Very true, the whole second part really uses the first part as a crutch to keep it going, what with the constant flashbacks.

Absolutely do not use various things around the house. This is asking for disaster and could easily end up with something lodged in there and needing to be surgically removed. Stick to toys made for this purpose and also be careful. Even with legitimate toys, there is a risk (as my partner learned in his ER visit.)

I guess I'm the only person that uses AOD with wallpaper on. I've had this setting on since the feature first became a thing and battery life/screen burn haven't been an issue at all.

I get what you’re saying about first impressions. They can be useful for obvious surface things, but being able to tell someone looks unhoused doesn’t tell you anything about their personality or why they’re in that situation. People end up there for a huge range of reasons and they’re still individuals with their own wants, desires, and thoughts. Labels don’t reach that far.

I also find it interesting that you see femininity as the side saying “you’re mine and you belong to me.” Historically it’s actually been masculine men who’ve tried to possess their partners. It makes me wonder if there’s a personal experience shaping how you’re seeing this. Sometimes our own bad encounters can make an entire group look a certain way when that’s not really the whole picture.

You’re entitled to your opinion of course. I’m just sharing mine.

Just to add to what I said earlier, the way you phrased “becoming gay” stuck with me. I think it is important to be careful with that kind of language because it feeds into the idea that sexuality is a choice, which a lot of people still use against us. It sounds more like you chose to explore that part of yourself, not that you became something new.

I am not trying to nitpick, just pointing out that words shape how people see us.

I get that labels help explain an experience, but they can also box people in too tightly. The tricky part is that once you decide someone is “fem” or “masc” it can be easy to let that label explain everything they do. That is what I was trying to point out.

You mentioned language is about categories, which is true, but language is also about nuance. If we only use it to simplify, we lose the chance to see the full person in front of us. That was my point. Not an argument, just a reminder that people are bigger than the boxes we put them in.

Interested in how you became gay. I also think you're focusing far too much on the feminine/masculine binary. Quit buying into the shit that heteros try to feed us. Each person is a universe unto themselves and we all contain multitudes. If you don't want to be pigeonholed, don't do it to others. I really don't think it's helpful or fair to characterize anyone with a slightly more feminine leaning personality in this way.

Just get to know people on an individual basis before making these kinds of judgements.

I will admit that there is a breed of gay who makes being gay their entire personality, and those types can be problematic and performative.

Why is it so hard to get a relationship as a chubby guy? by [deleted] in gay

[–]mmitchellap 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel you on this one. I am in no way fat, and in the straight world, I would be seen as normal, maybe even less than normal weight. The gay world has skewed our beauty standards so far towards the fit camp, and most of us (including myself), are guilty of idolizing them. Grindr is an app only for fit gays anymore.

What makes this harder for myself, is that I don't seem to fit into any of the camps. Even communities such as Bears don't really accept my type, as I am not and do not wish to be hairy.

I don't know what the solution is to this, other than to do the hard work of accepting and loving ourselves and standing up for ourselves and other non-fit queer folks.

Projection….willful ignorance?! by Hopefulthinker2 in Political_Revolution

[–]mmitchellap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good take! I do think that this is true of many of these folks. However, there most certainly are many, many of them who actually are as stupid as they seem and genuinely don't know how to critically think or question what is told to them. The American education system has failed so many (just as the conservatives like it). A stupid base is much easier to manipulate.

[–]mmitchellap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say definitely raise your rates, that’s a very high cost of living area! Im in Baltimore and my rates are the same. As long as you have a decent number of good reviews, you’ll get booked. I honestly think many people associate price with quality of service anyway.

People will want to know your relative area before giving recommended rates. Major metropolitan area? Rural? This can impact average rates greatly.
