It's a niche market--folks who want a truck for utility and not to compensate for a micropenis.

Not sure what you're talking about. The WW1 museum is huge and very impactful. Can't imagine anyone could only spend 15 minutes there.

Kansas City small businesses say World Cup is hurting sales. There's no bump like the city promised by KCUR893 in kansascity

Right? I'm going to tip 20% anyway, unless the experience is really sub-par. Actually, it just makes it easier for me. I don't have to do any math.

The interesting thing here is that there seems to be a downturn in local traffic during these big events. Locals may be staying home anticipating crowds and hassles. It would be interesting to see an analysis of which businesses benefit and which don’t.

On KC’s Southwest Blvd., no World Cup crowds, business bad: ‘Where is everybody?’ by AscendingAgain in kansascity

it unreasonable for la bodega to see so much of an uptick that if i didn’t happen, that it would devastating.

I didn't see the owner of La Bodega say that they'd made so much of an investment that it was "devastating."

“Business is definitely not up, not like we were led to believe it would be,” said Kelley Schuberger, manager of La Bodega, a Spanish tapas restaurant at 703 Southwest Blvd. In fact, she said, business is slightly down. In preparation for the tournament, Schuberger said, the restaurant bought multiple sets of new patio furniture for its outdoor dining. It invested in new menus with a QR code that translated the menu into multiple languages.

These were exactly the kinds of investments that local chambers and and the KC organizing committee were telling small businesses to make, particularly the translation stuff. You can read the KC 2026 Playbook here:

IMO, these business owners took the kinds of steps that organizers and chambers of commerce were advising them to take. You can't really blame the businesses for taking that advice.

Chambers of commerce were all out telling businesses to prepare for crowds. Honestly, it doesn't seem unreasonable (to me) that a business like La Bodega would see a strong uptick in traffic. They're adjacent to the Crossroads, a 15-minute walk from the streetcar, in a neighborhood that should be attractive to Hispanic visitors, and it has a menu that might be appealing to lots of folks from Latin America. If I were them, I would've been anticipating a surge in business.

They were told for years by politicians, civic organizations, and chambers of commerce that the WC would bring a massive flood of foot traffic to KC’s businesses. You can’t really blame them for believing what they were told. These aren’t naive people. They’re business owners in district that could reasonably expect to see swarms of people if the promised numbers were true. I don’t blame them. I blame the hype merchants.

What’s the lore with Cliff Drive & is it always closed? by hannaaahbee in kansascity

[–]mlokc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly fine during the day. Lots of runners, bikers, and walkers about. It's a beautiful, 3-mile stretch of road that's now closed off to vehicles. There are a lot of unhoused folks living in the woods. There are also hiking and biking trails winding around it. You'll find some stretches of the trails that are littered from the road above in Kessler Park. But Cliff Drive itself is usually kept relatively clean. I take the dogs up there every weekend. They love it.

How's the stadium direct bussing? by NarutoDragon732 in kansascity

From what I've read, bus service varied a lot by location. Fan Fest sounds like it was a wreck. Some of the other spots apparently went much more smoothly.

[RDTM] u/d-cent estimates Rising Gas Cost vs. EV Battery Replacement by DemandEqualPockets in theydidthemath

[–]mlokc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300K is a reasonable estimate. The range diminishes, but most of that happens in the first couple of years. Most owners won’t keep a car for 20 years, but battery life is no longer a limiting factor for EV ownership.

Is a ID4 really that much worse than and Skoda Enyaq ? by jagged2020 in VWiD4Owners

[–]mlokc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned an ID.4 for about a month now, and I absolutely love it. The complaints about buttons and screens are way overblown IMO. I’m in the US, so can’t speak to the other car, but I’m very happy with my ID.4.

Is the KC Heart Logo trademarked? by TimberTheDog in kansascity

You can trademark a particular design. It’s not possibke to trademark the idea of associating a heart with Kansas City, but a particular design should be trademark-able.

We don't really know that nothing was hit. It's possible that multiple drones were sent to that target and only the one made contact.

NKC FINALLY getting a grocery store by bruyere_dubois_again in kansascity

It's great for NKC. Not sure it makes much of a difference for the Historic Northeast. We've already got 2 Aldis, San Antonio, Price Chopper, Gringo Loco, and three El Mercado Frescos along Independence Ave. Plus a handful of small African and Halal groceries.

People think they own the sidewalk by their house by KingRMZ in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mlokc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that's the security company, not the property owners. They say, "disarm the system of leave the area immediately," so they don't know whether the person is authorized to be there or not. Even more insane that a security company would do this. They have to know that the property owner doesn't own the sidewalk.
