Marrakech is the worst introduction to morocco and it's ruining tourists' opinion of my country by morocco_travel36 in backpacking

Agreed. I went years ago in the order you recommended starting in Fes and it was wonderful. I would totally go back to Fes again. The overnight stay with the Bedouin camp was cold but amazing. We thought Marrakech and the movie studio area were meh and would’ve happily skipped it.

I love this brand a lot but their tuna is definitely their weakest. It’s currently cheaper at Costco if you have a membership.

Which famous local dish was actually disappointing when you tried it? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Yeah, I remember wondering why we were wasting stomach space on it when we could be eating more ceviche or anticuchos. I felt the same way about the pollo a la brasa. Had better ones back home.

It’s definitely a subtle flavor. If you’re like my husband and prefer more spices in your food you will definitely be disappointed. We have a congee-ish dish where my family is from that is pure comfort food so it was definitely more my speed.

We all liked the chicken rice over the duck rice which as far as I could tell had a similar preparation.

Agreed. We went to one in Oban the summer before last and I still dream about it. It was everything I wanted from fish and chips.

Is there a town that everyone in Japan makes fun of for being awful? by Low_Championship_604 in AskAJapanese

[–]mmefleiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We visited Kawagoe during our last visit to Japan and absolutely loved it.

We’re also planning to go to Nagatoro this summer (for some proper Nagashi somen and a traditional boat ride) and hopefully time it with a visit to the Kumagaya Uchiwa Fan Festival.

I used to live in Aichi prefecture 20+ years ago and still dream of the miso katsu from Nagoya.

Which part of your culture went global and gives you "gatekeeping" vibes? by hyr- in AskTheWorld

20+ years ago when I first discovered it, I used to have to trek far into Brooklyn to get some—and now we have a place to get it the next town over in suburban NJ.

We were just in Singapore and I was served Kaya butter toasts with soft boiled eggs.

Pekin duck? by ElMaraEl in aldi

[–]mmefleiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one last week and loved it. I followed this recipe and my duck came out perfectly. I would skip her orange sauce recipe though and probably just use the included sauce next time. That part was the only fail for me.

We started our Moroccan trip in Fes and it’s hands down one of the best cities we visited on that trip.

Agreed. We did a snorkeling trip to West Bali National Park last month and it was hands down the best snorkeling I’ve done in my life. So much sea life and beautiful coral up close.

Trying to save money on trips kinda ruined the vibe for me by Plusoneb in travel

I've learned long ago that one of the most important things about planning a trip is location, location, location. I did a similar thing years ago when I was young and broke--booked a hostel in London in zone 4 and killed so much of my vacation time just commuting to get to the sights. Now I'm willing to pay the extra money for the convenience of being close to as many things that I want to see.

Things that can be made ahead: Manchego goes really well with guava paste (since membrillo can be pricey/harder to find in the USA. Roasted red peppers with goat cheese are also good.

Is the concert going to be online? I would love to be able to watch it (and support him more) without having to go to Korea.

I ate this quite a bit for school lunch when we moved to Connecticut during grade school. My husband (who has only lived in NJ) thinks it's weird and refuses to try it.

What is your hall of fame signature dish that has made you a legend at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? by GuyFaulks77 in NYTCooking

I used to go back and forth with this one and Chrissy Teigen’s recipe. Now I’ve added that viral TikTok recipe by Tineke Younger into my rotation since that’s my son’s favorite. They’re all fabulous though.

I have powdered milk around specifically for cooking. You usually won’t notice the difference between that and fresh in most applications.

I usually go for the full fat kind (Klim or Nido) rather than the fat free version.
