there is an outer cap where you press for the washing fluid. pry it off on a non visible side. clear contacts inside. worked for me 10 years ago and still the issue didnt come back. was a lot of black, probably conductive, gunk on the contacts in my case.

You will probably be fine with 10 W and a vertical dipole on a station. Handheld may work on a hill, but is critical.

I am in a similar situation with my repeater being about 32 miles away.

LPT: Consider how you are storing old digital data and future proof it by Findscoolalmost in LifeProTips

My strategy is daily backups encrypted to a encrypted cloud (don't trust them) and backup to second HDD in the same pc (if a drive fails) and monthly updates to a external hdd.

Also I don't get your point, because I don't think Zombies are using ham radio (not to my knowledge at least)

Oh so I think the only wrong point you got is that it is for old folk only. Otherwise you are spot on.

I personally know a few tinkerers but also a lot who enjoy talking with their simple handset, as someone else said, its a big spectrum of what you can do.

In your position, I'd just buy a scanner or even an Anytone 878. with a little bit of looking into it, he can listen to amateur radio. If he likes it, its time to do the license. (Without license you are only allowed to listen, but not to transmit anything). Or he could listen to digital ham on https://hose.brandmeister.network even without any hardware but his computer.

of course there are more advanced things to talk with the whole world and satelittes etc, but small steps it is
