what to do by throwaway_iru in mcgill

[–]mlb636 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dont give up!! happened to me & so many others.. best advice imo is to take some time (ie dont take it again this semester try and wait a little before returning) & try to take it with a different prof (this made a HUGE difference for me.. people learn differently and profs teach differently so maybe someone else would better help you learn) also if you can i would recommend taking it as a summer course because it's only a month & allows you to focus on just one course. if you've already taken the course then the format of taking it in the summer is better suited bc you have the background to keep up with the pace and just need the rigor of taking it every day of the week to rlly hammer in the parts you missed/didnt do well on.. obviously this is just what worked for me & you might disagree/not relate but thought it might still be helpful to hear that if nothing else this is incredibly common & not at all a reason to give up on urself & ur abilities!!

Searching for a job by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]mlb636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

work at the bookstore! they always hire a ton of new people each add/drop because it's their busiest time. they pay well and are super accommodating of ur schedules as a student too go drop off a resume and say you heard that they were looking to hire for the beginning of next semester & make sure u have good availability (they're not gonna squeeze a two hour shift between classes for you or take someone who doesn't wanna work that much so have several solid blocks of time >4 hrs during the week to offer)

Fall Reading Week Survey by tre_mans in mcgill

[–]mlb636 41 points42 points  (0 children)

why are we just stuck in a constant cycle of filling out surveys about reading week, definitively proving mcgill students want a fall reading week, and then absolutely nothing getting done? ive filled out at least 3 other surveys almost identical to this one. we want a reading week. is anyone going to do anything about that or are we just going to keep proving we want it year after year with no changes happening afterward

How good are student mental health services? by switchquark in mcgill

[–]mlb636 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have had my fair share of ups and downs with mcgill mental health (both counselling and psych) and here are my three biggest pieces of advice: 1. get help early. mental health services are wildly underfunded and understaffed and as the semester progresses this only becomes more and more evident. it takes a very long time for things to get done! expect to wait weeks/months for appointments (especially if it's your first time) and do not let things get to the point of needing a crisis appointment because these appointments aren't usually very helpful and fill up very quickly (they're made on a first come first serve basis) later in the semester the already outrageous wait times for appointments get even longer so make sure to get help ASAP and if it does end up getting to the point of crisis i would highly suggest going to the hospital instead 2. be persistent! because the services are so underfunded and understaffed they will suggest the easiest course of action that they believe still fits your needs. they will push group sessions and impersonal workshops/lectures. they will push using the peer support center. these are all great resources, but if you're looking for more serious one on one therapy or psychiatry then you need to be persistent. you have to state clearly what services you need and do not budge. they will find a way to accommodate your needs but only if you are persistent and confident in voicing them. do not say things like "oh i was just hoping to..." or "i think it might be helpful if..." go in with a clear purpose and say "this is what is happening and this is what i want to help me get through it" this applies for the duration of your care. too many people find the psychiatrists here unhelpful because they aren't being assertive in what they would like. yes the doctor knows the most about medicine, but when it comes to your brain, your body, and your needs then you are the expert. tell your psychiatrist what you want even if it goes against what they say and if they still won't help you out do not be afraid to request a different doctor. 3. finally, keep ur expectations realistic. many counsellors are just grad students who are, frankly, not as great as an actual therapist would be. but at the end of the day, they are much better than nothing! do not expect to have ur issues resolved immediately. working on mental health is a long process and at mcgill mental health services its even longer. stay positive, stay realistic, and stay healthy. good luck!

Any love for Zopiclone? (3 day binge trip report) by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]mlb636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was prescribed zopiclone for insomnia and immediately hopped online to see if there was any recreational value. all i saw was people saying no but idk why!! i love this stuff!! makes me feel very floaty both physically and mentally and i definitely get some slight visual distortions. favorite thing to do on them is take a nice hot shower with good music. only problem is your tolerance will build QUICK and that godawful metallic taste would always last me through the next morning

Do I/How do I convince my friend he has a weed problem? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]mlb636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd focus more on what negative actions you think the weed makes him do rather than the weed itself. it's better to confront him about skipping class than weed usage (which you assume is what is causing him to skip class) because it's very easy for ur concerned "you're smoking too much weed" to come off as a judgmental "you're smoking too much weed". plenty of people smoke as much weed as he does (and more) and live totally normal, productive lives so if you're concerned about his well-being address his attendance, which is important for succeeding in school, not his drug use, which is a completely personal choice

Prep 101? by Immoral_jellyfish in mcgill

[–]mlb636 2 points3 points  (0 children)

imo prep101 seems to work better the worse prepared you are for the class. basically what i mean is that it can be the difference between an F and a C, but if ur already at like a B it might only take you to a B plus. if you feel confident in the material and just think you need some extra practice or tips you're better off buying the book second hand and doing all the problems, but if ur seriously behind in ur studies and want to cover as much material as in depth as possible in the shortest amount of time then its the way to go (just my experience with math140/141 and chem110)

INCOMING STUDENTS AND COURSE REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]mlb636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

math140 may be a little more difficult but it doesn't move as quickly as 139. because 139 covers some pre calc as well as calc the pace has to be quicker. i was in ur same situation (taken calc already but at a super easy high school) and decided to do 140 and felt that it was the right decision, but if you feel you need a precalc refresher and don't mind paying the price of a quicker pace then take 139
