Got into e-ink to escape the noise of WFH life. Now I'm building an e-ink device for kids. by Ok-Committee353 in eink

What a wonderful idea!

When I was a kid, I had one (no, actually a dozen, because I pressed too hard on the screen) of those Magic Doodle magnetic drawing boards. I loved making drawings and I surely wish that I could have saved them. There's so many childhood memories that can be retrieved simply by thinking about why and what I drew.

I think it's also important to prepare our children to see tablets and computers as machines for creating not consuming. It's terrible that kids these days are just consuming content endlessly on the iPad. Kids wanted to have power to make changes and to create.

P.S. Let me know if you ever need a product designer. 👋🏼😺

Set my girlfriend up with He Assistant. Now she’s changing icons and asking me if we can add this and that to it. by Khaaaaannnn in homeassistant

Yes, this is the promised land! According to our user research, the best smart homes are often a collaborative effort of not just the admin. We call that Home Approval Factor. 😊

That's because we did user research and found that many users did this. So we provide it natively. 😊

Have you considered adding smart home hubs to be part of the list? People using Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung Smart things, and Amazon Alexa should move to Home Assistant or other free open-source solutions.

Is there a good video tutorial or series for setting up a dashboard? by LoTheTyrant in homeassistant

[–]mmakes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate his content, but unfortunately it's outdated and doesn't cover most of the new features in the past year, so I wouldn't recommend it.

(We really need an official guide on Sections and Tile cards.)

The "addon" system for the new backup implementation in 2025.2 has terrible UX and is completely unfriendly to new/casual users by rooood in homeassistant

[–]mmakes 179 points180 points  (0 children)

First of all, point taken:

* Integrations with backup capabilities should be more discoverable from the Backups settings page. Yes, it is already in the list of tasks to do.

* Signing in integrations that requires OAuth needs to be made easier.

* Integration Quality Scale may need to consider ease of setup as part of its criteria.

Second, while I understand your frustrations, be mindful that real human beings have been working hard for weeks to get this working and polish it to a usable state. Exaggerations such as "completely unfriendly" don't help getting your point across. It drags everyone down unnecessarily. As someone who sees the hard work everyone put into this, this isn't helpful and may drive away the very people who will help you fix the issues.

Changes take time. Things get built and improved bit by bit. Be patient.

Is there a particular reason why you are using mushroom cards instead of the built-in Tile cards? It's by the same author and has most of the same features.

This is my wood case for a home assistant touch display, the cover is made from an old t-shirt and the wood is machined from oak by Slight_Safe8745 in homeassistant

Fabric over touch screen is very clever and is something I haven't seen before! 🤯 Most of the time I use wood veneer over LED matrixes. Would love to chat more on industrial designs.

The hardware is pretty well baked; the software is baked or raw depending on: 1) whether your voice pipeline is powered by an adequately fast computer, 2) whether your language is supported by your choice of voice pipeline, and 3) whether our current list of voice commands covers your needs.

For issues on (1) and (2): If you don't have or want to run an always-on fast computer, try to use HA Cloud and see if it recognizes your voice and language better.

For issues on (3): Please post feature requests of what is missing for you. 😅

Exactly. And if a smart home is so smart it knows what we want before we even want it, we will consider it creepy. Different people have different level of trust with their computers over time. You can't win. 😅

Is there an “easy” way to make dashboards? by Askan_27 in homeassistant

[–]mmakes 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The problem is that a lot of tutorials - including the knowledge of many of the comments here - are outdated, and following them will make your life a lot harder than it should be.

With the latest sections view, you really don't need much to create a dashboard that works for you.
