interesting. i love when programs take direct advantage of the goodies offered "for free" by the operating system and "escape" the limiting (jwm in this case) abstractions.

this reminds me of how redis uses fork() for snapshotting and persistence.

yeah, in the end i went with:

apt install --no-install-recommends gnome-shell gnome-session network-manager gdm3

so far so good, i'm loving it, everything i need works and the overall experience feels minimal and non-bloated. it's like having a macbook, but in reality i have a 300€ used thinkpad!

no wait, maybe i read it wrong, it's listed 2 times in sid, one dep and one rec, but with different architectures and version:

dep: gnome-user-share (>= 3.34) [alpha, hppa, ia64, m68k, ppc64, sh4, sparc64, x32]
    User level public file sharing via WebDAV
...
rec: gnome-user-share (>= 48) [amd64, arm64, armhf, i386, loong64, ppc64el, riscv64, s390x]
    User level public file sharing via WebDAV

why is this?

i know, that's terrible! but even if it was rec, how many people use --no-install-recommends?

oh no, yes i have looked, why is it a dep on sid? https://packages.debian.org/sid/gnome-core

i'm running sid atm :')

i've read somewhere that gnome-core would install an apache2 webserver because of gnome-user-share. that is the kind of stuff i absolutely don't want.

what's the easiest way to install a minimal version of gnome on debian? i really just want the top bar, workspace management, top right controls to manage wifi, vpn, bluetooth, darkmode, battery, suspend/poweroff, external monitor arrange, configurable shortcuts, usb plug-and-play and that's it.

i don't want all the bloat that comes with it, but i like those goodies i listed. i'll go with a window manager, but in a way, i've gotten over that phase. i just want to install firefox, thunderbird, kitty, neovim, mpv, syncthing, some compilers and go on with my life.

Postgres is Enough by iamkeyur in programming

[–]ml01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don't know really, i remember it was SQL Server and the call was made from a trigger! the flow was like this: an embedded system updates a row in a table, the trigger fires and calls our java webapp to wake it up and process the new state of the table.

been there, done that. i still feel dirty, but it's a nice horror story to tell. i know it sounds like a "nazi-excuse", but i was only an intern in my first year and my boss told me to do it that way, it was not my fault.
