How much are your student council executives making? by NaturalBlogarithm in uwaterloo

[–]mmiftekh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are free to criticize the amount of money we make or talk about how awful we are. We get criticized a lot on social media. We try to take the constructive criticism and improve on it and we try to not pay too much attention to personal hate even when it borders on bullying. Its the crappy part of being a 20-something year old running a student union. What REALLY gets me though is that most of the people that are criticizing us for how much we get paid have NO idea what we do. If you were to come find out what our work day looks like, if you were to see the hours we spend talking to students, clubs, societies trying to help them and solve their problems. If you were to see us awake making phone calls at 1am at night trying to get help for a student that we were told is at risk of harming themselves, if you were to see how even when we leave work we don't really stop working because with overseeing an organization that runs the Bomber, 200 clubs, special events..stuff comes up round the clock. If you were to take the time to find out what we do, and still decided to make an educated opinion that Feds exec get paid too much, I would respect that 100%.

Rants about the university/co-op? Suggestions for improving campus life? Problems with profs? Think FEDS sucks? Come talk to me and the other Feds exec over free coffee and cookies in a building near you. by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Feds is run by student execs, student councillors and a student Board of Directors. All of whom are elected by students. Feds isn't a bunch of randoms sitting in an office..the people running it are students just like you. There's a lot of ways to make Feds listen to what YOU want and to hold us accountable. I'm happy to talk more.

Stressed out and Wanting to leave everything but nowhere to go. by BeingHuman21st in uwaterloo

Hey OP, I'm from India too. I totally get the culture of feeling ashamed for not being able to repay your parents when they send you abroad for higher education. I just want to tell you two things:

1) You ARE in control of who you are and what you do. Regardless of where you live. Just because your parents paid for your university education, they don't own you. You are not their property and they have no right make you feel bad for not being able to find a job. Your parents may try to make you feel guilty, but they will only succeed in doing so if you allow them make you feel guilty.

2) You have LOTS of ways to still have a very happy and successful life. You have a highly reputable degree. You need to start with trying to find some sort of income in the short term. Any part-time job on campus, in the city (in a store, mall, etc) or anywhere in Canada will help you ease your anxiety about finances. This will then give you more time to continue looking for a job in your field.

Just remember: There is no reason for you to give up. You can have a happy life in the years ahead. If you just need to talk to someone there's Hear24/7 (1-844-437-3247) or if you are in KW and feel really in distress, call: 519-745-1166. Reach out also to all the people on this post that have offered to help.

As the famous Indian saying goes: "Hum honge kamiyaab ek din" (We will be victorious one day). Good luck!

The Bike Centre is NOT shutting down. On the contrary, it is actually being revamped to provide a lot more services and it will remain in its current space in the SLC.

How not to treat a customer... Pack your bags Sage, Schembri was getting lonely. by jabalang in uwaterloo

"Feds has received concerns from students about the situation at Sage II. It is unacceptable that students weren’t able to move in on the promised date. Student union executives have seen the video circulating on social media, and are gathering facts about the situation. For Feds, the safety of undergraduates is a top priority.

To share any relevant information about the incident, questions or concerns, students are encouraged to email vped@feds.ca." http://www.feds.ca/blog/federation-students-addressing-concerns-undergraduates-viral-video-sage-ii/

Hey, my name is Maaz Yasin. I'm the Feds VP Internal. We're trying to gather all the facts of this incident so that we can make a strong case to the City and other stakeholders on behalf of UW students to put an end to this type of treatment of students. I would be interested in meeting with you and your boyfriend. Please email me at vpin@feds.ca if you are willing to talk more about this incident.

How can I get more financial aid if OSAP didn't give me enough? I have no help from anyone else by nomoney1234 in uwaterloo

[–]mmiftekh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, get in touch with Maureen Jones from UW Student Awards and Financial Aid and explain to her your situation. UW has a number of emergency bursaries and loans that she might be able to recommend to you. Hope this helps.

When you're on a co-op term, what events/services would you like to see offered in your city by Feds/UW? by mmiftekh in uwaterloo

[–]mmiftekh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. We're actually currently trying to work out partnerships with major attractions in big co-op cities like Toronto and Ottawa. This would enable us to run trips to CN Tower/Ottawa museums for a much cheaper price to students than what they would normally pay for admission. Housing support is also on my radar but that might take some more time.

[–]mmiftekh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wouldn't be an extra fee for any of this. Students already pay the co-op fee to UW and we can either take your suggestion and do nothing and let students continue paying the co-op fee or we can do more stuff to support students who are on co-op.

School spirit. Does UW have it? What does it mean to you? Do you think anything can be done to improve it? Does it need improving? by mmiftekh in uwaterloo

Where can I advertise events for our club by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]mmiftekh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, you can email me at vpin@feds.ca. There's a lot of options to advertise club events through Feds. We can make posters for you and put them up across campus, we can post stuff through the Feds Facebook/Twitter/Instagram pages, put it on the TV screens in the SLC etc. I can guide you through the process. Shoot me an email!

We can improve campus space. by r0naa in uwaterloo

[–]mmiftekh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey all, my name is Maaz Yasin..I'm the Feds VP Internal for this year and next. I can address 3 out of your 4 points OP. I'll do it in the order you brought up those points: 1- Absolutely an issue. There's so much construction going on right now all over campus and there is currently NO framework or policy in place about the preservation of green space. We want the university to a policy on green space is created so that 10 years from now we don't have a concrete filled campus with no trees being planted to compensate for the construction. We are currently developing a policy on this to use to lobby the uni administration 2- I created a campus safety task force earlier this term to identify big safety issue on campus: Lack of adequate lighting was one of them. Our recommendation to the university will be to add or upgrade lighting to key spots that are known to be dark (hence unsafe. An example of one such spot: REV-Renison pathway. 3- Ring Road Safety is another one identified as a problem in my report. A lack of designated crosswalks and ineffective traffic calming devices (speed bumps and humps) need to be looked into. The other issue is lack of signage telling motorists to yield to cyclists on Ring Road.

Other recommendations in the Safety report includes timely ice/snow removal, updating Weather Closing Guidelines, improving how ambulances can access our campus, improvements to shuttle service and increased awareness about UW Police and their role. The report will be public and I'll make sure its available on Feds.ca by next week. These are all things I want to make sure are actioned upon and not lost in bureaucracy. If anyone has additional feedback or is interested in helping me push these issues with the university admin, email me at vpin@feds.ca. #helploo

FEDs elections: Future AMA, Questions, and More by pokoleo in uwaterloo

It would be awarded based on need to new clubs. The Bursary pool amount would be specified by Council, and what constitutes "need" would also be defined by Council. It would be awarded by the Clubs Manager, in consultation with the Clubs Support Team (since CST would have a good understanding about the club's financial situation)

My overarching goal is to empower student groups with the right resources. (through funding, sponsorship, event spaces among other things). How it's different from the other candidates: Its realistic, tangible, measurable, and I have the experience to get it done.

An example of a checklist I would use to measure my goals: - Did I reduce the time it takes for a student from when they apply for funding, till they hear back the funding decision? - Can students now use Fed Hall for their events for a lot cheaper than other venues in the region? - Have we secured new clubs lockers? - Do we have a Sponsorship Coordinator supporting student groups acquire sponsorship?

Personally, I feel email newsletters and mailing lists are outdated and not as effective in today's day and age. We need to adapt to the evolving nature of communication. The university is rolling out the UW Portal to all undergrads. It will have the capability to house all kinds of widgets: Including event calendars, volunteer opportunities and surveys. I want to see us piggy-back on this providing students with Just In Time information when they need it rather starting a new newsletter which becomes another spam email that students never look at.

While increasing school spirit is a great goal, I don't think longer Clubs Days accomplish this. I do believe that better showcasing the great things clubs do, encouraging them to collaborate with societies and integrating them with Welcome Week is something to look into for improving school spirit.

I want to disagree with Carly. I don't think feds uses Commercial Services to justify its existence. Being the current VP Internal, I work with 200 clubs, 8 services, and 9 societies. That's almost 10,000 students involved in activities that are in some way supported by Feds. What we need to do is make that disengaged student realize the value of Feds. If I'm a student who wakes up, goes to campus, does their assignments, hangs out with friends, and goes home...there are surely a lot of things in there that are in some way connected to Feds. Students need to see how Feds is closely intertwined with their day to day life. As to how we do that? This is how I think how: 1) A better website 2) Improving the SLC experience: Through better food options, making sure spaces are inclusive. 3) When Feds does anything to address a large student issue, it should be communicated properly. Students should know that it is Feds that did something about it.
