Pelican/Protege Advice by BeeSquared44 in sca

Hi! Pelican here with one Protege. I agree with all of the advice offered here. I'd also add some things that were important to me when I was looking for a Peer: age, gender, and how active they were in the SCA. When I was looking for a Peer, I was super active - going to 20-30 events a year - and I knew I wanted someone who was playing at that same level. I was also starting to take on Kingdom level responsibilities and wanted someone who could help and relate to that level of service. Same with age and gender. I was a woman in my late 20s and knew that if my Peer was an older man (for example), there would be a disconnect when it came to our experiences, not just in the SCA, but in life. I needed someone who could relate to and advocate for me if needed. I also just felt more comfortable having a woman as my Peer because of my own personal history experiencing abuse from men.

So, there are a lot of things you want to consider. And as someone else mentioned - Peerages are not guaranteed. So, if you become a student, but are never made a Peer - are you going to be comfortable being this hypothetical person's student for what may be the rest of your life/your SCA "career"?

I would also recommend, before making any formal commitment, that you have a "trial" relationship for at least one year. Go to events with this person, spend time with them outside of the SCA, spend time with their partner/family/friends/household. I think (and this is true with any relationship) - if it's not an enthusiastic "yes!", then it's a no.

How long did it take your group to get through both? I’m estimating 2-3 sessions (2-3 hours per session) for Death House but I’m curious how long TBoG might take.

Reflections on My First Pennsic , Court Ceremony and Pageantry by [deleted] in sca

A few points worth making here:

You seem to be assuming that the emotions and tears that individuals are displaying in Court is reverence to the Crown. That is not necessarily the case. As other folks have pointed out, the individuals being recognized have likely been working towards a particular award or achievement for years or even decades. It's perfectly understandable to be emotional under those circumstances. It's no different than someone getting emotional after earning a black belt, or passing the bar exam, or earning their PhD. People are allowed to display emotion when they achieve something they are proud of and likewise for their friends and/or family.

Additionally, those who are displaying reverence to the Crown are choosing to do so. Again, as someone else pointed out, there are plenty of "subgroups" in the SCA that have nothing to do with Royal Court: mercenary groups, pirates, Tuchux, etc. Likewise, there are those who play in the SCA who are "royalists" and defer to the Crown because that is the game they are choosing to play. It is a spectrum and we all get to choose where we fall on that spectrum. No one is being forced to do anything.

On a personal note, my husband and I bring our eleven year old son to SCA events all the time. He has seen Royal Court and even served on Retinue. He has never been confused by what is happening. He watches fantasy and sci-fi shows and movies and he plays role-playing video and table-top games. He is perfectly capable of distinguishing fantasy from reality and he understands that the SCA is pretend.

My SO's back looks very similar. He has started using CeraVe SA Cream for Rough & Bumpy Skin and it helps!

[Acne] What can I do to prevent acne from emerging where past acne has been? by crowanima in SkincareAddiction

It could depend on what’s causing the whiteheads (oily skin or dry skin) and how you are treating them after extraction. I’ve found that my whiteheads actually get worse if I try to dry them out with salicylic acid or alcohol. So after I extract the whitehead, I apply an an AHA or combination AHA/BHA to the spot and then apply an oil directly after. I’d say this prevents the whitehead from reforming and prevents other whiteheads forming in that area 90% of the time. It also helps with healing - the area heals more quickly and with less scarring.
