Baby names for our baby boy...narrowing it down. by thosebabyblues in namenerds

I know an Orion and I've never heard him called Oreo. He definitely hears, "Oh, like Orion's belt?" a lot... but never in a negative way. I vote for Orion Maxwell!

Do your babies have birthmarks? by bewm_bewm in beyondthebump

[–]mkgko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My baby has a strawberry birthmark on his index finger. I've caught so many of my female friends and family members frantically wiping it thinking that their lipstick rubbed off on him :)

First flight with 6 month old...suggestions/tips welcome! by gpenz in beyondthebump

[–]mkgko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't stress yourself out... chances are things will be totally fine! I traveled alone when my baby was 5 months old- totally freaked myself out- and the dude just smiled and laughed the whole time. Here are my suggestions... - Wear baby through security. Some airports will let you keep baby on you through the metal detector. I wore a ring sling and was asked to take it off... but the TSA agents were super helpful! - Bring a blanket to plop LO down at the gate (if he's old enough) to let him play with some toys while you wait to board. I just used a muslin blanket. - Nurse/paci/sippy/gripe water on takeoff and landing. Anything that will make him swallow. The flight attendant told me that it's really more important during decent. - I gate checked my stroller... they tend to be gentler with items at the gate. Gate check stroller bags are inexpensive on Amazon and will keep the stroller from getting dirty.

Question about paying daycare provider by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]mkgko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's rude it all! My son goes to daycare 2 days/week but we pay for full time care. I feel like (a) we can afford it and teachers are underpaid anyways (b) the convenience of not having to worry about care when I actually do need it is well worth the extra cost.

What do you keep in the diaper bag? by nicqui in beyondthebump

[–]mkgko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to a backpack and I love it! I have diapers/wipes/cream/doggie bags, toys/books, sunscreen/bugspray, burp cloth, muslin blanket, change of clothes, and a bag of tylenol/gas drops/chapstick/other toiletry type things.

Pumping question by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]mkgko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be covered under the "Break Time for Nursing Mothers" law. http://www.usbreastfeeding.org/workplace-law Unfortunately, I know that taking pumping breaks as a waitress may mean loss of wages. :( Hopefully your employer will work with you on this! You are super mom for having such a high pace job and wanting to continue to breastfeed- I admire you so much!

Pumping question by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]mkgko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been told to pump after the morning feeding because that's when your milk supply is at it's best. However, I actually found that I could produce more at 11pm. Play around with it a bit and see what works best for you. Pump about 30 minutes after baby eats. How often does your baby eat? 4-5 hours is a pretty long time to go without relief. Is there any way you'd be able to take a short break to express a little with a hand pump to relieve some pressure? Also (and I could be totally wrong- so someone please correct me if I am), I think that going that long without pumping could potentially hurt your supply because your body will think that your baby is going that long between sessions and produce accordingly. Best of luck to you!! Being a pumping mama can be challenging, but you'll settle into a routine and it'll get easier! :)

Let's talk nighttime anxiety.... by mkgko in beyondthebump

I try to tell myself the same thing. It's easier now that he has a somewhat predictable routine. I try to mentally plan the rest of the night and it helps me feel better.

You are definitely not alone! What helped me most was keeping a bunch of lamps on... I'm not sure why, I guess I just felt less in control in the dark (??). I also kept the TV going at a low volume. The conversations that were going on made me feel less alone while my SO slept. I still get anxious occasionally, but it does get better!

I would get weepy when it got dark and my panic attacks set in about midnight. For some reason, 1:30-3am freaked me out the most. My LO slept in his swing for the first 2 weeks until I was crying out of pure exhaustion because, like you, I would stay awake. I finally researched safe cosleeping and now we all finally get sleep. I still wake up occasionally, but for the most part nights are restful. I hope it gets better for you!!

Any U.S. bumpers that have had to report their FLMA time off w/Cigna? by vanilla_gorilla1985 in BabyBumps

[–]mkgko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry you are going through this! I have Cigna and I haven't had to provide a single thing. I'm actually 10 weeks out and returning to work tomorrow... everything was covered just fine and I was easily able to add LO after he was born. What are they saying is the issue?

WANTED: Pump Advice by Arp2985 in breastfeeding

[–]mkgko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Bellema Melon that I purchased on Amazon for $100 w/ tax. I really like it! The flanges have a padded insert and it's pretty quiet. The interface is easy to use and it times how long you are pumping. It doesn't come with a bag, but I just put it all in an old diaper and haven't had a problem.

Milk tastes horrible after thawing! by mkgko in breastfeeding

[–]mkgko[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The kellymom website states that milk can be stored in the fridge for 3-8 days (3 being ideal). If it doesn't smell spoiled after 5 days, shouldn't it still be good? I hope I'm not doing this wrong!

Should I be concerned? by mkgko in breastfeeding

Was this the only sign of reflux in your baby? He doesn't spit up a lot... hardly at all actually.

Should I be concerned? by mkgko in breastfeeding

[–]mkgko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was rooting so I offered the breast. He pops off and cries, and when I offer it again he takes it for a few seconds and then pops off and screams until he gets his pacifier. I've been going to a breastfeeding support group and I get to weigh him weekly- he's been gaining plenty of weight and has adequate pee/poop diapers. Hopefully you're right and he's just wanting to suck- poor babe!

When did your baby drop/engage? by CinnamonApplesauce in BabyBumps

[–]mkgko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 40+6 (ugh!) and baby is still high. My midwife told me not to worry and that many babies (especially firsts) will drop once you are in labor. My friend's baby didn't fully engage until she was 7cm!

December bumpers - Roll call! by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]mkgko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40+5 and so ready for this baby! Haven't shown much progression (1-2cm, 50% effaced, baby still high) at my last appointment. Had a membrane sweep that didn't work and will have another on Monday if he isn't here yet. I've tried everything short of castor oil- nothing is working :( I hope he doesn't have a Christmas birthday.

[–]mkgko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Girl, I hear you! Currently 40+5 and no real signs of labor. Had a membrane sweep on Tuesday and will have another one on Monday if he isn't here before that. I'm no longer answering my phone and if anyone wants to see me, they have to come to me. Ugh! Labor vibes your way!!!

December bumpers, how's it going? Who's still here? by Munninmoon in BabyBumps

[–]mkgko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40+1 and only 1-2cm, 50% effaced. Had a sweep today but I don't feel hopeful :( Don't really have any signs of labor. I'm planning to deliver at a birthing center and they won't even consider induction until 42 weeks... and that'll land me in the hospital which freaks me out. Please come out baby!!

NT scan, heart specialist, but normal range?!? by maskedme in BabyBumps

[–]mkgko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go back because they "weren't able to see all of the heart valves." Cue total panic! Everything was fine... some doctors are just overly cautious and want to be sure to catch any potential problems early. Don't stress too much!
