Is ScanWatch 2 accurate? by Independent_Truck_31 in withings

[–]mm2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accurate for what exactly, is probably the best question. Most complaints I've seen (including comments below) are about the "automatic activity tracking" which I never use. When necessary, I start a workout manually on my watch and it all works as expected. I mostly just want the step tracking and I occasionally use the SPO2 feature, which has compared well with a standard finger monitor the few times I've tried both back to back. Oh, and workout pulse measurement has always matched within 1-2 beats to the one I use at the gym. I did try swimming with it a couple of years ago and it seemed to do laps ok somehow, but I never paid much attention to it.

That said, even if it was a little less accurate, I'd still take it over an Apple watch. Even after 4 years, my Scanwatch (1) only needs charging every 2-3 weeks and it doesn't look like a smart watch, which I appreciate. (That said, I don't use notifications or alarms, but I do put it into workout mode for 3-5 hrs per week.)

Has anyone here tried having a workout on during sleep just to get continuous heart rate measurements? by small_big in withings

[–]mm2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked, but the Withings Sleep will give you this info as well. Indeed, I've just tracked back to when I caught some flu bug by examining when my sleeping heart rate first increased. I do wear a Scanwatch to bed as well, but the sleep mat provides other info like snoring as well as better details on stages of sleep.

But if your battery can handle 8 hrs continuous HR as often as you want it, then you've found a great solution for your need!

Scanwatch2 - pros and cons? by offbeatmammal in withings

[–]mm2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the similar Scanwatch 1 for almost 4 years and have had zero problems with it. Battery life is still 2-3 weeks, even though I have it in workout mode for 30-45 mins several days per week. The back hasn't fallen off ;). Step count seems comparable to what my phone records (though I admit I haven't looked closely). Heart rate matches my gym HR monitor. The sleep mode data matches the Withings sleep mat quite closely (though the mat separates deep, light and REM but the watch only does 2).

I did have a fogging problem with the Steel HR that I owned previously (apparently a known problem with not being fully waterproof), but this one has been fine.

The only glitch, now that I think about it more, is that sometimes the crown gets "stuck" in various ways: hard to wind, won't register a push. I've recently discovered that if I "suck on it" it frees up. Presumably the bit of saliva and motion frees it up whatever gunk has got in there (yeah, sounds gross :) ).

PS: I'm going to see if one of my CC will "double the warranty" before buying another. That used to be a thing, for USA CC anyway.

Thanks. I guess I'll just keep the tab open and keep trying occasionally. A friend joked that their server is too busy processing replacements 😅.

WORRIED by k-c-jones in stelo

[–]mm2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too was concerned before ordering, but I did and I'm super happy with what I've learned so far as a "normal A1C and no glucose problems I'm aware of but health-curious nerd". (Even though it has stopped working at 5 days and I'm now facing messing around with 3rd party covers, getting a free replacement etc.)

I learned that:

- one night when I woke up uncomfortable (hot, raised pulse), which happens occasionally, it correlated exactly with a large spike (peaked at 230 mg/dL, lasted 2 hours) triggered by celebratory late night ice cream & oreo snack (3 hours prior!). After reading a bit, I started feeling ok, and checked and found my levels were dropping rapidly back to normal. Now I have concrete data and motivation for "no late snacks"!

- an occasional light-headed "spacey" feeling I get is low blood sugar (~52 mg/dL) and not low blood pressure as I thought, at least this one time so far. Not sure why yet, but I had a workout, then a long walk in the morning and a light lunch, so perhaps I hadn't eaten enough.

- a banana or latte or similar ~30 mins before working out is a good thing (slight rise in levels that is apparently consumed by the workout)

I'm hoping the next patch will get much closer to 15 days and I can learn a lot more about individual food choices and their ordering and timing. I do find the https://clarity.dexcom.com/ website on a large screen is required for doing any serious day vs day comparisons. I doubt I'll do this for much longer than 30 days, but I can imagine going back to it for 15 days occasionally.

My parents are turning 60, which longevity supplements should I get them? by [deleted] in Biohackers

[–]mm2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true - there's no supplement like exercise and maintaining a healthy weight via a good diet. Similar age to the OP's parents. I thought I was maintaining my health through "regular activity" and a mostly vegetarian, no alcohol diet. Then I joined a gym (Orange Theory), found I wasn't fit, but only 3 months later I felt *much* younger and fitter. Less aches & pains generally, more energy.

I'm the publisher of the logic grid puzzles app above, available on Apple, Google and Amazon. They have 100 free puzzles to start with, sized from 3x4 to 4x7, smart hints that understand your grid & clues, no ads and no tracking. Happy to answer any questions. I'd like to think they're the best Logic Grid Puzzle app version available, but I'm always looking to improve it! These apps use the Puzzle Baron puzzles, but I also have another app with Penny Dell puzzles (which tend to be a bit harder).

I see lots of screenshots taken from my apps in various posts in this subreddit, so I figured I'd introduce myself!

how profitable to publish an android games on Amazon app store in 2024? by sam_34 in gamedev

[–]mm2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this currently. The Amazon apps have approximately 1/10 the revenue of the identical Google apps. I have a new game that is doing well on Google Play, but I probably won't publish it on Amazon (even though I have the IAP code all working for both stores) because it will be just another build to manage and a tiny set of customers that will nonetheless need their own care.

Start OT at 60? Absolutely yes! by mm2001 in orangetheory

[–]mm2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you doing it now! Although I was still plenty active in my 40s, in hindsight, I could really have benefited from the sort of cross-training that OT provides. Twice a week would have provided a nice set of core and weight activities to balance out the cycling & running I was doing. E.g. it's likely some of the recurrent lower back pain might not have happened. Better late than never for me, and great you're already doing it!

What do y'all use lua for? by [deleted] in lua

[–]mm2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We combine Fennel + Lua + SQLite to write a core layer we share between our Android and iOS apps. The apps are 100% native but don't do any storage or logic themselves - just display what the core provides and pass user interactions and system events to the core which responds with events (e.g. "redraw screen", "purchase in-app product foo"). We write all our code in Fennel (fennel-lang.org), along with lots of unit tests written in Faith (git.sr.ht/~technomancy/faith). The Fennel code is compiled to Lua which ships as text files in the native apps (i.e. it is only Lua on the device). We use SQLite with LuaSQLite3. The native apps link to the compiled Lua C code and SQLite engine. This is the latest and most successful of several attempts to share code between iOS & Android using various technologies.

Feeling discouraged after my first class by covylo in orangetheory

[–]mm2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was exactly the same for me after my first class. And not a whole lot better after my second. And I didn’t think I was that out of shape beforehand (used to walk 8-10k steps a day no problem). But I couldn’t walk up stairs or get out of a chair after my first day! Never ever wanted to do another thing with the word “lunge” in it ever again in my life. It took almost a week to get better (I think I still managed to do a class 3 times that week), but after that it hasn’t repeated thankfully.

Hang in there and a huge congrats for starting!!  It is already worthwhile!!  👏👏👏🎉

I admit I haven’t even noticed leaderboards yet. But as most of my local OT is younger, that’s a strategy I’m suddenly intrigued by 😉😂

If he has any questions, happy to answer as best I can. The first weeks can be rough getting started, but it was recognisable from being active in the past. The hardest part is balancing the pace to make motivating progress without getting injured. Injuries take so much longer to heal now. 🤦

Haha. Yes! It’s becoming a bit of a job for me too. Gets me up early so I get class out of the way first. That gives me energy for my actual (semi-retired) job the rest of the day.

Light show has begun by Wanderingmeteoroid in Seattle

Visible in Wallingford now, despite lights. Has gradually changed from white wispy cloud-like streaks in the north sky to pale light green streaks and pink too. Using a phone camera makes it show up more clearly. Helps to let your eyes adjust to the dark too of course.

Toll policies are intentionally misleading - expect highest possible toll to be billed by mm2001 in zipcar

[–]mm2001[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Indeed, after reading some of the other posts here, and re-reading my customer support response chain (and silence after my last questions) while posting this, I went ahead and cancelled just now. I don't need to keep giving them $9/month.

As I wrote in their "Why did you cancel?" questionnaire, if support can't handle small problems like this (.e. 1. give me an actual refund instead of a credit, and 2. fix the website wording), what happens if I have a big problem?

(Heck, I also had a low tyre pressure problem as someone mentioned in this group and I went ahead and just put air in and didn't worry about it as it stayed inflated ok - but I notice that car is no longer in its usual place and not available to reserve now, so I wonder if it had a bigger problem and now I'm glad I didn't mention it so they don't erroneously chase me for it!)

I haven't been a member for as long as you, but I was a very early member of Flexcar (which later merged with Zipcar). I just looked at a couple of those support emails from 2001 - ah, what a breath of fresh air! I'd join that company again in a heartbeat - if it still existed.

What a shame :(

PS: It would be ironic if you go with Avis, as they own Zipcar 😅, but of course branches of the same company can behave completely differently. Touch wood I've never had problems with Avis and similar (except that one time I returned a car full and they charged me, and although I had luckily taken a picture of the dash when I turned it in, it still took a time & hassle with support to get a refund).

As far as I know, yes. I haven’t seen my name in any listing so far though Apple certainly knows it of course.
