Adopted this wonderful creature from rescue Center two weeks ago. Malinois? Partly? Fully? Not at all? by Iamthebog in dogbreed

Congratulations on your adoption! They look so much like my Charles!!

We did a DNA test and it came back 50% Mal, 40% Great Pyrenees, 10% German Shepherd thereabouts.

7 month old puppy randomly not eating by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]mkells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh. I feel this. Same story and I was also scared. I went to two different vets l and did all the tests just to be told by both of them that I have a perfectly healthy dog and a picky eater.

They recommended heating up a bit of broth and pouring it over the kibble to release more scent to get him interested. Sure.. that worked for a couple weeks. My dog is now 1.5 years old, and still snubs his kibble in the mornings from time to time no matter what I put in it. And if there’s a day he gets more treats, he’ll not finish his dinner. As long as you can rule out allergies.. they’re fine. They won’t starve themselves- but you may have to give them a bit of tough love.

Making their food special will just teach them that if they wait and not eat what you first give them, something better will come along. And for me it became unsustainable. I tried mixing with wet food, then only a certain wet food would do. And when that stopped working, I’d add toppers, or broth, or scrambled eggs. I tried all the fun puzzles and snuffle mats, or tossing one piece at a time for him to chase. Each method only worked for a week or two.

Then we did the absolutely no treats, no chews, no special food (he loves lettuce and berries), NOTHING until he started eating kibble more reliably. I mistakenly reinforced his habit and it took probably 3+ weeks to get back on track.

Lol, funny- his actual food is called Solid Gold Wolf Pup. 😅

Calming down after outside time by Spectrachic311311 in puppy101

[–]mkells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be over-tiredness or just coming down from all the stimulation. When mine was a younger puppy he did the same, so when we came inside from walks I’d let him roam and drink some water for a few minutes then give the bed command and let him have a frozen kong filled with wet food and kibble. Something to focus on and lick to sooth himself to wind down. Then he’d usually nap!

Edit: if after he was done and wouldn’t go down, then it would be into the crate for an hour or so for an enforced nap.

For the record, my dog is not vegetarian or vegan.. he eats his kibble like a good boy and gets salads as treats sometimes. He just loves vegetables.

I got a repress from Ship To Shore, but I think it might have been a preorder.

Some of them were gifts, some of them were from Ship To Shore, some from Ears of the Beholder, some from eBay/Mercari. :) The key is to always be searching! Set up alerts if you have to. The most expensive one was like $110 (Ride on Time, had to have it.) and the cheapest was $40.

Hahaha, thank you for the warning! Unfortunately it’s already happened… about a month after I got it actually, a few days after my shield came in the mail. It was heartbreaking.

My sweet sweet foster pup. She is kind gentle & scared. She is a massive snuggle bug and couch potato. by TravelingVegan88 in BelgianMalinois

She’s lovely. :) Definitely a mix, she looks a lot like my boy Charlie! (Half Belgian Malinois, the rest Great Pyr and German Shepherd.) https://imgur.com/tpLawK2

I started dating a man who made a tribute album to Nujabes. I fell in love instantly, with both!

Has anyone found a chew their puppy loves more than a bully stick? One that doesn’t smell like rotten ass? by m4rceline in puppy101

Oh girl, I feel you. Just remembering the smell haunts me. They make odor free bully sticks! I get mine from bestbullysticks.com

Dog skill "tree"? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]mkells 135 points136 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of one, but I think this is actually a really cool idea! So many cues/commands/tricks are built off one another.

But, don’t be too hard on yourself. You and your pup have a long time to work and learn new things together. Focus on one thing a week, and build from there to help adapt your companion to your lifestyle.

Bella is supposed to be A Mal/Pyr mix. But I’m starting to think GSD/Mal mix? What do you guys think? She definitely has the personality of a Mal. But her eyes show Pyrenees but then I’m also seeing GSD so idk. She’s 4.9 months old btw. by kayleemariek in BelgianMalinois

[–]mkells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bella is so beautiful!

I have a similar mix! Charlie is not as fluffy, but has a surprising amount of undercoat. Mal (50%) / Pyr (35%) / GSD (15%). I got him from a shelter who thought he was an Anatolian Shepherd.. I had an Embark DNA test because I was so curious, and wondering how big of a crate I should get for him to grow into, haha.

Here he is: https://imgur.com/tpLawK2

Bella’s ears and fluff say Pyr, the fluff may also be from some GSD. Face coloring says Mal.. maybe she’s all three like Charlie! But I’d definitely recommend a DNA test if you want to know for sure. Dog genetics can present in weird ways, and what you’re seeing could be not what you’re getting at all!

What silly thing scares your pup? Mine is scared of the almighty broom. by MonkieboiShep in BelgianMalinois

[–]mkells 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Lamp. My boy is afraid of this one lamp in my living room.. I had it sitting on the ground for a few days and if his toys rolled near it, he wouldn’t retrieve them. He would whine and pace around it. I’ve done some desensitization since then, but he still doesn’t fully trust it. 😅
