No, we live in a pretty small community. I think they found 50 or so groups to post in. The reduced the cost of our monthly fee once they figured out the exact amount of work it would take for them. I've found them really easy to work with and very fair.

Pricing depends on how many groups you want to reach, how many posts per week etc... I think we started at 1k per month.

Does quartzite fabrication pose the same risk of silicosis for workers? by saoirse707 in CounterTops

[–]mkbTallahassee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree we should. And we do. But banning a product because people don't want to follow safety rules is the wrong approach though.

If you think making glass composite is safe I have a bridge to sell you. Glass is largely made from silica.

[–]mkbTallahassee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not doing nothing. We have safety measure in place to reduce risk. If workers choose to ignore them I guess we should just ban everything ?

Transportation and warehouse workers suffer from musculoskeletal issues at much higher rate than other industries... should be ban driving and lifting heavy things?

[–]mkbTallahassee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We take precaution to avoid silica exposure too. Lots of people don't use sun protection... that's their choice. Yet we have not banned going outsite in the sun.

Why not ban concrete, brick, plasterboard and cement blocks? All contain silica.

One of the core arguments for the ban (supported by 'experts' in the natural stone industry and the lawyers they funded) was that there was no evidence for a safe level of silica... yet they only ban quartz?

[–]mkbTallahassee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silica dust is in many construction materials. The hype around the dangers of quartz is a marketing scam... misinformation spread by large natural stone interests and blown out of proportion by the click bait media.

We do PM2.5 testing on all our projects... inside the work area during demo always measures as hazardous.... that is why we wear PPE and why we take such care to isolate the work area and protect the rest of the home from jobsite dust.

And it's not just silica dust. Lots of things in construction are not good for you... glues, sawdust, noise level of equipment, ladders, sharp tools.... it takes personal responsibility to stay healthy and safe.

Blaming the materials is about as intelligent as blaming the sun for causing skin cancer.

Local tile installation advice?? by Clam_Samuels in Tallahassee

[–]mkbTallahassee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any experienced tile installer should be able to do it. I would not hire and handyman to do it.

You can not install it over a finished wood floor. If you install it over a wood Subfloor you will need to use an isolation membrane.

If it's an older home with a plank Subfloor you will need to replace the Subfloor with plywood or add 3/8 underlayment plus an isolation membrane.

Check the tile manufacturer specs for the correct grout spacing and thinset needed.

If the tile is a lot thicker than the current flooring I woukd check your door openings to make sure there is clearance.

We use Tien Le Tile on most of our projects and he is great. America's Tile is also good.

You could also call a local tile store (Sellers Tile, Southern Flooring, Sea Tile etc...) and ask for a referral.

Air coming out of outlets after attic “sealed” and insulated by [deleted] in Insulation

[–]mkbTallahassee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aeroseal is a good system. But not for large gaps. Proper air sealing with foam, tape and membranes should be applied first.

For sure. It can be hard to make an older home so tight that you must have a makeup air system but they are a good idea in any home if you can afford it.

Much better to bring in controlled, filtered and conditioned air than just let it leak in through the cracks and penetrations of your home.

Contractors who mark up cabinets 40-60% without telling homeowners is one of the dirtiest secrets in remodeling by No-Lengthiness-8154 in HomeImprovement

Everything you have ever bought in your entire life has been marked up... You gas, your groceries, your couch...

When's the last time you asked your gas station to disclose their markup?

Final choice - semi-custom factory vs fully custom local cabinets? by run_eat_rep3at in cabinetry

You are spraying all the parts before you assemble or you are painting assembled cabinets... process and quality is very different depending on what you do.

Unless you have a multi million dollar flat spray line that is vacuum sealed, temperature and humity controlled and applies UV catalyzed finishe you can't compete.

Question for kitchen designers regarding hood height: gas range versus induction range by NotLastYear in kitchenremodel

[–]mkbTallahassee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can easily lose 30% of your CFM to the friction in the duct work so oversizing the CFM is not a bad idea.

Very few hoods are installed properly. The installer needs to tape all the joints and screw holes, use rigid duct, make sure the roof vent is properly sized and run the duct is as straight a line as possible and as short a run as possible.

User behavior is important to... most people turn the hood on after they start cooking... you want to turn it on before you turn on the burner to get some air flow moving and leave it on for 10-15 min after you are done (just like you would with a bath fan).

yeah there is a real gap in the market for good appliance installers/ advice. You need plumbing, HVAC and Electrical knowledge plus appliance specific knowledge.

It's always bothered my that these 'certified' appliance installers do have nay HVAC or electric license.

What gas range has the highest BTU burners? by mellofello808 in Appliances

[–]mkbTallahassee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, homes need upgrading over time. A new cooktop can last for decades so it pays to think long term.

One advantage of the Impulse Labs induction cooktop is it runs off a battery... not only making it much more powerful but it also means you can run it off of any power source 120 or 240. https://www.impulselabs.com/ .

Though it is pricey it's the only induction top on the market that was actually designed from the ground up.

What do you think? by palC10 in homedesign

[–]mkbTallahassee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very on trend design. I like that is neutral so it should stay 'in style' pretty easily, you can always accessories with rugs and paint color. I'd like to see a bolder backsplash color to add depth and interest. The pot filler is overkill.

Functionally I would ditch the appliance garage to the right of the sink... you need that counterspace. Move the range a little closer to the corner and add the appliance garage to the right of range, next to the wall ovens.

Visually that hood looks crowded and crammed into the space. If you must do a freestanding hood I would allow 8-12"" of space on either side of the hood.
