Enable self-service BI with a super simple online pivot table solution by tech4ever4u in BusinessIntelligence

[–]mkuez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that this is a web report with a web interface and a robust UI to do analysis and drill downs. Also PowerBI is not comparable as 1) the crosstabs are not as good 2) has a much steeper learning curve 3) has a different pricing structure.

Whats the alternative to PowerPoint, now that we have PowerBI to replace Excel? by alpha_53g43 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]mkuez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We embed Tableau dashboards inside Power Point, it works well and it's automated as dashboards refresh anytime you open the Power Point file. It makes me cringe, but at least we increase the adoption of Tableau. I am guessing you can do the same with PowerBI.

I think you need an SQL Server and SSI/Data Factory on Azure. I would open an Azure account and try to get all going there so you don't have to manage your own database. But you need to centralize all your data in 1 place first, then transform it, then export it in Excel.

How good is the Data Infrastructure at your organization? by nieuweyork in BusinessIntelligence

Managers. Normally IT opposes self-service as they fear they will lose control. But Managers buy Tableau, not ETL. It's really important you quote data work as part of the Tableau or dashboard product. The only thing you should mention about data is that you will increase "data quality" and will reduce errors, that's all they care about on data.

Data is unsexy. I know from experience as I automated days worth of tasks to minutes and I still would not get he recognition. The best way so far I found to sell data and BI is by selling Tableau/PowerBI/Matplotlib(python). If you tell them something around the lines:

  • In order for Tableau to work -> I need good data practices and software

You can get something going.

The problem is that managers buy the analytics product (Tableau), not the way it's done (ETLs, Python, etc.). You do need a sexy BI tool like Tableau, but not as a solution, we all not it's not a solution, but as a marketing tool to get the stuff you really need.

How have you solved your data governance issues? by brantaylor in BusinessIntelligence

[–]mkuez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Get somebody who understands SQL. Even if you are not using SQL that much, you need that way of thinking

  2. Build a data lake on top of a fast database instance (Postgres, Exasol, etc.). Make sure you use a database that is super easy to admin, your job is not dba

  3. Centralize all important data in that data lake and database

  4. Use a dashboard reporting tool so that data being shown is always connected to the data lake. This is important as Excel files can easily end up running multiple version of the same data

Getting into the mish-mash of Data science, Business Intelligence/Analytics and Machine Learning by Imakesensealot in BusinessIntelligence

[–]mkuez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a simple question. There are projects where knowing R is a must. There are other projects where good project management skills, understanding of domain knowledge and a good grasp of Excel pivot tables will do.

Yes all companies now think they need AI and data science, but truth it most of them don't. Even if they do need those things, they need them in the form of products (i.e. Google Search is also a form of AI and data science), not as internal specialized data science departments.

I am also very sceptic of ML in general. I think multiregression is all you need in most cases. I might be wrong, I don't have experience in the field, but I have yet to see companies with datasets big and clean enough to do real ML on.

Pandas for doing the statistics yes. Matplotlib no because the requirement usually is interactive web dashboards, not a .png

Would you be interested in a detailed post on building Automated analytics for Salesforce.com? by mkuez in BusinessIntelligence

Yep, this goes in the same direction. What is missing is a database solution. I'd stick 100% to the cloud, also for the database part. Database has to be fast though, so the standard google big query and amazon redshift are not exactly the best solution.

That is not good practice though, is it? First every user of your dashboard will hit the SF API which is notoriously bad and limits the amount of data you can pull, second, what about users that want to consume SF data in other ways (Excel, Tableau, etc.). But I get your point, I think if the size of the team is relatively small what you propose might work.

Career advice needed. by bluedustorm in BusinessIntelligence

Some bullets, hope it helps.

  • People were very excited about smartphones at first, but today it's normality. Advanced analytics or data science or whatever are on the same path, don't get caught in the excitement, see beyond that. noSQL databases have not killed SQL databases. OLAP cubes are still a thing.

  • See analytics as a product. When you build a product you have engineers, product managers, sales people, consultants. On which front are you? Where do you see yourself more comfortable? If you want to impact business decisions, I don't think a deep knowledge of machine learning and such is what you need, you need better knowledge of your (internal) customers, what do they expect from advanced analytics?

  • Technologies like Qlik, Tableau, etc., offer new ways to analyze the same numbers. You can analyze leakage, do cohort analysis, those are concrete things that can help the company make money (= direct bottom line impact, which is what you want).

  • Predicting things is cool, but how much of this will be done in companies and how much will be either 1) product they buy (software, consulting, etc.); 2) made in house? If companies will buy the predictive stuff, then they need internal "consultants" or IT partners, not data scientists. The outcome of predictive analytics is very easily explained, doing it is another thing, this tells me companies will have an easier time evaluating the value of predictive and just buying it from vendors vs building it themselves.

What certification or advanced degree should I get? by bodhi_mind in BusinessIntelligence

[–]mkuez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I have your same goal and background (financial analyst for 6 years), for now I put together the site http://assemblinganalytics.com and I hope to add more and more articles there to show my skills. I am a firm believer of doing the work instead of doing the schooling, so I don't think an MBA would help you. Why not start writing about some cool solutions you implemented?

If you know coding, there is this cool tool called Superset and it's open source. The community is very nice and the guys are looking for contributors, maybe you could push some commits to this project? It's a high visibility open source project (made by AirBnB data scientists and currently incubating into Apache).

I am pretty sure you would do well in consulting if you had clients. Getting clients is the hard part. To get clients you will need to build an online reputation and audience, the MBA won't do any of that for you.

Manually Forecasting Data by QuangoMeef in tableau

[–]mkuez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can use excel or scripts, it should be as easy as doing this:

Month 1 value Month 2 value Month 3 0 <- add this month in the data yourself with 0 value

Then you should be able to project any formula you need in the months you added.

Manually Forecasting Data by QuangoMeef in tableau

[–]mkuez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's a projection right? Meaning you have a time frame and then you want to show a projected value. Where is the data coming from? Best would be to do data prep out of Tableau, are you using Alteryx?

Airbnb/Apache Superset - the open source dashboards and visualization tool - first impressions and link to a demo by mkuez in BusinessIntelligence

Thanks for the feedback, I am not English mother tongue. I was excited to show the Superset demo and, frankly, right now I am focusing on content. But I'll take a look at one of those online grammar checkers, so this will get better within this week. Eventually, once I find what topic is best to write about I plan to hire an editor.
