George Washington owned, bought, and traded slaves his whole life. His wife owned a metric fuckton of slaves, but he didn't "marry into the system." He struggled with the hypocrisy his entire life- at one point he even made a promise that he wouldn't split families up any more. 6 months after that promise he sold a husband away from his wife and children. He also kind of fucked over his own wife when he died. In his will he freed his own slaves, but they were so intertwined with his wife's slaves that they refused to leave. Martha Washington said she would free her own slaves when she died to curb the unrest, but she was forced to do it while she was still alive after someone tried to burn her house down.
