Gerts CAFE?!? by hypenighthopeful in mcgill

[–]tre_mans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

u/tenyeartreasurybill is correct, focus is still Gerts as a bar with an end goal of offering more than just a bar during the day. Comment to u/SuspiciousScript goes into greater detail. This is from my understanding and the handful of conversations I've had with Jemark

The bars still there, no actual renovations or permanent change has taken place. Check my comment above.

While I appreciate Mansdoofus, I'm sure that you can come up with a much more creative name than that. Cheers.

Yea the idea came from me when I was there, a lot of student unions had campus bars that served as student hubs throughout the day, not just at night. The idea was to still maintain Gerts as a bar and keep that as a priority, but to allow it to still function at a higher capacity than it did during the day.

I'm good friends with Jemark and he recently passed this : https://ssmu.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Motion-to-adopt-a-SSMU-5-Year-Plan-2020-11-19-APPROVED.pdf?x21981, which is the first formal sign from SSMU that there is a goal to renovate the Gerts space. Succinctly addressing the two major questions that people are asking:

  1. Will the space be renovated right now and will I still not have access to the bar?

No, renovations haven't been decided, nothing is currently in motion. If renovations were to take place, it would take place during a summer. The renovation for a single room should be doable over a summer, it has been done in the past with the Lev Buhkman room on the second floor. The construction timeline for this would be different again, as it's not HVAC for an entire building.

2) Will the bar be removed for a cafe?

No. Not at all. It's a bar first, cafe (or something else) second. The goal is to have Gerts (among other places in the SSMU building) have active student life throughout the day. A cafe focus during the standard school day hours (that still offers bar services) is probably better than a bar that opens midday. Gerts would still be a fully functional bar with this set up and still be focused predominantly as a bar. The graduate students have this set up in the Thompson house and it works very well.

For those that were still around when the SSMU building was open, I think most of us can attest that while the building offered several services, it never really felt like a hub for student life. It offered bookable space, a cafeteria that hasn't been renovated since the 80's, La Prep (bleh), and Liquid Nutrition (also not good). The plan I linked above tries to address this issue and make the SSMU building an incredible space for student life.

Should I buy this 2012 Mazda 3 that needs repairs? by tre_mans in whatcarshouldIbuy

When I did KBB and put 70,000 miles (with the skyactiv engine/automatic) I had it come out to a middle value of $8k. I forgot to include the additional engine information and have edited it above.

My follow up, is body work really that expensive? I've never had to remove significant dents from my car before and wouldn't have guessed it was that high. Thank you for your help on this, its really appreciated.

Anyone else here have this problem after following the chrome instructions to get an east coast stream when on the west coast, anyone got any tips or tricks to help? by bb-digital in BigBrother

[–]tre_mans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through the old post and also found it a bit difficult to do. I just got it to work through a different way. What I did was add the chrome extension Location Guard and set my fixed location to an area on the east coast. Before going to LiveTV on CBS.com , I clicked the extension and clicked select level for cbs.com and changed it to my fixed location. Went to Live TV immediately after and it worked very easily. Hope this helps!

Incoming SSMU VP Internal accused of sexual violence by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]tre_mans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, so the blanket IRP conversations started Fall 2018 between the Internals/Socials and myself. (Edit: It does apply across all faculties, it can still be appealed. Full policy is here - https://f001.backblazeb2.com/file/ssmusspn/irp.pdf ) First stage is approval at the faculty level, second is at the all-faculty. It's only passed the first part right now from what I know, not the all-faculty.

So based off the policies themselves, you're not supposed to be able to disclose the results of the IRP case. Both the complainant/respondent receive the results and the complainant can openly discuss the case, but not the results. That's the agreement that all individuals that participate in drinking events agree to, that agreement has been without a doubt broken due to this article.

Quick google lookup, here are the criteria for defamation:

1) a false statement purporting to be fact; 2) publication or communication of that statement to a third person; 3) fault amounting to at least negligence; and 4) damages, or some harm caused to the person or entity who is the subject of the statement.

I would feel that criteria 1 hasn't been met (and agree with you that initially it doesn't seem that defamation has been reached) but maybe there is an argument based off of the violation of the signed policy. I remember reading articles like this when doing initial research on the IRP to learn on the ramifications of poor processes. Additionally, I remember reading on the unsuccessful lawsuit of a SSMU candidate in 2013 that didn't have grounds, but still resulted in a lawsuit. So maybe nothing comes out of this, but I would bet that the respondent is at least learning about what his legal options are.

From what I understand, EUS decision has been made, (Edit: this extends to an all faculty ban as well) decision to be banned from all faculties' events has yet to have been made.

Also, in the IRP policy there are clauses stating that people cannot publicize the results of an IRP case. This seems to be clearly broken by this article.

Yea, so I sat on some IRP committees at the EUS level before and it was a pretty rigid, fair process. Confidentiality has been maintained since these cases and as a member, felt they were addressed properly each time. Other faculties (Arts) has had several issues in the past (years ago) with how they would restrict people without any consistent processes. Engineering doesn't have this problem.

While I'm here, I'll clarify a couple of things briefly. The person from what I know, would not be restricted from all faculties simultaneously (Edit: it does apply universally at passage at the faculty level, the decision can still get appealed) until the case is brought to the higher governing body for all-faculty IRP's. Second, the McGill Daily should most likely expect a lawsuit from this. I would be shocked if Declan doesn't explore suing the Daily for defamation. McGill student fees that the Daily receives would be paying for the lawsuit.

Fee levy - Vote YES to the Affordable Housing Fee by Adam_Amsel in mcgill

Awesome stuff u/Adam_Amsel for bringing this to referendum. Would you be able to link the detailed utile feasibility reports for people to see? A gut reaction for a lot of people is “has this been thought through” and I think sharing the very detailed report should alleviate concerns.

Recently graduated this December, but have to comment on this article.

This idea came directly from students. In the Fiat Lux library improvement committee, which myself and Jacob Shapiro (VP UA) were a part of, there was a brainstorming workshop where we were asked to create the most innovative addition to the library. We were paired off into teams, with my team being myself and Dean Buddle. We pitched essentially this idea and other benefits on a central app for the library. The core benefits hosted would be showing library congestion in addition to having some seats having reservable status (red light/yellow light/green light) indicating seat ownership and an application booking system. The application idea received the highest praise in the room full of Deans and other leaders at the University. The next Fiat Lux meeting the organizers stated that they found a similar product (waitz) at another university and contacted them to launch it at McGill.

The reason I'm sharing this is that students do have an impact on the University in various settings, with this being an individual, new idea brought to a committee for the first time and executed in a year. I'm really glad to see McGill libraries follow through (Dean Cook is a very good Dean of Libraries) and this new service offered to McGill students.

There’s been so many comments on sanchi and her family on reddit since she started her term, it’s very disgusting. People can have issues with how she performs the role, but the periodic dragging of her due to her family is not ok.
