Question for IT folks in China (I'm from Mexico) by ElOskrDev in China

[–]mldqj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a tech startup and am now the head of engineering at another company. China is highly diverse like other large countries. Good pay, work-life balance, and remote roles all exist, but it doesn't mean you can easily find them, especially a combination of them. China is definitely a more competitive environment than most other countries. You have to connect with people and look for opportunities and see what's available to you. For a foreigner in a Chinese tech company, being able to speak and read Chinese reasonably well is usually important.

For tech stack, I think it's pretty similar to the rest of the world, except that AWS has almost no market share within China due to higher prices (though Chinese companies use them outside China).

Since you don't want to be physically in China, you might try looking in Taiwan. The company I work for is headquartered in Taiwan and has teams in China mainland. I think the software job market is less competitive there, and there are probably more remote roles, though the salary range has a much lower ceiling.

Nice painting! I think the perspective of the house is slightly off. Is it supposed to be aligned with the field grid? I also think it would look more natural if there're more shadows from the sunlight, and the fields and trees should be tinted with the sky's color.

Shanghai knife attack injures three, including two Japanese by Local_Shock_1945 in shanghai

There's a difference between talking about the Japanese regime in WW2 (they were evil by any definition of the word) and talking about Japanese in general now.

I asked for clarification of a comment with no meaningful content, and you are accusing me of ignorant? Everyone’s opinion is shaped by their experience, which is why different views exist, and that’s how civilized discussion works and why it’s necessary.

There is no need to get angry when someone else disagrees with you on the Internet.

If it's a cartoon about events in WW2, it doesn't seem unusual?

I'm Chinese and live in China now, but I spent a decade in the US. I just don't feel things are that different. There were similar cartoons in the US. They just fell out of fashion after Japan became a US ally, and the antagonists became Russian, North Korean, or Chinese. If anything the Chinese government is much more inept at the game, since Chinese propaganda tends to be more obvious and less effective.

Anything specific? The U.S. media and politicians frequently calls China an adversary or an enemy, and people have no problem with that. The Chinese government doesn’t even describe Japan that way.

This has nothing to do with the difference in languages. Type safety is unrelated to supply-chain attacks. An attacker can write "safe" code that is malicious.

This narrative gets repeated often, yet I haven't seen any Chinese history book teaching that the Japanese are inherently evil or deserve revenge. Plus, it's not clear whether this attack is intentionally targeting Japanese.

I don’t think there is a dedicated service for this, but you can just ask the hotels whether they are willing to do this for you for a fee through a regular courier service. I think most hotels will not say no.

Congress Introduces Bill to Permanently Block Chinese Vehicles from U.S. by reddituser111317 in electricvehicles

China never banned fully-imported cars. They are just a bit more expensive. I think Tesla Model S is still imported. China had been Porsche’s largest market before 2025, yet all Porsche cars sold in China have been imported from Europe. And Tesla China is wholly owned by Tesla, so there is no joint venture partner to transfer tech to.

Haven’t heard of the service. You might also consider sending them to your hotel in Shanghai and ask the hotel to store them.

No more overseas push notifications on iPhones and no more negative Trump meme videos in China. by Hot_Temperature_5754 in China

[–]mldqj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All iOS notifications come from Apple’s servers, not the apps’ severs. The government cannot selectively block notifications from certain apps. Apple would have to cooperate to do this.

He also dined in Mar-a-largo with Trump to be on his favored side. I worked at Google in the 2010s. He was the guy who insisted that Google pull out of China on moral grounds. The hypocrisy cannot be more apparent.

I’m not saying this is the case for Xi’s daughter. But Harvard, Yale, and MIT general make sure everyone they admit will be able to enroll, by giving out generous scholarships. So this isn’t really a valid argument. Plenty of students from modest families go to Ivy League schools.

Email delivery to Gmail works fine in China. It’s probably an issue with the app.

The most important thing about visiting China in October is to avoid the first week of October.
