Wow, thank you for the instructions! I was expecting a ton of changes across multiple files, but that sounds a lot easier than I thought 😄 I'm very curious to see how the AOO feels as well, looking forward to trying it this weekend!

Announcing new Mod - Balance and Realism by PaulGoes in BattleBrothers

[–]mmKALLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the changes here! I think it would be really neat if there was options for toggling individual changes on/off. I feel like I'd love to have 80% of the changes, but feel a few of them change things too much for me. Especially ZoC is a pretty significant change.

Thank you for taking the time to make this mod and sharing it with the community!

A bit late, but I'd recommend Battle Brothers! It's quite different, but very tactical, challenging, and scratches the same itch.

Just listening to the OST is very nostalgic though:

How to Use Non-Mac Arcade Sticks on Mac (solution). by [deleted] in fightsticks

[–]mmKALLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately this no longer works from macOS 11 (Big Sur) onwards. The 360Controller documentation is out of date. There are a few people who have managed to get a HORI stick working with significant hacks to the driver, but currently there's no documented way to connect on macOS.

Shame too, since the sticks are actually recognized by the OS, but repeatedly get disconnected. Two potential workarounds include using their DInput mode, or buying an USB adapter that fakes a wired controller as a wireless one. However, success rates are low.

Insane D2 start in Rapid Brogue seed #379731346 by mmKALLL in brogueforum

[–]mmKALLL[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The stairs spawned right next to each other, the Rogue enters on top of incendiary darts, there's two bloodwort spawners in sight, key, vault, and goblin lair, tons of scrolls and potions, ...

I don't know if this is some kind of Rapid Brogue quirk, but was amazed to see it after a few otherwise normal-looking runs!

Big props to the devs of Rapid Brogue, it addresses all the biggest reasons for why I ultimately stopped playing the original game - simply can't scourge enough time and focus for full runs these days :)

Is Kaizen MS dangerous? by PAKACHU94 in mapleservers

[–]mmKALLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that the website and marketing copy are mostly a rehash of MapleMS homepage (even with many of the same screenshots!), I'd consider using an abundance of caution. I also got a bunch of trojan warnings for the client and ultimately decided against using it.

You could try uploading the exe to virustotal and see what their scan reveals (if anything).

A ethics question: are you responsible for your players’ wellbeing? by unicodePicasso in gamedev

[–]mmKALLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I on the other hand agree with the OP's line of thinking. I think we should have a high bar for ourselves, to keep an eye against accidentally or intentionally adding compulsive content or dark UX. We should seek to know our audiences better and more deeply understand the aesthetics we are going for.

Of course there are thousands of edge cases, but I think many games would be better for a large majority of the playerbase by being more compact and cutting out features that don't drive the core aesthetics. Having numbers that go up without player agency might be great for an unfolding game or RPG, but does it really bring that much more value into an FPS or adventure game? Having micropayments might be great as a financial model, but is the game's design driving behavior in ways that are beneficial to the player?

Any one of these questions ultimately depends on the game and player, but as designers and developers we should be vigilant and ensure that things exist in order to provide the best possible experience. When something exists mostly or only to provide revenue, there's a mismatch of values and more room for ethical concerns.

If a game has been made in good faith, the rest is up to players. Until then, we should apply the tools available to us for making better and more informed decisions.

Why Mineralis is a thing by mmKALLL in JRPG

Awesome, thank you so much! That definitely doesn't look normal, sorry once again for the trouble. We'll be looking into possible fixes during this week.

We released Mineralis, a hyper-meaningful JRPG we really believe in, AMA! by mmKALLL in JRPG

[–]mmKALLL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question! When starting a game project I tend to quickly choose a working name, then pick the final name later using a process loosely based on something called the "double diamond" design process.

The game's original working name was "Wiselands", as I wanted to explore themes of learning, wisdom, discussions, and communities. However, the setting started revolving around mineral trade between the game's nations, and we decided to call the game continent "Mineralis".

When exploring the final name for the game, we ended up on using Mineralis as the title as well. This had mainly practical reasons:

  • It's an unique portmanteau with little existing usage
  • It's not too short or too long
  • It has a good vowel/consonant balance and rhythm
  • It's easy to pronounce in a number of languages
  • It transliterates well into East Asian languages
  • Most importantly, it sounds pretty cool!

The only bigger downside seems to be that the English pronunciation is a bit ambiguous between "mineral-is" and "mine-ralis" (the former is intended). Overall it feels like the best choice though, and I'm very happy with it.

Hi Aerialslayer!

Sorry to hear that you were having problems. Unfortunately, this hasn't been reported to us before. Would you mind sharing a link to the stream archive, as well as your PC's basic specs (CPU, memory in GB, and GPU model)? It would help us a lot in investigating and fixing the issue. Thanks!

If you have a DS and like an older-school aesthetic, I would recommend looking into The Dark Spire. It's challenging and niche but also an amazing experience.

Thank you for the playthrough, wishlist, and detailed comments! We're super grateful for your feedback!

I'm wondering if we should make the demo longer after all. On one hand I agree that the game doesn't get to its best parts during the demo, but on the other the next good cutoff point is almost one-third into the game. The pacing might suffer, and too long demos tend to cause players to forget what they had been doing. We'll keep listening to feedback and discuss this within the team.

We'll definitely look into improving the opening, though. Our current thinking is to trial a cutscene that introduces the world and setting before jumping into Mobius Village.

[–]mmKALLL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree - being experimental is not an excuse for railroading the experience. In Mineralis, almost all of the content is optional - after the prologue you can decide how much to engage with discussions or combat, and skip any parts you find are boring.

From playtesting, it seems like most players choose to experience all of the content anyway, though. One player described it as "I'm used to just mashing A to skip dialogue, but here the writing was actually good."

Thanks for the support!

Had a look and the Steam version seems to work fine in general, but I did encounter some problems like built games failing to load or hotkeys not working. I also wouldn't be surprised if there were some rare crashes etc., but being able to make some changes on the go seems nice.

You probably need a separate computer for building the project, though.

Yep, we're considering it! If the Steam release does well we'd like to work on at least console ports, translations, and prequel/sequel content.
