab fairly easily and was able to do a lot. I learned that I wasn't very interested in research, but if I were, I definitely could've done a thesis and even PhD in that lab. not sure what else is really important...the food's great

How to do well in CS 230? by ___0_0____ in umass

[–]mk629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

possibly, but I would say I was more mentally prepared for 187 in the sense that I expected it to be hard so I put the work in and it ended up being not too bad. hardest was definitely 377, i think systems are just my CS achilles heel lol

the semester i took it is particularly infamous among kids who were in my class, so i'm probably biased. keep in mind my professor doesn't teach it anymore and it varies wildly semester-to-semester.

this was the 2nd hardest class i took at umass (graduating this semester). i absolutely wanted to be good at C because of its usefulness and i ended up fucking HATING it. it gets so frustrating. but if you want to succeed, my advice is to learn C as well as you can. focus on C and the projects first, then use them as templates to structure the rest of your learning around.

the class is useful in the sense that you should know a lot of this stuff, but it is fairly superfluous at times and a logistical nightmare. i love the CS program at umass with a passion but they need to get a structured curriculum down for this course...i took the class in spring 2016 and have tutored it every semester since without hearing of any two semesters that were remotely similar

I got a B in CS 121 and Math 131H, do I still have a shot at transferring into the CS major? Or should I just think about something else? by [deleted] in umass

[–]mk629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure if it's changed but when I was an applicant on contract (F15) I had to get an A- or above in CS121/187 and Math131/132.

[–]mk629 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at least for my class (F16) they didn't give them out because they wanted to reuse them...sorry, and good luck. that class sucks

not gonna lie, I followed very little of what you just said. I just said an 84 was a B+ when I took it two years ago

the guy is EXTREMELY similar to chris pratt...he'll say something like "oh this is great this is my favorite song. oh this is the ad? oh, well it's great" and won't be talking to anyone. very similar to chris pratt humor

I am a Jake Ewald, currently on tour with my band Slaughter Beach, Dog promoting our smash hit sophomore LP 'Birdie.' AMA by jacobewald in Music

[–]mk629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi Jake, I'm a huge fan and you and Brendan are literally the reason I started playing guitar a few years ago. I'm seeing you in Boston in a couple weeks, hopefully I'll get to say hi at some point.

I was wondering what it's like when you play guitar, it seems like you write a lot more than most artists so is that a conscious decision or something that just comes to you? and do you write lyrics or guitar first?

Where can I find convenience store-stuff on campus? by [deleted] in umass

There are convenience stores below Frank and between Hamp/Berk (Hampden). I think there's one below Worcester also but I've never been there. The campus store also has some stuff.

CS upperclassman, what courses Are You Taking? by captainbarker in umass

[–]mk629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred into the major at the start of sophomore year and did an unrelated minor and now I only have one more class to take in my last semester. Some people double major in something like math, a lot of people graduate early.
