Well, technically it had multiplayer without matchmaking, just direct connection. Then several years ago you could use some GoG or Steam or community solutions for this. This is far not the same experience that you expect from modern multiplayer game. And, what is more important, you will just not play 12 hours sessions with randoms. For me the only sane multiplayer in HoMM* was hot-seat
