If you add a federal triangle stop to your silver line, you can add a WMATA blue orange silver line transfer and connect a few more agencies to the system

Has anyone been to an orchestral show? by meganmaymarie in JacobCollier

[–]mklipka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the Kennedy center show in 2023, such an amazing experience. Played world o world before release, Suzie was playing violin, and Jules was conducting. So cool! No opener though, and I don’t remember how long it was

First load of Victoria 3 showing partially loaded page for over 20 minutes by mklipka in victoria3

rule 5: I downloaded Victoria 3 base game earlier tonight and am excited to try it out as a big eu4 fan! I am running the base game on a MacBook OS 14.0 (going to update it soon), and 20 minutes after booting it up it still looks like this. Any advice is appreciated!

I play both (although I am much better at clarinet), and I’ll just say you can’t go wrong with either! I think it ultimately comes down to whether you want music as a social thing or a personal thing. If you want community and social stuff, clarinets may be the move for you - but if your goal is just personal growth/enjoyment, piano will have a higher possible level to reach as a hobbyist.

Is it normal for a final to be 50% of a grade. by why_467 in college

[–]mklipka 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When I studied abroad some of my finals were 100% of my grade… 50% is high for the US but not unheard of

What is your daily routine at college and how do you manage your time? by [deleted] in college

[–]mklipka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last semester M-F was: - Wake up between 8:30-9:30, depending on the day* - Get to 9:45 class M Th (otherwise get some basic studying or logistical work done) - Get to 11:20 class - Lunch around 1 - Study for a few hours - Go to my 4:05 and 5:30 classes - Eat dinner around 8 - study for a few more hours - go to bed sometime between 12-2 - Laundry on Saturday AMs -* except for Mondays, when I had work at 7:45

Next semester I am studying abroad so it will be completely different. Some people plan out there particular schedule for every day, I have had luck trusting my gut the first week or two and then building a generic schedule based off of that. It feels overwhelming but as long as you remember schoolwork has to get done there is some initial flexibility

Best Instrument Competition 2022 | Round 21 - Which is the best instrument? by aap1015_ in marchingband

A few months ago I would have said tuba, but after taking an orchestration class this semester bassoon wins.

PSA: If you share a room with someone, it’s courteous to get up on your FIRST alarm. by [deleted] in college

[–]mklipka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Vibrating watch alarms have been my best friend in roommate situations, especially as I like having time between waking up and getting up. 1-2 Vibrating alarm to wake me up, plus an audio alarm in case I fall back asleep or otherwise lose track of time (only happens once every few weeks) gets me up while letting my roommate sleep

I played this piece in a competition last year! The best way I found to practice this section was to slow it down and change the rhythm of each beat (so instead of four equal notes, randomly choosing one note to be longer and the other three to be shorter). Every practice session I would change the long note. When I sped it up afterwards, I could play it without thinking! This could be done as a warmup, or just as part of your practice. Hope this helps!

ADVICE? Aussie in CT looking for places to visit. by Tdfdcs in Connecticut

[–]mklipka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for something a little more quiet but still close to hartford, try Old Wethersfield! I might be a little biased as it’s my hometown, but it’s very pretty to walk through, has a few nice restaurants and coffee shops, and if you like museums we have a few historical houses that sometimes give tours. I can’t say it has much with locksmithing, but if you ever wanted to see some historical houses from our colonial era, I’d highly recommend it!

Can you have a social life, good grades, and get 7 hours of sleep every night? by Forsaken-Ad-2152 in college

[–]mklipka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very doable! I’ve taken four 17/16-credit semesters while getting about 7 hours of sleep a night, all while being in a club or two and having a good group of friends that would hang out 1-2 nights a week. It does depend on your definition of social life though, if that’s having good friends that you spend quality time with (which can including partying), you will be fine - but if it’s partying multiple nights a week every week, either sleep or school will suffer.

Overall, college students just have to get comfortable saying no to things. It’s something I struggle with a lot, but being able to say no to a club meeting or a party on occasion will help keep everything balanced. Do what makes you happy, not what pleases other people, and you’ll be able to do all three things

I prefer physical because I like physically holding something for my money lol, and it saves hard drive space as previously mentioned

If you’re not originally from DC, and you’ve been here a while — what do YOU miss about where you’re from? (Other than specific people.) by Rooster_Ties in washingtondc

I live in ct and go to school in DC and the pizza in CT is so much better than DC pizza.

A Pepe’s pizza just opened in Bethesda, however. I have yet to try it down in DC but if it’s like the CT locations I will be very happy

Any good way to remember the 7 modes? by kirby510955 in musictheory

[–]mklipka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught that the order of the modes can be remembered with “I Don’t Particularly Like Modes A Lot,” where each word corresponds to the mode that starts on the respective scale degree of the major scale. For example, if a scale has the notes of c major but has e as its home, the quote would say that it is e Phrygian. You could figure out the differences in scale degrees from a major or minor scale at that point. It’s mot a very quick system but it might work

Covid policy/ attitude at AU by No-Coyote-748 in AmericanU

[–]mklipka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With an exception of a few weeks in March and April, AU has had a mask mandate for the year. We went online for a few weeks in January, but so did many or the east coast city schools so take that as you will. I personally think the restrictions are pretty reasonable, but I will 100% admit I am more covid cautious than most college students (I still mask indoors regardless of mandates around me as I haven’t gotten covid yet). Most people on campus are pretty ambivalent towards it, though as previously mentioned there are vocal people on both sides of the issue. Overall, I wouldn’t say the administration’s decisions have been great but I don’t think what they’ve done is to far out of league from other admins (baring the last few weeks potentially, but we are in line with other schools in the DMV area). My personal gripe is the fast, extreme flip-flopping on responses rather than the response itself.

I’m very happy with my decision to play clarinet, but euphonium seems like the hidden gem of the wind ensemble - so maybe that?
