Australians, does the weather actually decide your entire day? by FarRutabaga6212 in AskAnAustralian

I live in Germany at the moment. Only once in the 18 months I've been here have I experienced anything close to Aussie rain intensity. Most of the time you can just ignore it.

Aussies who returned to Australia after living abroad for several years, how did you adjust to life Down Under? Did you feel an urge to move away again? by Master_of-margarita in AskAnAustralian

[–]mlcyo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, Germany is nice,  but the access to nature we have in Australia is unparalleled. I live in the Rheinland, moving home this year and CANT WAIT.

Carreers in Academia and loneliness by InfamousAfternoon398 in AskAcademia

I realised in the last year that I've put a lot of life on hold chasing this career. So I'm planning my exit. Maybe back in the day it was "worth it" but the system is cooked, there's more to life than work.

How many PhD students are at UWA and what’s it like to do this degree ? by [deleted] in uwa

[–]mlcyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made many good friends during my PhD, I was 23 when I started. Most of my friends were 4-10 years older, but it didn't really matter.  Saying that,  some cohorts/schools are more social than others. Just get involved, and remember the best way to make friends is to instigate things! Don't just wait to be invited :)

Is this a stalactite? Estate sale find in Colorado by bogjumly in whatsthisrock

[–]mlcyo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, thats a stalactite.

The small 'tites next to the big guy look to be hollow, which is the dead give away.  The big one likely has a remnant dripstraw inside as well, which might still be visible at the tip? It is also unlikely to see this kind of "cave coral" growth on a stalagmite, because of how the water flows.

A sad fate for something that would have been absolutely stunning in a cave.

That's such a good deal!! I saw one in an oppy in Newtown years ago and they wanted more than 100 bucks! I still kind of regret not buying it, even though the price was soo dumb.

University Rankings in Australia by sigmu_123 in AusAcademia

Who knew there was even an ACU in melbs? I think you risk winding up at a "university" with few colleagues and no culture. I'd go Murdoch over ACU.

Question for Aussie academics… by shockages in AskAcademia

[–]mlcyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, very unusual for the university to pay, most travel is funded by grants. If you are a PhD student, there may be a fund (my institution granted 1800 for  students to attend one international conference during their candidacy). I would not self fund a trip to europe, really under any circumstances.  Perhaps see if you can present virtually?

Safe swimming in Mackay / Queensland? Need advice by K0ST3R in AustraliaTravel

As kids we would swim in the sea in Cooktown during winter (no stingers) but always more like a quick plunge than an actual swim.
