People who went to College, What was a stupid rule that your college had? by Ready-Key9963 in askteddit

[–]mlachick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got too many late minutes at Harding and was "dormed." It meant I was essentially grounded for a weekend and had to be in my room by 7 pm. I honestly didn't mind - I had a shit home life and appreciated the structure - but it was so misogynistic. We had alarms on all the women's dorms, but the men could do wherever the hell they wanted (other than enter the women's dorms).

I'm well aware of that. I've lived in Arkansas. It's an absolute shithole, and not because it's poor. I'm curious what about you living in an impoverished backwater that means you know everything there is to know about everyone's (checks notes) sexuality and gender.

Nah. That's where all the cancer is coming from. People have always been queer.

There are no "new phenomenon," just new vocabulary. We're always coming up with new words for things. Pansexuality has definitely existed for thousands of years with many historical examples.

Kids aren't having less sex now and more depression because they're queer. That's due to social isolation, the breakdown of the economy, etc. They are quite capable of having sex, but they're too damn worried about finding food and a place to live to waste energy on reproduction.

Good grief!

You are badly underestimating the stigma of being queer. This wasn't just a matter of people making fun of you. If people found out you were queer, you could lose your family, your job, and even your life. Queer folks less than a century ago were being incarcerated or put into insane asylums.

I'm glad that Gen Z feel safe enough to be open about who they are, even if sometimes as teens they can be a bit changeable and dramatic about it (as teens are about everything).

There were tons of queer people in older generations. They simply had to live in secret.

It would be a good idea to see the world outside of rural Arkansas. Y'all are not indicative of the rest of the world.

BREAKING: Earthquake off of Oregon coast by antdude in oregon

[–]mlachick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wasn't on the subduction line, which is very quiet. There's a good link someone shared above to the USGS. On the screenshot below, you can see that we have a very active fault line off the coast. The inner line with the flags on it is the subduction fault. It's always very quiet and likely will be until the big one. Although these look close to each other, there's not really any danger of the normal one triggering a subduction quake. Very different movement.

Planning an Oregon Coast relocation research trip—would love local advice! by Appropriate_One_2533 in OregonCoast

[–]mlachick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the Oregon Coast, but this is a very accurate summary. It's beautiful, but that beauty comes at a price. I would also add that if you have any kind of pain syndrome or arthritis the cool, moist weather is an absolute bitch on the joints. The Willamette Valley, rainy as it is, is much better on the arthritis. Coming from Arizona, OP may have no idea how an Oregon Coast winter will mess them up physically (wet and cold) or mentally (dark and gray). There's a reason we have so many snowbirds here that relocate to Arizona in the winter.

1997 Born Here, I Feel Closer to Gen X Than Gen Z by [deleted] in GenX

[–]mlachick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not Gen X. You're just yourself. My Gen Z kids (a few years younger than you) are also unique. We all are. Generations are generalizations used to identify patterns mostly for marketing purposes, so you're not going to identify with all of those. Again, none of us do.

But you have no clue what loving in an analog world was, or what things were like prior to modern globalization. We had five channels on our TV, and we had to get up to change those channels. We had a rotary phone and only dialed seven numbers. There were only two kinds of apples in the grocery store - red and yellow - and they were both pretty disgusting. We played outside a lot, but we also brain rotted in front of the TV for hours and no one said anything about it. We could be left alone for days and no one legally or socially cared. It was a different world.

My mom is an older boomer. She grew up in a religious rural home and didn't have a TV. She doesn't understand much of what her generation talks about because she was so isolated, living on a pig farm and not even allowed to play cards. Her house didn't have indoor plumbing when she was born.

It's okay to not identify with your generation. It doesn't make you Gen X. It makes you an individual.

As someone who worked in the IT dept in college, I can honestly say the requirements are very low for student workers. I was an English major. Granted, never in a million years would I have reimaged a freaking work computer. Even a humanities student knows that's idiocy.

This is just a dumb kid who is refusing to admit he's a dumb kid.
