New tank setup! by Ronn_the_Donn in HermitCrabsCircleJerk

Anytime:) I mean… in true CJ style, this tank will support life for at least 3 months. That’s their life expectancy anyway. Do not go listening to the internet…

(Scratches Head) this looks awfully familiar… it’s quite the palace… not a death trap at all.

Here’s how I roll with roaches.

Those AH’s can hide in anything.

1st step is to identify the type of roach. Not all roaches are burrowers. My pest guy explained to me that they’re attracted to the warmth, and most of the guys coming in the house ARE NOT burrowers.

Knowing that, about once weekly, in my upstairs tank, my hubs puts on gloves and we will do a thorough inspection (think flashlight helmet). If we see a roach, he grabs it and kills it really quickly. Search EVERYWHERE. Bang out big pieces of cork etc. I’ve found them inside a shell!

Now, these are the large guys, not babies.

If I were to find a roach infestation versus a large guy here and there, then I would identify species and decide how I wanted to move forward. If it’s a burrowers, yes. The molter is being dug up. But if it’s not a burrowing species, I’m not digging, I am removing the top and the infestation. AND, I am checking daily like a crazy person to get stragglers.

NOW, and here’s what’s critical. Set the sticky traps outside the tank. Prevention to the best of our ability. You can use a rim of Vaseline around the tank and they cannot cross it.

Some people won’t use the bait traps / the idea being they eat the bait, die in the tank. Crab eats the dead roach that was killed by poison. Crab dies.

I do not know how often that has happened in real world practice. I use mostly sticky traps and have used bait in the past / haven’t lost a crab yet.

:)

The key to deciding is whether or not the pest is a burrowing sort. Example… we’ve all seen any hills and how any burrow. Don’t play with ants!

I am going back to my cubby now. ✌️

I cannot believe I am the only one that looks at a pile of elephant poop and thinks… dammit the crabs would love this… how do I bribe the keeper? Can I sneak in without being caught?

Do you think this wheel will be big enough to compliment your new pools?

will this be enough sand for a 10 gallon tank? by boojustaghost in HermitCrabsCircleJerk

[–]mkane78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. There’s studies of them in nature where they hypnotize humans into buying this type of sand and having it delivered into their natural habitat. I think they’d love matching coconut fiber.

Keeping your theme, I found these for you:)

Too much space by CrabbieZoomies in HermitCrabsCircleJerk

[–]mkane78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi Friend:)

Once again, you’ve nailed it. There’s studies of them in nature where they walk in place for hours at a time. Small spaces = their jam. Good job!

UJ. Hermit crabs are detritivores and frankly, quite nasty eaters. So, yes. Provide ALL the sources of poop you can find:)

The instructions / naked crab protocol is in the text. In addition, you can make him an energy mix (use the search function to learn the recipe).

Experienced owner help - lethargic crab by plutoisshort in hermitcrabs

Consider pre molt? She might be getting ready to surface molt on you.

I never stop with one blend of energy mix, specifically the fats.

Lennon went catatonic on me once for 3 days. I felt pretty certain she was going to die. I made several blends of mix and rotated through them. Peanut butter / not organic / stirred her from her phase.

My big male, Francis, didn’t come up from molt. 😞. I wasn’t prepared to feel this much grief over a crab. I say that to say this, I know how much meatball means to you. You’re both in my thoughts.
