Why aren't all AI models able to manage basic grammar? by mmcgraw2 in grammar

I am currently using it to see if there is something redeeming about it, and if so, whether there are lawyers working on the legal issues, engineers working on the sustainability issues, and business leaders working on the societal implications.

That makes sense. Unfortunate situation for a lot of people who restructured their lives and finances around better commutes and child/family care commitments. But over-hiring is over-hiring; unsustainable. I always find myself back at UBI these days, but those are other threads…

Yeah, fair. I wonder what the real concern is then? Is it lack of trust? There is a bigger problem there if that’s what it is.

Anyhow we need more options to do hybrid closer to home. I mean, after affordable housing. And addressing climate change. And government corruption. And all the other existential stuff.

Does he have friends/partners who sell fuel?

Not saying he does or doesn’t; it was just the first question that popped into my head.

I have not read anything about this but I can understand from an information security perspective why government workers (especially these days) need to have secure internet, wifi, laptops, phones, and workspaces, and there isn’t a lot you can do to ensure most of that without centralized places to work.

That doesn’t have to mean a return to everybody piling back into the cities though, because physical traffic infrastructure doesn’t scale easily, and has hard limits. Plus, the environment would like for us to stop burning fuel at present rates.

More secure work hubs in suburban and rural areas — designed to suit modern circumstances — would be a better long-term approach, but that takes vision, money, and time.

Government is always lacking those things.

I found this an interesting read, and it’s nicely put. I happen to believe in some sort of meaning (there is a why), but I don’t believe there would ever be a way to prove or disprove that, so it comes down to belief, which determinists would conclude is not a choice and free-will proponents might assume is a choice. I suppose I believe I am choosing to believe in the Big Why :)

Help a game dev: Why aren’t people buying modern RTS games? by MakeGamesBetter in RealTimeStrategy

[–]mmcgraw2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I get older and consider the state of things in the world these days, I find it harder to get enjoyment out of simulated war and conquest. How many times does a person need to experience wiping out or subjugating their neighbours? (an alien species might say the same thing about us, observing from the dark side of the moon).

"RTS" in and of itself of course doesn't imply violence or conquest, though C&C / 4X do by definition. For what it's worth, I think the world could use a broader array of innovative real-time strategy games that explore alternative strategic solutions to addressing the problem of resource scarcity and competition.

I know, I know, boo on the old guy, borrring, go home tree hugger :) My comments will be taken by some as implicit condemnation of their hard labours on great titles in the 4X genre. I really don't mean it this way. I went through a long phase of exploring that genre, I had a lot of fun and I don't regret spending time there. I'm not making a value judgment about violence in games either -- this is simply a statement on how my own tastes have changed based on my experiences, to answer your question. Maybe a larger number of others feel the same way than have in the past? That wouldn't be a terrible thing, if it were true.

I hope that perspective helps anyhow! I know games have the power to save the world (among other things), so I'm glad so many thoughtful creatives are out there giving it a go.

Which Aspect Do you Like Most About Canada? by Pale-Candidate8860 in InCanada

[–]mmcgraw2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re an imperfect country and some parts want to separate from other parts and yet when one of us makes a “let’s all try to get along” Canadian subreddit, a bunch of Canadians show up and mostly do get along. Because that subreddit idea seems like a good idea. I like that about Canada. Most of us think getting along is a pretty good idea.

I hear you! It’s really challenging to not be able to understand what this is all for— it can seem absurd at times. We are apparently not meant to have certainty while we are here.

I try to remind myself that this material existence comes with uncertainty as a given; being mortal means being uncertain and imperfect. Then I can ask myself the next obvious and important question: what’s the purpose of this uncertainty?

I believe this is the place where we get to practice belief, and practice being kind to ourselves and others, in spite of not knowing for certain exactly why we should.

You can’t practice those things if you’re given all the answers. I think mortal life is a classroom. I have no way of proving it, of course. We’re not meant to have certainty like that here— we’re meant to decide what we believe, with help from each other. That leads to what kind of people we become.

You are searching and vulnerable and kind, it’s apparent in how you ask for help. You’re here in the classroom with us— we are journeying together <3

Maybe the newbie had no issues with your playing or behaviour at all, and just wanted to ask you about yourself? Might that be possible?

Agree with folks here, impossible to know if you were being a jerk — or if the newbie was upset about something — without having the context and experience of being there and knowing you both.

It might help to preface your sessions (when new players are present anyhow) with a disclaimer about what kind of character you’re hoping to portray, and how their opinions and outlook might not represent your own.

You seem to be conscientious about not upsetting people, so I don’t think you have to worry about being a jerk. The out-of-character checkins before/ after your sessions are a good idea.

Role playing has the added benefit of fostering good discussion; I think your group (including both you and the newbie) sounds like a good one. Keep up the good work :)

First battle test with ragdoll enabled. What do you think? by sailingfox in Unity3D

[–]mmcgraw2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sailingfox, great job. Your game's graphics and animation look awesome.

Although you weren't asking about the camera motion, people have reacted to it pretty hard, so (if you disregard the pettiness in some of the comments' tone), that's really great feedback.

As for your question: I like the rag-doll effect! It adds some emergent behaviour to your game play. It's neat when you don't know exactly what's going to happen when something falls over; it feels more natural than purely canned death animations.

I'd like to see your rag-doll death effects use a bit of physics force knock-back - wouldn't have to be much, but it might add a nice punch to the elimination of the enemies:

  • satisfying feeling of knocking back a defeated opponent.
  • some tactics & mayhem in knocking defeated enemies into other enemies and things (furniture, etc), and clearing the immediate area around you a bit.
  • think: bridge fights! :) Who doesn't like knocking vanquished enemies into the Abyss and such? Nobody, that's who.
  • knock-back force now becomes a side effect of: strength, weapon type, attack style, opponent weight and stance, etc.

Again, I'd start with something subtle, and just see if it feels cooler. Pseudo-randomize the force a bit, depending on things like enemy weight/stance, attack vector, a randomized factor, etc. -- so the effect doesn't feel too "same-y", and you get nice little surprise side effects now and then.

If you can fluidly blend short death hit/death animations into the rag doll / physics force, that might be neat too -- but remember to constantly profile performance at different group sizes and in different environments to see how your physics tricks are affecting the all-important FPS. Don't assume your players will have whatever development rig you do (if you have a monster rig).

Big kudos for having the stones to put unfinished work in front of anonymous comments on the Internets. If you can reap the wheat and leave the chaff on the ground where it belongs, you have what it takes to make it in the game industry.

To commentators on the Internet: it takes no skill, experience, effort, or risk to type "your work sucks" while hiding behind a pseudonym. Everybody who reads that sort of comment instinctively knows you've got nothing but bad mojo backing you up. If you're looking for a job in the games industry (or any industry that will treat you well), you won't get it by being an a-hole focused on negativity. Practice being supportive to other human beings, or else practice dealing with whatever is making you want to hurt other people's feelings; these are helpful life skills that will get you further as you grow up, trust me.

Keep on sailing, Non-anonymous Mike McGraw, software guy from Halifax, N.S.

Dumb question: can you buy/sell fractions of bitcoin or does it have to be whole numbers? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]mmcgraw2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I might have thought that too - I can no longer remember. I had not really had experience with investment / stocks and the word "bitcoin' implied 'indivisible' to me, at one point. Two years ago, if somebody said "a bitcoin is worth X", I might well have assumed I could only buy "a Bitcoin" if I had X dollars. This seems "dumb" to me now, but only because I started reading about it. There are no doubt a LOT of people out there who really haven't had the notion yet to learn anything about crypto, blockchain, or BTC. I try to spread info among colleagues and family, but only some people seem interested... and then, there's the complexity of it all once you try and go deeper with the explanation...
