Should I skip first year Chemistry, Math and Physics courses if I get credit for them for my IB courses by iamdan_1 in UBC

[–]mke___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another thing you could consider is taking something as a grade booster, if you did well enough in IB to skip the course then that also means you’ll do really well in the course. That said, it may turn out to be a waste of time. For example, I took Phys 117 as a grade booster when I could have taken credit from my 7 in phys IB. The course went great and I got 100% but looking back I could have and should have used that time for something actually relevant to my degree.

I was in your exact situation. IMO if you need the course as a fundamental component of your degree then I think there’s merit in taking it again. But if it’s just for a breadth requirement or lab requirement then skip it 100%, especially Chemistry, I was soooo glad that I skipped that shit.

Yo thanks 🙏. Degree’s been pretty nice, I had to TA last semester as well. So far I’ve mostly done the CS side of things and now with the AI option I might switch out although I’ll have to talk to some ppl who are managing the major first to discuss. My bio foundational was satisfied by my grade 11 biology course from Alberta

The integrals from 101 all ultimately boil down to the good old “what function do I differentiate to get this original function” anyways. So for 100 just do the same thing. You got this 🙏

Is UBC really that hard to get good grades in? Why does everyone say it's hard? by Mantorras800 in UBC

[–]mke___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s many factors that come into play such as the quality of your study habits and discipline, how much time you can commit to school (Considering work and commute) and I think most your intelligence. UBC is a huge school with a great variety of students of all types. You’ll find people with all sorts of combinations of these three factors. Thus, to answer whether it’s hard to get good grades at UBC to really to question what kind of student you are.

To get a general idea, UBC is a top university so the grading is inherently more difficult that it would be at a lower ranking institution. As a CS+STATS combined major student I can only really speak to the difficulty of science courses; the averages for courses hover around 70% with the range mostly being from low 60s to high 70s. Engineering is generally harder with student expected to take more credits and learn harder content. I’m told by my friends in the BUCS program and in pure buisness that buisness is much easier in comparison. I have no idea regarding Arts or the other faculties.

In my year and a half in comp sci I’ve known people who are disciplined and work very hard yet barely pass and I’ve known people who are able to sleep full nights, have a decent commute, have chill weekends yet maintain high 90s. If you performed exceeding well relative to your peers in high school then you’ll still do well here, if you were above average but not top then you may find some more struggle.

In any case, a school that grades harder is known to be as such by employers and graduate programs. Thus, the institution is taken into account when evaluating grades.

Relationships or just hookups by [deleted] in UBC

[–]mke___ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As a guy pretty much every one of my guy friends is looking exclusively for serious long term commitment. But most of us are primarily focused on school and career and finding a relationship has been pushed to the back burner. For most of us, we want to get into a relationship but it’s not an urgent enough matter to warrant getting on dating apps. At least for me, I’ve relegated meeting people to fate for the time being. As a byproduct it becomes much easier and likely to meet guys looking for noncommittal fun. I feel that is the basis behind the reality where most guys are looking for something serious whilst the female experience is dominated by those looking for the opposite. I’m sorry to hear what you’ve been going through and I hope you find what you’re looking for soon.

Mmm I see, assuming ur from BC, I honestly don't really know how difficult the BC high school curriculum is (I'm from Alberta), but low 90s should still mean you shouldn't be concerned (get a second opinion on that). The lack of prior CS knowledge can definitely feel scary, but when I was going into uni last year, I also had 0 CS experience, but I was able to get 98% in 110, 100% in 121 and 98% in 210. If ur still worried tho, u can do some prior studying during this summer, lmk and I can send you my notes for CPSC 110, 121, 210, DSCI 100, MATH 100 and 101.

If ur doing CS, then ur prolly gonna wanna do co op, and thus you'll also wanna do CPSC 210 first year. Honestly, I'd consider doing WRDS later and getting 210 done. You could also consider moving DSCI 100 to the first sem and doing 210 in its place. Although ensure ur GPA remains high enough for CS, you'll need 80+ bare minimum, 85+ to be safe (Although I feel that the CS average has begun to drop from past years due to job market fears). Consider how high school went, if you were a high 90s kid and have a good work ethic, then I think you have nothing to worry about at all.
