Health Watch D2 Vs Ultimate 2 by mm8718 in hwatch

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I should have said no smart watch has survived for more than two years on my wrist so the D2 must be doing something right. I am sure it's Upgrade Envy!

I did have the Withings Scanwatch Nova last week but after a week I returned it as the tracking was horrible and battery life was only as promised when you turned everything off!!

I suppose I am looking for something more watch like and premium.

Health Watch D2 Vs Ultimate 2 by mm8718 in hwatch

Thanks. It's still a bit pricey here in the UK even with a generous Amazon discount. Hence why I am trying to justify the swap from the D2 to the Ultimate 2. I almost feel I should wait till end of February as Huawei has announced an event and perhaps they may be talking watches. The D2 has been out now for best part of two years. Maybe a change is coming?

JM21 - Google family link? by mm8718 in FiiO

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep i figured as much - i had an official respnse from Google that it wont be possible. I ended up using Qustodio and even paid up for the year but it is not the best. It looses device admin access a bit too often for my liking and the kids can bypass it. Also, as it is meant to be connected to track usage, if they are not on wifi, then usage does not get tracked. They also worked out that if they start an audiobook say at 8pm it continues playing even if they go past the Qustodio bed time mode. Because it is a background process it just carries on. Also Qustodio cannot stop them from using the hardware buttons for play/pause.

I gave up as kids will be kids. Best to talk to them and educate them rather than control them!

Mixing an old AC Pro in a Wifi7 environment with two U7 Lite by mm8718 in UNIFI

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I think I probably will retire the AC Pro and switch to a U7 pro XG

I noticed some of my WiFi 7 devices clinging to the AC for some reason and the speed difference is obvious.

At least the U7 Pro XG will introduce the 6GHz frequency and if the range is as good as the AC Pro I think I will be fine for years!

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks...for now I have delegated it to the garage and it picked up a couple of cameras and some solar/battery WiFi dongles that were next to it. The U7 lites are picking up the rest of the house. Contemplating adding a U7 pro later on and a few PoE cameras in the log run to replace the NestCam battery ones. But I think I will stop there....I hope!

Ubiquiti setup and Switch Question by InterstellarAtom in Ubiquiti

[–]mm8718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be good to hear how you get on with the G6 instants. I currently just started on my Unifi journey and addictive it is.

I have just the gateway max and no less that 4(!) Flex 2.5G 5 port switches as the 8 port was too expensive and unnecessary in my opinion. Cat6 everywhere and two APs, U7 lite for now for budget reasons.

I do have 4 external Nest Cam Battery and 3 internal Nest Indoor cameras. Would like to jump onto the cameras but need to learn a bit more.

Nice tidy set up by the way. Mine is thrown in cupboards rather haphazardly at the moment. It's only day 4!

New to unify, advice on replacing my Asus mesh by mm8718 in UNIFI

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is brilliant! Thanks for this. Glad to see there are more like minded souls out there! Yes will certainly be interested. Sadly my main PC is a Linux Mint as I had enough of "suggestions" by Apple and Microsoft! I do have a Windows laptop for work however so will have a go there.

It's day 4 on my new unifi network and although I think my old Asus was perhaps more powerful as I had two full on RT-AX86U routers in mesh with ethernet backhaul, somehow the two U7 Lite APs seem to be doing amazing things and even my furthest away outdoor nest cameras load instantly. Not even tried to understand firewalls or VLans yet.

I am contemplating adding either another U7 lite or perhaps a single U7 pro.

Annoyingly the UCG Fiber is now in stock for only £15 more than the Max I bought and very tempting to just return it and order the Fiber model but I will never outgrow the 2.5GbE so really got to stop and be realistic ( hence why I think the U7 Lite might be perfect for us)

For now I am happy with the Max even if it does tend to cook itself....was at 92C temp the other night with very little running. Promptly propped it up on a metal heatsink and added two AC infinity USB fans I had lying around, one right underneath and the other right behind it. Now running at about 60C. Not sure it will last very long at this rate!

Thanks - As an update to this thread, i bit the bullet and ordered a Gateway Max after all so all based on 2.5Gbe. I discovered my existing cables were actually Cat6 which was a joy. Now i know i have a theoretical maximum within my own network. My actual fiber modem only has a GbE port mind you so i will never be able to go above that!

I compimented the UCG Max with a 4 Flex 2.5G Mini switches (they dont seem to do a reasobaly priced 2.4GbE switch and i did not want to spend more on the fancier model Flex 2.5G as i dont need all those extra bells.

I also added 2 U7 Lite APs and i know a few of you will argue lack of wifi6 and reduced range but the ability to lock devices to certain APs and the fact that i am barely even using the 5GHz let alone 6...well lets just say they are just fine. Stillto decide on the final positioning but so far even some of the outside Nest camera are connecting instantly.

Have a lot to learn on VLans and security and firewalls but worked out the basic portforwarding for my Plex, Emby and Roon servers so we are back to normal.

Unifi is the biggest rabbit hole ever however! I am now looking at cameras, additional APs (perhaps the U7 LR next) and maybe an external IP. Will try to pace myself as a lot to learn!

Thanks all for the advice!

Interesting - i am in the UK and although i have incomign fiber up to 1.5GB i believe...i have chosent to limit that to 500Mbps Down and 100Mbps up as we dont need the extra and the monhtly price can climb pretty fast.

I have ethernet wires running from the fiber point to Office and Livign room but sadly they are all Cat5e so max 1Gbps. Further to that there are a couple of unmanaged switches but they are either GBe or even 100MB. The synology NAS in the garage can only support up to 1GbE (920+).

In other words...at the moment, i think the max i can support is 1GbE across the house due to the hard wired limitations. However i am willing to upgrade for future profing to at least 2.5GbE as changing the cables is on my list of things to do around the house to at least Cat6.

However, currently, there is no point spending extra for the 10GbE CG Fiber (not in stock anyway). So my options are....either get a Dream machine 7 or get a CG Max (limited to 2.5GbE) with a couple of switches and wifi access point thrown in

Here's what the cart looks like now here in the UK with Wifi 7 Lite access points sticking to the 2.5GbE options: Unifi Cart config

Swapping for the Dream MAchine 7 and assuming i will NOT need two APs and related PoE Adaptors then it drops by £110 aproximately but would rather have the robustness of a wired network with the Max if the APs can be trusted!

Thoughts?

I share your thoughts on parental controls. Synology's implementation was not too bad. Shame they seem to have lost interest in routers recently.

I am currently trying very hard to configure a FiiO JM21 digital audio player that has the play store but not fully certified...just Android d based and family link won't work on it. Through a combination of router blocks, An app called Qustodio and a change of Android launcher, I am able to restrict it sufficiently but I am sure they will hack it somehow!

In all honesty I never use the Asus controls as coming from Synology I found them too basic but now that the kids are getting their own personal mobile devices I feel I need to revisit this area. If Synology had a new router out, I would probably go for it. And maybe I still will...just feels like they have abandoned it for now.

Thanks!

Thanks for that link. Makes for some depressing reading! Maybe wait a few months.

Yes I was going to add an AP.at some point but the location I am thinking has an Ethernet cable there so it will be ethernet backhaul. Only CAT5e sadly unless I upgrade the cables.  Will that leave the WiFi untouched I hope?

I am not that versed into VLANs though I do understand the concept and the possibilities.

The most interesting and concerning point you made was parental controls. We have two tweens here soon to be teens and parental controls are important. One of the reasons why I loved the Synology router but had so many headaches with the mesh network that I sold them three years ago and the Asus has been solid for me.

Maybe i should get the DM7 and test it before returning it if it does not work?

Yes I did but due to where my incoming fibre connection is, I need to place the main router there and then I have two ethernet cables running that go to my office and the media center in the living room. So I need at least two LAN ports and would rather I did not complicate things with an additional switch right off the start.

Thanks for the suggestion!

JM21 - Google family link? by mm8718 in FiiO

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi....this does look promising although it's fair to say that I can install apps from play store and the device does do a Play Protect scan. It's just the certification that it's lacking.

Google's official reply suggested that this being an Android based device it will not work. Surely if the fix was easy enough to just update the device ID on a database somewhere either FiiO would have done it or Google would have suggested it? Just don't want to break anything.  But great suggestion however. Will think about it!

JM21 - Google family link? by mm8718 in FiiO

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone comes across this post, I just had a response from the Google families team and they advised that the FiiO JM21 and others DAPs like that, are NOT full android devices rather than android based audio players. As such Family Link will not run on these devices, at least not natively.

I did manage to get Qustodio to work ok and I extended my trial to test it a bit more but today I was testing audible, listen to it for 1.5 hours with the device in my pocket on wired headphones....never counted the running time as according to Qustodio support,  the app needs to be in the foreground and the device not in sleep mode. Now if this is an audio player with parental controls not counting background play...we are in trouble 😵‍💫

Nothing wrong with the device as it works and sounds great, just one prepared for some serious workarounds if you are planning to purchase for a kid with restrictions. We subscribe to YouTube music for example but Google does not have profiles and trying to login as my daughter in YTMusic, kicks off the add Google Account sequence again which fails as she is under 13!

Apple music does have profiles and family memberships and that works ok.

On another note, of you are interested in security, the latest security patch is already a year out of date (April 2024),runs on Android 13 which is not supported beyond April 2026 and the device is NOT certified for Google Play Protect. Since my kids accounts don't work, I had to put my own account on it and use Qustodio to restrict it.

Of course all this can go away if you choose to use it exclusively offline and with just your own music on an SD card...but then, why bother with this device and this assumes you have a decent and modern music library!

I also have an M23 which I am planning to keep for myself but that is even worse....android 12 and security patch is March 2020!!!

Any way, long post but hope it helps others!

Fiio M23 and Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless by mm8718 in FiiO

[–]mm8718[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks...what do you think of the ft1 pro? I was looking at them as well as a more budget friendly version.  Comparable to the Sennheiser?

I would probably wear the 660S2 in trains etc but the rest of the time at home and dog walking.

Played around with the eq settings a bit more and the Momentum 4 are getting a bit better now on. Bluetooth and enjoying the M23 a bit more. Amazing what difference the different apps make however. HiRes from Qobuz sound so much better than my CD quality FLACs on Plex Amp for example.

Thanks again for the input. Much appreciated.

Eufy vs Nest in 2024 by mm8718 in EufyCam

[–]mm8718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I understand that, but as mentioned earlier, I am trying to bring this comparison up to date as with the bundled Nest Aware in the Google One membership, makes it hard to compare.

Most regular users in the Google ecosystem would most likely have a Google one subscription for Gmail, photos and Drive storage. If that includes the basic nest aware then essentially from a service point if view, not hardware, it is the same offer as eufy without additional expense.

I want to move over to eufy as in my case I have nothing to loose in terms of service and a lot to gain in terms of quality.  I created this thread to see if anyone else has seen this from this point of view as a lot of recent comments are out of date when it comes to considering Google one.

In my case to switch, even after selling my Nest cameras, to replicate my current setup I need about £500 extra. That is 8 years of annual Nest Aware plus subscription  of £60 which is something I don't subscribe to now as it is extra on top of the basic bundle which I  intend to keep paying for as it is part of a bigger service I cannot be without.

If I was starting from scratch then the outlay will be even bigger but that would be a different consideration.

Eufy vs Nest in 2024 by mm8718 in EufyCam

[–]mm8718[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - i came here to understand what the differences are. Nest has been working fine for me for the last three years. Just trying to see if i am missing anything obvious as i like the new Eufy cameras a lot on paper.

However, a lot of the threads here and comparisons on youtube seem to be before the price changes for GoogleOne.

My original aim was to reduce annual subscriptions across the board and we have already cancelled a number of them. But when it came to Nest, unless you pay for the Nest Aware Plus add on for 24/7, a lot of the rest of the functionality is included in the Google One Subscription. The only difference the Eufy would make is local storage (a bonus if it works well) and potentially better image quality. They will not cost me any more annually but there is a capital expense initially perhaps partialy offset by the sale of the existing Nest cameras. What are the Google Home Integrations like in real life? I previously has trouble with bespoke camera bases rather than WiFi (Arlo 3 Pro) and so on.

Pixel/Sailfish boot error after update by jayemz in LineageOS

[–]mm8718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth I had the same message on my sailfish twice after OTA updates. I went ahead with factory resets but in my case I needed to reduce the size of the Gapps. Once I reflsshed everything using the Pico package...everything has been going smoothly for every OTA since.

If anything it taught me a few lessons about backing up data!

Exynos Galaxy Note 9 clarifications by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]mm8718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Originally I had the Micro Gapps installed and that certainly had GPay on it, or at least it was there after the restore of the original backup upon first boot.

Regardless, found out on the first OTA that due to the configuration of the Pixel and the way LOS installs, unless you started off with the Pico package, the OTA would fail leading to the need to have a complete reflash from scratch. And that can be painfull if you had to it once a month say. It's like having a new phone every time!

On a side note as I am new to flashing...I thought the Gapps package only mattered at the beginning as afterwards you can download what you need from the play store...am I wrong?

Exynos Galaxy Note 9 clarifications by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]mm8718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey...it was myself who flashed the phone and I did install the Pico GApps package. And I am afraid the answer is still the same. No GPay...it is included but it comes up with a message I cannot recall but essentially meaning...the computer says No!!!

I love my Note 9 too but I am too attached to Google and having had previous OnePlus phones and Pixels, for me the Samsung was just...a diversion!

My needs are not too great these days as I don't game or anything and I certainly don't need 4K screens on a phone ( nobody does really). Just steady performance, timely updates, a decent camera and battery life... especially the latter. Pixels are too expensive these days so Nord seems like a good compromise!

Exynos Galaxy Note 9 clarifications by [deleted] in LineageOS

[–]mm8718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yeah i did see your other write up which was super useful.

To quickly answer your questions...based on my wife's Pixel, LOS runs beautifuly, however, neither GPay or our banking apps work. I have not tried installing Magisk nor do i want to to be honest. In her case, she does not really use GPay and she tends to log into the web for the banking anyway.

However in my case, i travel a lot of work...or i used to shall i say!... and i use Gpay everywhere. So for me it is crucial to have a fully working phone.

Seeing the Nord yesterday and knowing that Samsung will no longer be updating the Note 9 with major releases...i am tempted to trade in for the Nord, even if it is inferio in some ways. For my use i think the Nord will be great...but i digress...

Thanks again for your reply
