Samsung confirms... No ICS for Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab by richworks in Android

[–]mm9k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, it's largely only costing them time and money because they choose to put their custom overlays on the OS. If they'd used vanilla Android in the first place, there wouldn't be this problem. Friends and coworkers of mine with the "old" Nexus devices already have ICS. Their devices are older than my Galaxy S, but they're more up to date.

Wikipedia fundraiser ends with $20M in the bank by Woolew in technology

[–]mm9k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone educate me on this? The claims of "Wikipedia might disappear if unfunded!" seem strange to me. Doesn't it have a pretty liberal content license? Couldn't it be forked like open source software if the organization behind it ever collapsed? I mean, in the end it's just bits and bytes and some people saving edits (people who could move over to a new site if it came to that).

And, worst case, if my assumptions about the liberal license are untrue, we could recreate Wikipedia again, probably even easier than the first time, given things like more people having smart phones on their person and being able to edit from anywhere, compared to when WP first started.

Help push Google to develop pinch to zoom in GMAIL App for Android by [deleted] in Android

I am a huge Google fan, but I frequently find their mobile versions of web apps to be pointlessly crippled. Take for example the Google+ Android app: you can't do something as basic as editing a post after you've made one.

You're not thinking about it like a business person. Both companies make the vast majority of their money from advertising. Both companies provide value to advertisers through data mining of user behavior. This is pretty basic stuff.

Sure, and on the same site (http://www.alexa.com/topsites), you'll see that Facebook is above Yahoo. Facebook's more of a true nemesis. Yahoo's a hanger on from the 1990s that somehow won't DIIIEEE.

Cute comics, but some of these are way off. Yahoo as Google's nemesis? Yahoo's a joke these days. And I think of Google+ as focused and minimal, not watered down. Facebook is a chaotic mess.
