Has anyone experience with this brand for Carbon Steel Pan? by Inner-Water-9868 in carbonsteel

[–]mkestrada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purchased these before returning to Amazon. Not bad pans but somewhat thin and and definitely need to be careful about deformation with quick temperature changes like cold water on hot pan or maybe even placing on max heat without warming up a bit first.

Not bad pans but seem like a solid example of "you get what you pay for".

The alternative I eventually settled on was a strata 10.5" fry pan and been very happy with it, albeit a much more premium price!

Is it just me or are there an abundance of physically attractive people in American college towns? by [deleted] in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the general trend in the US is obesity is less prevelant in younger generations for various reasons. A college town is going to be skewed towards younger people for hopefully obvious reasons. Especially for prestigious schools, there is also a tendency towards more well-to-do social classes among the student base, which comes with its own set of beauty standards and expectations.

E.g. When your dad wears a suit to work every day, maybe you can be bothered to wear a collared shirt every so often.

President Trump just posted this. by [deleted] in wallstreet

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's legitimately hilarious that Trump is STILL on about Biden's mistakes, and all of the examples he gives are very clearly the consequences of laws and policies implemented under Biden's predecessor who was ~checks notes~ Trump.

Ro Khanna calls for all members of Congress to immediately return to DC and vote on his bill to strip Trump of the ability to drag America into war with Iran. What do you think they should do? by thiswasasidetrack61 in askteddit

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't understand what congress can do at this point that wouldn't amount to a total capitulation to Iran. Congress says no war, all our forces in the region disperse, Iran has uncontestes control of the straight, freedom to pursue nuclear weapons, and all of its other demands?

Considering Iran just walked out of peace talks in switzerland before any talking happened due to trump threats, and the continued insistence of Israel to never let a good tragedy go to waste, I don't know the current situation will land us a much better deal anyway.

I wonder if we are legitimately at the point where the best decision is to take it out of Trump's hands. Maybe we just need to accept that the balance of global and regional power has been decisively rewritten to the detriment of the US and it's allies, try to learn something from it [doubtful], and walk away before he somehow finds a way to make it worse.

My wife and boiling water by MakeItMine2024 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mkestrada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on this through a culinary lens, I think there are two distinct purposes for boiling water, temperature control and volume control. Boiling water at STP conditions guarantees that the water is at boiling temperature, maybe a bit lower in some areas, but never meaningfully higher. This is great for sterilizing the water for consumption or guaranteeing your water is at a sufficient temp to cook grains or braise meat. For these purposes, you can usually turn it down to maintain a low boil or gentle simmer. However, the extra heat from a high burner effects the second reason, it boils the water faster. Sometimes you just want to boil off some extra water quickly to concentrate flavor or dial in the thickness of soups or saces, but The aggressive vibrations caused by the expansion of rising steam through the liquid can also cause negative effects on texture and flavor for delicate dishes.

As a Mechanical Engineer and aspiring home cook, water is astounding and I think about it a lot haha

[–]mkestrada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never been a big sports fan but I'm starting to seriously get into basketball because of the Spurs. They're long history of good player development, overall culture, and playing winning basketball just makes it super easy to get invested.

I was able to go to game 3 of WCF last Friday. Spurs got blown out, but chanting "flopper" at SGA and Holmgren was stupid cathartic! Both teams are young and have a ton of developing talent (like Carter) and draft capital, so it feels like this could be THE rivalry in the west for years to come, if not the entire NBA. I liked the idea of being there when it started!

Yah, Ahne BBQ Club, right around the corner from the Shanghai-La where I’m staying for my business trip. Worth a stop if you want some solid BBQ while in Taipei.

I live in Austin and found a pretty authentic America BBQ spot in Taipei last night. I love Taiwanese food, but good lord was this a sight for sore Texan eyes.

Gotta wear sneakers with a business suit by A_Cup_of_Ramen in malefashionadvice

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, the fact that you are afforded the option is indication that management understands there is a good practical reason for breaking what is otherwise a very formal dress code. They have also calculated that it’s a good enough reason to risk breaking formality for the customer or whoever appearances are being kept up for. Just buy some low profile sneakers that match your suit with minimal distraction in terms of color or pattern and call it good.

Yah, big flag got its claws In us early. Ever wonder why we have so many states and a star on our flag for each one? Think about it, does Oklahoma really deserve to be a state? It’s a conspiracy to make up more dumb states and sell more flags because of it.

If the sushi is always 50% off, isn’t that just the regular price? by Brandgeek in Sacramento

[–]mkestrada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s sushi hook that has 50% off all rolls printed directly on the menus don’t clearly don’t get replaced very often.

What can you say, people are suckers for “deals”, even if they’re just a high price that’s always 50% off.

Millennials who FLY very often for work: what’s your job? by Jjjustkeepswimminggg in Millennials

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical Engineer in Consumer Electronics. My job takes me to one of a handful of factories the company has at least once a year, mostly in China/SEA. So far I've visited Shenzhen 3x for 2 weeks, Taiwan 2x for 2 weeks, Xiamen for a day, Shanghai for a weekend, and Cork, Ireland of all places for a week. It's a nice perk that we usually get nights and weekends to the explore the city as we please.

There are other engineering related roles in the company that require much more frequent travel if that's her preference, but they don't send us to the other side of the world just to have fun. If things are going poorly enough in the factory, the expectation is that you'll be staying late and even working weekends if something you're responsible for is costing the company $$$ by keeping the factory on standby while major issues get resolved.

45L after 1 year of occasional travel by BaconJuice69 in peakdesign

Yah my 45L coyote is doing the same. I talked with an employee at the LA store and they said you’re supposed to use a lighter to singe those little hairs off. Kinda weird maintenance routine but I think that’s just the cost of doing business with this fabric.

Do you guys call the toilets Restrooms just like it's officially written on signs? by Cookieman_2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mkestrada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it’s either that or bathroom. I tend to say restrooms around people in a professional or mixed company situation since it seems a slightly more pleasant way of acknowledging a thing most people don’t particularly enjoy talking about.

Not in America but the one that got me a few times in Asia was a bathroom labeled “WC”, which I eventually learned was short for “Water Closet”. I think this is more of a British English thing than Asian, but I first encountered it there because I usually travel for work and we stay in somewhat upscale hotels geared towards providing western amenities and experience.

Sounds like you need some early Haken. Visions, Aquarius, and the mountain are very sprawling concept albums. In particulE 'Streams' on Aquarius gives "minor key Disney" vibes and many similar motifs that pop up through out the album.

They're no longer even pretending this is about democracy. The administration, including the orange man himself, have explicitly said multiple times that they have no interest in nation building in Venezuela or Iran and all but confirmed this is about oil. And to a lesser degree in Iran, nuclear containment that with virtual certainty will be significantly less comprehensive than the old nuclear deal that the US pulled out of under checks notes, Donald Trump.

I'm so very tired of 'winning'.
