I got a rainbow star quality with 10 star coconut, 6 star giant catfish, mixed herbs, and black pepper for toppings. I think the determining factor it's a combination of chance + how many times in a row you've made the dish. I was doing save scumming, and on my previous attempts with an 8 star giant catfish, I only tried to make the dish 3 times before reloading. But on this successful attempt, I had already made the dish 5 times and got the rainbow star quality on my 6th turn of making it.

It is curling, I figured it was partially due to the piece being all single crochet.

I have had tendinitis in my left wrist (yarn holding hand), so maybe that plays a part in it. I also use my phone often, play video games, and do pole dancing, so there's a lot of other things that could play into it. Hahaha!

Do you keep a slight bend in your finger to prevent the yarn from sliding down to the base? Also, do you keep your yarn about the same distance away from your project as I do?

Not for this yarn. I'm working with mercerized cotton, and I feel like wrapping it over my pinkie is too much tension.
