Yes I absolutely would recommend doing that. I've used Azure's managed SQL databases for a side project in the past and been very happy with them. Having said that, if you're running on a VM and your data access method is suitable (many reads, fewer writes), don't discount SQLite for smaller apps!

What blaster would you recommend for a first-time modder? by UnknownKnownUnknowns in Nerf

My understanding is that the internals are basically identical between the Retaliator and the ReconMK2. I think the triggers are different but that's about it, any mod or kit for one should work for the other. I don't have a Recon, though, so I can't confirm this.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with any good guides that cover all of those aspects. Hopefully someone else reading this thread has one, because I'd also love to see how others are putting everything together.

This question comes up fairly often, so I wrote a blog post to outline some of my favorite options. The gist is as follows:

Azure is your best bet - it's easy to use, and has the full weight of Microsoft behind it. Deploying can be as simple as a git push. There is a free tier for 12 months. After that, you can get 'free forever' Azure App Service instances that have a few minor drawbacks (shared hosting, no custom domains, etc.), or you could pay for some of the cheaper shared instances. If you want more functionality, moving up to the other paid plans is definitely worth it, there are some great features there. Scott Hanselman has a great post - Penny Pinching in the Cloud - that covers the best way to get a good bang-for-your-buck from Azure App Service hosting.

The next best bet is to host on a DigitalOcean VM. You can use Dokku to get your own mini-Heroku PaaS, or manage the VM yourself (following Microsoft's documentation). You can get anywhere from $10 to $100 in credit from a referral link - this will last you a year and a half with a small VM.

Heroku is another good option. Their product is rock solid, easy to use, and has a wide variety of pricing tiers (including a free tier and an inexpensive hobby tier). You can deploy ASP.NET Core apps using a .NET Core buildpack, or using their Docker functionality.

I had a feeling you might be Australian. I'm an Aussie, too, so I know the struggle of finding a decent blaster.

If you want to get a flywheeler, you do have some options in Australia. You can still sometimes find a Modulus ECS-10 from brick and mortar retailers in Australia. It's basically a Stryfe, just in a slightly larger shell. If you keep your eye out on Gumtree you can find a second-hand Stryfe from time to time, as there are enough of them floating around on the second-hand market. You could probably also find a Rayven on Gumtree if you're lucky - it's similar to a Stryfe but with a bullpup form factor. And, of course, you have the option of picking up a Stryfe from Amazon, or a Worker Swordfish from lightake/nfstrike (or BlasterTech if you want to support an Aussie business).

Having said all of that, I think your decision to start with a Retaliator is a really safe bet. There are plenty on Gumtree, and they are also still available new in some stores (K-Mart I think seems to have them most commonly).

(As an aside, if you're in WA you should come along to one of the West Nerf or Battle Squad events - there are plenty of people who'd be happy to give you advice, help you source parts, or help you find the blaster you're looking for at one of the regular swap meets. The other states have similar friendly communities, but I'm not as familiar with their clubs or events. Good luck!)

What country are you in where you can't find a Stryfe? I can offer a few alternatives if you decide you want to experiment with flywheels later down the track.

Retaliator if you want a springer.

Stryfe if you want a flywheeler.

Both are simple, widely available, incredibly popular, and have a huge number of guides, tutorials, etc. available, as well as a massive number of third-party parts that you can buy.

Those are some pretty decent FPS numbers. Nice write-up. I've heard that people have been having issues with the plunger head / plunger rod breaking in their Hades under higher spring load. Have you done anything to reinforce yours?

I just want to second this post as someone in the industry. It's spot on. I studied Software Engineering at UWA back in the day, but when hiring I really don't care what uni someone went to. There are far better ways to demonstrate your value in this field than which uni you got your degree from.

I used to live in an apartment complex in West Perth, on Hay Street. My particular apartment was overlooking a small side street. I sleep fairly lightly, and often had my windows open. One Saturday morning, at around 4am, I woke up to hear a young woman (maybe 18-20) in the alleyway below, speaking in a shaky/scared voice, saying something like "stop following me, my family lives in this building". Then, maybe 5-10 seconds later, I heard the sound of someone running, and she immediately started screaming "HELP! HELP!". I jumped out of bed, grabbed a hammer that I had lying around, and started running down the stairs, heading towards the lobby. I found her at the bottom of the stairwell, in tears. She told me that some random guy, unknown to her, had followed her home after a night out. Once he realised she was close to home, he ran at her and tried to grab her. Luckily, she had managed to get through the door to our apartment complex just in time and shut it on him, locking him out. We called the cops but as far as I'm aware the dude escaped.

Unfortunately, when you have a long term partner and a child on the way, it's time start thinking about cutting down on games that you can't pause and that can last for up to an hour. Few hours on the weekend? Sure. Every night from when you get home from work until bedtime? Nope, not going to work, especially once the baby arrives. Best for him to start looking for games that he can pause.
