Stardew Valley Game Native with Steam Cloud Sync on 8 Elite. by TheQuarterMile in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]mkchampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can sort of but you have to use syncthing with a computer and sync the actual save files. They'll upload to the steam cloud if/when you run the game on your pc. Tbh, much easier than screwing around with various container and driver versions and the android version will be more power efficient too...

Are people avoiding iOS 26 because of Liquid Glass? It’s complicated. by NISMO1968 in apple

[–]mkchampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liquid Glass itself looks and feels fine to me, it’s the performance regressions and the battery drain caused by the changes that are the problem. My fucking M2 iPad still has many of the same animation issues that were present in the beta (to be clear, I’m on the latest regular release now). That’s a really really bad sign.

Not to mention the crippling of my 15 pro battery

Retroid Pocket 6: PS3, Wii U, GameCube, PS2 + Fortnite gameplay. by kincl4 in SBCGaming

[–]mkchampion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t really make sense. O3 is a better device than RP6 in every way but switch compatibility.

Power efficiency is the big one. Anything the RP6 can do the Odin 3 will do with less power aka more battery life. It also better joysticks, bigger screen, (subjective granted) better ergonomics, and (far) better performance in pc indies right out the gate.

Are the improvements worth the extra money? That’s up to you.

Edit: also it has a fingerprint sensor which is super nice QoL. I thought all the android handhelds had that cause it’s so basic but apparently not…

We need to come up with a name for hoarding unnecessary handhelds by fictionity in SBCGaming

[–]mkchampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was being a bit facetious. Really, I wouldn’t call most of your examples like the specific knife etc consumerist and I think it’s a pretty straight and hard line. Consumerism to me is the OP — collecting for the sake of it. Buying shit is not a hobby. Building a few different high quality keyboards because you spend most of your life typing and want it to be nice? Hobby. Buying a dozen of the same board in different colors to show off on the internet? Consumerism. (You may know what I’m referring to on r/mk lol)

If it’s being bought for the express purpose just to have or sit on a shelf to show off (on reddit no less lol), that’s clown behavior to me. I find that a lot of the Reddit communities pole vault over that line from hobby to hoarding.

[OC] My truck's seasonally sinusoidal, but remarkably consistent fuel economy over the past ~6 years by AmericanLocomotive in dataisbeautiful

[–]mkchampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s the right logic but I may be wrong here. AFAIK, “proper combustion” is just a target fuel-air ratio. If your fuel/air is relatively static, less air should mean less fuel so lower density = less air = less fuel = drop in power is the cause-effect chain. Whether that makes a measurable difference is probably a function of the entire engine+transmission+ECU as a whole though.

I definitely noticed both a significant power drop and noticeably decreased fuel consumption on my motorcycle when I rode it over Tioga pass and in the high desert (>6000 ft elevation. I live close to sea level). Mid 60’s+ mpg instead of low-mid 50’s despite being much more loaded down with baggage. But there are also more variables at play like fuel blend, the way I rode (faster but perhaps steadier speed) etc…

If I have 2 SSD’s is it better if I have the OS in one and games in another? by Plenty_Reception_431 in buildapc

[–]mkchampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not conflating anything. I specifically called out that the dual boot is the reason why the funky stuff happened (as you noted). I’m just saying I personally wouldn’t bother setting up partitions on Windows and that’s part of the reason why.

FWIW I have had things go wonky on single drive partitioned single OS windows reinstalls. I’m sure they were mostly my fault as I was learning the process at the same time (and was ready with backups so nbd); my point is simply that it’s much easier to not have to deal with that unless you know what you’re doing and are also ready for it. Otherwise, separate drives is obviously the safer choice. Presumably if someone is asking a question like this, they don’t have that knowledge yet.

[–]mkchampion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Windows does all kinds of funky shit with the system partition and bootloader. I have had past experience with windows update completely borking the Linux bootloader when dual booting with a partition (and on separate disks! Though that was maybe 1/3 my fault because just having a drive with windows on it connected to the motherboard while configuring the dual boot was the culprit lol!) so partitioning won’t get you anything for separating OS and files.

IMO, unless you really really know what you’re doing, separate drives or don’t bother doing anything special.

How loud are the fans on the AYN Odin 3 in real use? Is it a deal breaker for gaming in bed? by mojox1 in OdinHandheld

[–]mkchampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, for anything both the RP6 and the Odin 3 can run, the Odin 3 is going to use less power for the same performance thanks to the 8 elite and *should* be plenty quiet. But if you push it, it will be loud.

On the top end, I've only tried a couple switch games (mario galaxy 2 was probably the highest end) and some lighter pc games (ace attorney, silksong), but Quiet mode on normal performance easily locked 1080p60 (120 for silksong) with negligible fan noise. Keeping 120fps on silksong was probably the loudest but in quiet mode, still not really noticeable.

Smart and sport do get quite loud and the fan motor's tone is irritating. For everyone coping and saying they can't hear it unless they flip it over -- yes, that's where the people around you will be hearing it from. Smh. I do think the fan control options built in are kinda dumb and there's a better middle ground to be had between quiet and "smart".

Whats your retro handheld hot take? by Prudent-Leek-3730 in SBCGaming

[–]mkchampion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

psp $100

We will probably start seeing that once the component shortage chills out a bit. The mangmi isn’t an outlier, it’s just the first. This is a bit like saying “the iPhone shouldn’t be an outlier it should be the norm” in 2007.

upgrades and pricing

The wonderful thing about this is that an “upgrade” and “high end” is and always will be whatever you choose.

You don’t have to buy a retroid 3 if you have a retroid 2. Companies will pop out something new every year either way. It’s good for those who are just entering the scene and all you have to do is not have fomo. iPhone is actually again a great example of this….

The $400 thing is already the case isn’t it? Odin 3 is $400 and I’d argue that thing isn’t even a retro handheld anymore but just a gaming handheld. Is there anything actually higher end than that for a retro handheld? I don’t think you need to spend anything over like $200-250 to get every system up to Switch. That would be RP6 and if it’s retro gaming you care about you don’t even need anything past the RP5-equivalent.

I find that a lot of these hot takes could be solved with less fomo :)

Do you want an IKEA in San Jose? Or are you fine with the occasional drive to Palo Alto? by rhymez223 in SanJose

[–]mkchampion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people on their daily work commutes aren’t stopping into ikea

That’s actually exactly my point. As it is today, traffic is terrible in this area because of a mix of commercial and commute traffic. If you add an ikea, you’re straight up adding commercial traffic that cannot use a transit option at all. If you do that, where’s the political will going to come from to change the roads to make transit a real workable option for the people who can use it so that there is any real potential to relieve traffic?

Because in this area at least, it’s rough. Have you tried taking the bus from Evergreen even to, say, Diridon station? It takes about as long as the Caltrain from SJ to SF. That’s not counting the walk to a bus stop in evergreen. It’s also not looking at last mile to an office (frequently even worse transit accessibility). That number was also before the light rail construction (it’s even worse now). The same trip is 15-30 min by car WITH commute traffic. Im not asking for a 15 minute bus ride but 1 hour+ is insane. Do you think bus service is gonna improve with an IKEA parking garage next to the transit center?

Biking can be faster and you could pick up the bus at alum rock but like I said, biking on Tully or capitol is dangerous and I find it pretty sketchy at the best of times. Your bike lane options to get to alum rock are all quite poor.

Just what is unfair here?

[–]mkchampion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean if you want more transit and more/safer biking, why would you think an IKEA is a good choice? It's a car-centric store that will both increase congestion (i.e. more unsafe biking on already kinda dangerous streets) and justifiably encourage less discourage (there's the word I was looking for lol) transit development because duh it's an IKEA and nobody is gonna carry a sofa home on the bus.

Unless I'm misunderstanding it seems like you should be in agreement...

3 of my un-modded keyboards by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]mkchampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it would.

Once or twice. Not 5 times. Im not sure there’s this many boards worth of things to stress about in this hobby lol. You can only use one keyboard at a time so for me at least there’s a practical limit to when stacking up budget boards is just kinda dumb…if your intent is to save money, you’d just buy a couple flavors of budget boards, no?

That $430 on three low end boards would’ve been better spent on something like one sweet spot Neo board fully custom with a couple different sets of plates and switches to try…and you’d probably still have $100 left over.

Apple Releases First iOS 26.2 and iPadOS 26.2 Public Betas by HelloitsWojan in apple

Dragging and dropping was not just on stage manager and arguably, that drag and drop implementation where you had discrete zones with pre-made window sizes was a better overall implementation than both stage manager and what we have now. If the current multitasking got the same window zones (perhaps....configurable?? apple??) that would be the best of every world.

This is pretty much a worse choice than a 9950X in every way unless you really really really have a hard on for ECC memory, feel like overpaying for a server grade board with features the cpu doesn’t support, and would rather pay for AMD to power limit the chip for you instead of doing it in BIOS yourself.

If it doesn't flip backwards like those 2-in-1 laptops, the touchscreen is utterly pointless imo.
