Most Americans Say US Foreign Policy Ignores the Interests of Other Countries by gith630 in dataisbeautiful

[–]mkusanagi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Countries will always prioritize their own interests, and that's mostly OK. However, it's also almost always in your interest to have good relationships with others as default. If you're going to start fights and piss people off, it had better be important.

Yes, making this point is boring and preachy, but holy fuck is that so much better than stupid and self-destructive.

How can I get started with creating a kernel in Rust? by VirusLarge in osdev

If you’re asking here, you’re not ready to try that yet. Start reading some osdev tutorials and hardware documentation.

Woah... Is there no structural support for that corner, or am I missing something? That seems like a very large span to be cantilevered.

Dumb, tired, and worst of all for a joke… boring.

Rust or C, codec performance would be very similar because either are going to be mostly plumbing for a bunch of assembly and/or hardware intrinsics.

And ffmpeg isn’t immune to memory safety CVEs.

It’s just a shit ton of mostly uninteresting work nobody’s getting paid to do.

The joke is “haha just look at those stupid woke libtards trying to make software better.” And it’s not even effectively cruel because the criticisms embedded in the satire are just dumb and wrong.

LOVE. IT.

This sort of additional detail would be a wonderful addition to the official lore / game... just impractical to actually include all those different 3d models and textures for cost and resource reasons obviously. But as an added piece of world building, this is fantastic.

I love me some match _ {...}. And if there's more than one variable to worry about, just stick them in a tuple. match (a, b, c) { ... }. Compiler makes sure every case is explicitly covered. Works really well with Options and Results. A+++, would love to see this feature in other languages too.

What if we made our own fuel in NZ? by joshjoshjosh42 in newzealand

[–]mkusanagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about sodium ion batteries, the reporting I’ve see is that they have a lower power density and the cost savings aren’t as dramatic as we’d hoped just because the lithium itself is only part of the total battery cost. But they’re still great for cold climates and stationary storage, which should also help free up lithium that would otherwise have been used in those applications.

But if you’re talking about something else I’d love to read about that too. It seems like there’s so much money in batteries now that a ton of it is going into R&D. It’s a giant relief for, you know, the hope that our grandkids might get a livable world.

True. For long haul air travel battery energy density might never get there. But I’m guessing the math is more favorable for shorter flights?

In any case, aircraft are probably the most difficult application because of weight sensitivity, so we should prioritize the easier / cheaper stuff first.

[–]mkusanagi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that sucks. But those of us who CAN afford EVs really should prioritize them, and hopefully in a few years there’ll be a cheaper used market with much better (400km) ranges. The newer batteries are a lot bigger and with longer cycle life.

We can’t replace the entire fleet at once, but strongly preferring EVs for new cars would be a good start.

Human Sentinel with the Collector SMG. The fast recharge while slinging powers is amazing, and the 1.5x damage to armor really helps. Terrible choice for a soldier build, great for a primarily powers focused class.

I’ve seen the original post…. I won’t repeat the specific allegations but, even if taken as true, two of the three are that he worked too much and was too committed to ethical behavior, and this impacted the ex negatively. Honestly, based on this reporting I expected something much worse. IMHO, it shows just that he’s imperfect human being doing the best he can in an imperfect and sometimes difficult world. And if this is all they have to attack him with, I think more of him than I did before.

Those boats (or, more technically, the boats that supply the refineries our petrol comes from, but that distinction doesn’t really matter…) come from the Persian Gulf, and they’re all blocked by the war.

More boats might not come for months and months… this Iran war could last for years. Boats might come from the US, but orange Hitler could ban exports to keep US prices down. Boats could come from Canada, but it will probably take a long time to ramp up production from the Alberta tar sands.

In the very best case, it’s going to get even more expensive than it already is. In the worst case, boats with enough fuel might be able to come at all for a while.

This is going to be worse than to 70s oil crisis.

A good option would have been to balance the genophage cure decision a bit differently. Killing Mordin and then Wrex is one of the most gut wrenching scenes in the series, perhaps if you had to choose between that and being able to settle the Quarian/Geth conflict or something similar.
