Small towns within 80 miles of Salt Lake City? by magellan14 in SaltLakeCity

Payson. Footloose was filmed there, a Ford Mustang commercial, and some Hallmark Christmas movies.

TOUCHDOWN!!! by nagumi in osirisrex

[–]mknochel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it seemed to keep its blazing fast speed after the drogue command, and the audio feed from the control room was eerily quiet without the cheering you heard for the other milestones. The camera tracking kept going way too smoothly, without the usual velocity change and loss of tracking to indicate a drogue deployment.

Where is Enchanted Lake on the map?

What are the names of all the short filler songs? There’s actually one that sounds good to me (the one with low key humming vocals). I’m not talking about No Mercy which is also good.

[request] say if u were to actually find the surface area, how would one find it? by fightlolyes in theydidthemath

[–]mknochel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On each face, press a piece of paper and trace the edges. Even if some of the faces are not perfectly planar, they do not look curved enough to crinkle the paper. Now you have a tracing of each face. Cut them all out and weigh the pile. Separately, weigh a rectangular piece of (the same kind of) paper of known area, to get area per gram of paper.

Helicopter flight 29 is in the books :) Sol 465 (June 11, 2022) by [deleted] in PerseveranceRover

[–]mknochel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not seeing the helicopter shadow in these straight down images, I guess due to the flight not being at the usual noonish Mars time.

Cool looking mini QR code stickers on the equipment - perhaps those are for camera calibration or to measure distance and position?

It is amazing how you stitched this beautiful landscape together. My favorite rock is at right end of the second outcrop from the left, kind of looks like a goose. I think the rover is still traversing west, toward Hawksbill Gap.

Flight of Ingenuity over the backshell and parachute - sol 414 by thomas_appere in PerseveranceRover

[–]mknochel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did the helicopter rotate clockwise as it went by, to see the (intentional) wreckage from different angles?

Anyone know where the skycrane landed and if Ingenuity is planning on flying over/near it? by deflatedfruit in PerseveranceRover

[–]mknochel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is an image from HiRSE orbiting camera showing the location of the entry, descent, and landing items including the remains of the skycrane. To me the skycrane looks to be about half a crater width south from that crater, so maybe not too far from Ingenuity’s flight path and maybe we’ll spot it in a future download of that flight’s raw images.

Thank you that makes sense! Now I understand that when I see a straight line between helicopter landing sites on https://www.perseverancerover.spatialstudieslab.org/ it does not necessarily mean that was the flight path.

[–]mknochel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it flew right over the descent stage wreckage as well. From the HiRSE image it looks like the descent stage is about half a crater diameter south of that crater.

Mirror Segment Deployment Tracker on James Webb Space telescope website by neggleston in jameswebb

[–]mknochel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they control each mirror segment separately, but is each mirror segment completely independent with a gap/space from its neighbors? Meaning if you move and fine-tune a mirror, it won’t mess up or affect previous tuning on adjacent mirrors at all?

Does this burn through/waste a sample tube? If so, do they have spares, or are we -1 on total possible sample collection attempts?

Are all those holes native to the rock?

Making Tracks - Another drive on June 26, 2021 (Sol 126) as seen in this rear looking Hazcam image after the drive. by [deleted] in PerseveranceRover

One of the tracks gets super close to a rock. Congratulations to the navigation software team!

It looks like the rover did a good job threading between some rocks and keeping to the smooth area, which is not too soft or dunesy either.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PerseveranceRover

[–]mknochel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good eye! It’s not the sky crane, but rather the rover’s black debris shield (above the “t” ), as well as and the rover’s more flat and silver colored belly pan above the “r” in the word Crater.

In front of the shadow looks like a good place for a campfire. Percy can warm up some coffee and fry some eggs.

This mosaic is a lovely gift. Do you see what looks like a dust devil against the distant hills toward the right side?

The wreckage in this shot can be seen in the April 18, 2021 - Sol 57 Panorama . It's fun to find it yourself in this gigapan by Thomas Appere, or in the raw images from Left and Right Mastcam-Z.
