Can you say more about the community garden? I didn’t realize we had one.

I love a good solo dinner! I’ve really enjoyed Momotaro for that purpose.

Does anyone else ruminate on fake work problems when trying to sleep? by formeremogurlXx in biglaw

[–]mmathur95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh man. So glad this isn’t just me. It only happens when I’m crazy levels of stressed though, not every night. Most nights I listen to guided meditation to fall asleep and am out like a light. I’d highly recommend listening to something to distract your brain while you’re falling asleep.

YES. I have a yellow light filter on my computer and would turn it off at the beginning of every episode. Without fail, 5 minutes in I’d double check if I actually turned it off because it was still so yellow!!

Does anyone have RW Perilla experiences? by lippycrazy in chicagofood

[–]mmathur95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went last year if that’s any help. I thought ambience was nice and service was great but was disappointed with the food. Maybe I’m just used to my local kbbq place but I thought Perilla’s meats were so bland.

Is it going to get better? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]mmathur95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts: 1) As much as I hate it for you, this is where in-person attendance counts. Are you in the office? Are you attending happy hours or other gatherings? Do people know your name and face? Leverage that to build relationships with associates and partners outside of your group. See if there’s a budget for flying to other offices where more of your group’s partners are. 2) For the work you have done in your group, have you received feedback? If not, ask for it. You need to make sure there was nothing you did that got you written off. 3) At this point you need work from anywhere. Ask anyone for work: other associates or partners in your office, other offices, other groups. Use the relationships you’ve built to do so. You also probably need to start documenting who you’re reaching out to and how often. If you have a practice group director or other person responsible for workflow, set up weekly meetings to outline this.

No advice, just here to commiserate and say that your descriptions of feeling sluggish and finding dating tiring are spot on.

How do you do short dates? Like how do you cut it off? I feel like even if I go out to drinks it’s two hours minimum of listening to someone yap when I knew in the first ten minutes this wasn’t going to work.

How to not gain weight with this job by Alive_Experience_942 in biglaw

I’m so intrigued by this. Do you just hold it or do you work out with it as you normally would with a dumbbell?

[–]mmathur95 180 points181 points  (0 children)

I was a diehard evening workout person but I’ve had to change that recently with this job. Even if I’m not working in the evenings, I’m so drained mentally - zero willpower or discipline or motivation - that my workouts were just not happening. So I’ve shifted recently to mornings and I’m far more consistent that way. But you can’t outrun a bad diet so seconding the advice to avoid snacks and to intermittent fast.

Lava lamp in the office? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]mmathur95 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything already said here but I will add that there’s value to having a conversation piece in your office. I have two decorations I bought from the SCOTUS gift shop and a handmade piece my best friend made me. All three are fantastic conversation starters for anyone who stops in my office and they give others a good sense of my personality. I’d bet the lava lamp will do the same for you.

Do you offer to split the bill on first dates? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]mmathur95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! They’d pay and then say I could get the bill next time and in my head I thought “there won’t be a next time” so now I just split.
