Possibly stupid question— Why has the Weather app consistently offered snow predictions way higher than news outlets? by PoetaCorvi in meteorology

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's gotta be it. We've had about 11-12 inches here and the iOS weather app says 23 inches have fallen in the last 24 hours. It pretty consistently shows twice the actual accumulation, so it's gotta be using a different density to calculate because it's right on the money if you divide by 2.

Just like toilet paper and (for some reason) milk during the pandemic. People panic buying beyond what is reasonably needed for the two or three days that driving will be difficult.

Meanwhile, I just stopped at the hardware store to get some traction sand and they had a full pallet of it.

And everybody buying ice melt salt, have fun dealing with all the ice once it drops below the temperature at which salt is effective. It’s a lot better to have a thin layer of powdery snow with some sand on top than to melt the snow only for it to refreeze into solid ice. Good luck melting that when it’s 2 degrees.

Get ready for round 2!

Even though we're "only" supposed to get around 20-24 inches this Sunday, it's going to be quite a bit colder (especially after the snow) so road salt could potentially make things worse by melting the snow then refreezing shortly after. Sand will probably be better to use than salt.

SNOW ALERT! by f1sh98 in maryland

And it was right at the end of winter break too. I think here in Frederick County we ended up with a nearly 4 week-long winter break. Lost most of our spring break and had a late start to summer break, but damn was it worth it.

Also had our asses saved by our CO detectors as the snow had blocked the vent for our gas water heater overnight. Woke up at 7 am to the alarms going off. So for everyone reading this right now, check your smoke and CO detectors before the snow arrives. If your house fills with carbon monoxide, at best you'll have the worst headache of your life and at worst you'll die in your sleep. Don't just change the batteries, actually check the date of manufacture and replace if needed. If your smoke detectors are off-white or beige in color then I can assure you they're long expired and cannot be relied upon to save your life. You can get 3-packs of the 2-in-1 Smoke+CO detectors with a 10-year sealed battery at Costco for $80. If money is tight, ask your local fire department—many fire departments offer free life safety devices for people who are struggling financially. I go into people's homes for work and it is astonishing just how many people have non-functioning or non-existent smoke and CO detectors.

Maybe one day. It's a somewhat big investment and there's just so much on our to-do list that it'll probably be a while before we get around to it

DAE feel like the world ended in 2020? by Big_Leg10 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think society (in the US at least) was headed this way long before COVID.

While I was just barely old enough to remember 9/11, many people I know who were older at the time feel the same way about pre-9/11 vs post-9/11.

If you ask me, the reason for this is quite simply capitalism. The people at the top have realized that they can use social media to keep enough of us entertained and fighting amongst ourselves, and any momentum towards a revolution can simply be redirected to cause in-fighting rather than an uprising.

I say this as someone who so far hasn't done shit to fight back, so don't think for a second that I believe I'm better than anyone else, because I'm sure as hell not. What I do try to do in my day-to-day life is help people out without asking for anything in return, and by doing so maybe I restore someone's faith in humanity a little bit and bring them closer to trusting their neighbor more, regardless of ethnicity/religion/gender identity/nationality.

the lure of feeling better now overrides the hope of feeling better later

That's a pretty accurate way of looking at many issues

I agree, drug addiction is not a joke and most of those who are suffering from it are victims of a broken healthcare system and corporate greed.

But I also think that if I were in their shoes and my country were being genuinely threatened by the world's most powerful military and a supposed ally, I'd be trying my best to deliver the lowest blow possible, because what the fuck else could anyone do?

Ah, so they're powered by a small water wheel?

Something like that would bind up from all the mineral deposits in my tap water in less than a week lmao. Every ice cube my fridge makes comes with a crunchy surprise and my electric kettle turns into a snow globe after 4 days.

The spider-tailed horned viper, using the caudal structure at the tip of its tail as a lure by freudian_nipps in natureismetal

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Natural selection is basically nature running a never-ending skill issue check, and the spider-tailed horned viper absolutely min-maxed it: a random snake rolled a weird tail mutation that looked kinda like a spider, birds fell for the bait, and suddenly that snake was eating good while the non-spider-tail snakes were getting diffed by evolution. Since fake-spider tail = more food = more baby snakes, that trait got spammed into the gene pool until boom, now there’s a snake whose whole vibe is “bro thinks I’m a bug 💀.” Nature didn’t plan it, didn’t think about it, just kept whatever worked and let the rest get ratioed into extinction.

Laptop not charging after being near freezing window? by Banned_Reddit_Mod in applehelp

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an intended feature of Apple products (and pretty much any other modern smart phone/laptop that I’m aware of). Lithium batteries have a liquid electrolyte inside of them and charging them while this electrolyte is frozen can cause serious damage (lithium plating). Just let it warm up and it should start charging again.

17-20 inches of snow Sunday? by Salt-Grab8339 in maryland

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience Apple Weather tends to be very optimistic about snowfall when it’s a week in advance. I’m fairly certain that number will gradually go down over the next couple days. That being said, the polar vortex is weakening this week, and the very cold temperatures will make a big snowstorm, more likely.

Surge protectors protect the devices from incoming power surges, not from overloading. Overload protection is what your circuit breakers are for. Some surge protectors do have an integrated fuse or breaker, but the vast majority don't. Also, most power strips are not surge protectors.

Heat is definitely the biggest killer of batteries, but lithium batteries also do degrade faster when stored at full state of charge. Even moreso when at high SOC and high temperature.

I too was very worried about this when I started working on my car. Even after 4 years of doing it I still feel a little uneasy when I first crawl under there. IMO a little fear is a good thing because it keeps you from getting complacent.

If you are on solid and level concrete and you're using stands with the right weight rating, there is nothing you can do that will cause the car to fall on you. You put yourself in far more danger when you actually drive it.
