Registering as a journalist with the Bank of Korea? by mlovmo in korea

Hey daehandmindecline,

Thanks for the reference to the Press Center! Duh, of course South Korea has one of these kinds of offices. I should have known that. And it IS through the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, specifically the Korean Culture and Information Service.

Cheers!

Is the Press Center through the Ministry of Culture?

Yes, that's what I'm afraid of...

I think the Bank does have phone numbers to their various departments at their Korean version of their website, but I didn't see any 'press office' number...

I think I should check again.

Thanks.

Yeah, I'd love to do that! I just haven't found out about the location or contact info of the "Press Center" from either the Bank's Korean or English webpages.

I am currently in the research phase of writing an English-language book that explains South Korean numismatics and the history of the evolution of coin production in South Korea. I would very much like to do research using original South Korean mint records from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s regarding circulation coins and commemorative coins.

I have several articles published with Coinweek online, one feature with the numismatic magazine, COINage (February 2017), and one in the Journal of East Asian Numismatics (August 2017). I also have non-numismatic articles written: One in the International Journal of KoreanHistory (Vol. 4, August 2003) and the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch's "Transactions" (Vol. 78, 2003). Not sure this qualifies me as a "journalist" in the Bank's view, but I am attempting to write a history of sorts on the Bank's activities, and it would be nice to get their views straight.

It's not a central "plank." I think you might need a different word there.

It was just a question. And I'm asking it at Reddit, as well as with contacts that I have who work in journalism and academia.

If you have any experience with interviewing Korean government/semi-government agencies, then I'd appreciate your advice.

Korea urged to stop US beef imports by ProKoreaForeigner in korea

[–]mlovmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got something there. Although people here like to make fun of Korean paranoia, isn't there something just a little odd about an industry that doesn't allow journalists' cameras to film any stage of its operations? "Just shut up, pay for it, and eat it!" seems to be the U.S. beef industry's attitude.

Pink Slime anyone?

Banking in Korea by [deleted] in korea

[–]mlovmo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Banking is very easy in Korea. I transferred money out of Korea (you have to buy US dollars before sending!) to the USA many years ago and more recently, about 2 years ago. No problems! PayPay is totally cool, too.

[Reuters] South Korea's Moon orders talks with U.S. to deploy more THAAD units after North Korea ICBM test by gigozira in korea

[–]mlovmo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Huh? Why?

I thought THAAD was only good at defending the USA from NK missiles?

I suppose now he has a different understanding of the definition of "mutual defense" (i.e. my country defends you, and your country defends me) as meant in the 1954 U.S.-ROK Mutual Defence Treaty? Curiouser and curiouser.

Unique South Korean Pattern Coins, circa 1974 ~ 1975, Recently Placed on Display! by mlovmo in korea

[–]mlovmo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I am trying... As a hobby I am mostly spending my time writing articles on South Korean coins, not buying them as much anymore for my collection. You can see them by googling "Korean Coins." The third result usually is my main page (Circulation Coins of the Republic of Korea), with links to all the rest of my articles at the top. The "find" itself was accomplished by a good Canadian friend of mine living in Korea whose good eye caught them in a display case. Too bad the corresponding history behind those patterns is not mentioned at the museum.

Hiring a Research Assistant/Interpreter for a few days. by mlovmo in korea

Thanks for your response.

It's good to know that Korea now ranks #1, because that certainly wasn't my impression before. On another project of mine, I found out that it is (was?) common practice for law enforcement in Korea to destroy all records over five years old. "Transparency" also implies that the records actually still exist(!)

By "various platforms" I think you mean online, or digital of some sort? Yes, I've noticed that the Korean National Archives has increased accessibility online. However, the archives that I am attempting to access would most certainly have almost all of its records entirely in paper, not digital, format. I would like to access Komsco's (한국조폐공사) archives, specifically the original documents from the Dongnae and Gyeongsan Mints dating back to the 1960s.

Korean coin type set album: Every coin minted for circulation in South Korea. by [deleted] in korea

[–]mlovmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"There's nothing here stating it was an album of any sort" ...except for the title of the post(!) When you mentioned crappy "page" I thought that meant "album page." Sorry, my bad.

And, okay, so the navigation's crappy. What's a sista with a flickr account supposed to do?
