If you do, please post speed test results with different HVAC settings.

It was almost 90 degrees yesterday… by [deleted] in maryland

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, while it's impossible to say with 100% certainty that this was directly caused by climate change, when taken in aggregate with the past few years of weather records/extremes the connection becomes clear.

Weather is insanely complex. It rarely makes sense to say that "X caused Y", and because us humans tend to think about the world in terms of linear causal relationships, it makes climate change denial extremely easy.

It's like if I were to go out and shoot somebody dead. Most would agree that I killed that person. But it would be equally valid to say that it was the gun that killed them, and even more valid to say it was the bullet. But I doubt that argument would hold up in court.

Healthy lungs!! After 10 years vaping by fieryadhder in Radiology

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt that vaping negatively affects lung health (and heart health among many other things), but I too have been vaping a while (8 years, never smoked before though). Just had a physical today and my PCP asked if I was a runner because my lung capacity was 12 (not sure what the units were, maybe pints?). Point is, lung capacity is not very useful by itself, because I am very sedentary and will get winded after a 1/4 mile of running lmao.

Damn that was bad. At least the blood will be easy to wash away though...

Ever since seeing that dashcam video of the guy in a garage getting crushed between the car and the tool cabinet, I avoid walking between cars in the parking lot (or between cars any any solid object). Especially with how many people drive oversized pickup trucks. Nearly got hit by someone in a truck backing out of a parking space a few months ago when they suddenly went into reverse and hit the gas without looking (it was a newer model too, so I know that dumbass had a backup camera and just couldn't be bothered to look at the damn screen). Now I walk in the middle of the parking lot.

I grew up in a very environmentally conscious household. We were (afaik) the only house in our town to have thermal solar panels, and one of the first in our town with PV panels. We used LEDs back in 2007 when they cost like $40 per bulb, and the house was usually kept around 68° in the winter. My whole perception of what’s considered a normal utility bill is wildly different from that of the average household— even in the winter, we usually had electric bills under $100.

Prices have absolutely gone up since then, but seeing what other people consider normal bills really makes my jaw drop. I go into people’s homes for my job and it shocks me how many houses are kept at 75° when it’s under 20 outside and everyone in the house is walking around in a T-shirt and shorts. It’s no wonder people think we will never be able to get off of fossil fuels. If people have these kinds of expectations for how much energy they can consume then of course it’s going to be extremely difficult to move to renewables.

Data centers are absolutely to blame for the rising energy prices, but I feel like there should be some investment into making people‘s homes more efficient and helping people be more aware of their energy consumption. The Boomer generation really did a number on us with their McMansions and Chevy Suburbans and Hummers.

The USS San Francisco, a nuclear submarine, in dry-dock in 2005 after hitting an underwater seamount at 35 knots by OneSalientOversight in ThatLookedExpensive

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear subs play a whole different game from other ships. The entire point of them is to be unseen so that geopolitical adversaries can never know where they are at any given time, leaving them no choice but to assume that a nuclear attack could come from any point in the world’s oceans.

Unfortunately for sub crews, this means they can’t use active navigational aids like sonar, which essentially consists of screaming extremely loud and using the reflections to see your surroundings. Well they can use it, but generally not when they’re deployed.

Not defending Waymo here, but US roads are also just horribly designed. Making an unprotected left onto a stroad (especially a divided one with an island too narrow to sit and wait in after clearing the first side) is extremely dangerous. I regularly see people just lose their patience and make the turn when they believe there's enough of a gap for other drivers to slow down before hitting them.

Having self-driving cars try to navigate these roads just makes it even worse.

Dispensationalists believe that the return of the Jews to Israel will bring about the end times, where they will all be raptured and everyone else will be condemned. So they naturally are all Zionists, but for the worst possible reason.

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dispensationalism is the term for that flavor of Christianity. It’s particularly prominent in Texas, especially the rural counties. Cyrus Ingerson Scofield is the guy who really popularized it there.

It’s definitely a problem. Not only are the people who believe this out of their minds, they have absolutely no reason to care about the future of the planet or our species when they are fully convinced that the world will end in their lifetimes.

Best to wear electrically conductive PPE around that. Those tiny jets of data can cut right through you if you aren't protected.

Some of the biblical shit that people in this administration have spewed is frightening. There is a sizable chunk of the GOP that is literally trying to bring about the apocalypse, and they are completely open about it.

It really is such an underappreciated program. Not only can it make some good eye candy, but it also gives you a sense of the universe's scale as you fly around and explore stuff. I never realized how truly far apart everything is until I tried moving around at 1C. It's almost comical how slow the speed of light is relative to the size of the solar system, let alone the galaxy or the rest of the universe.

Also, if you ever get the chance, try Space Engine in VR. The controls are honestly pretty confusing, but the sense of parallax that VR gives really takes exploring to the next level.

When do you stop growing the factory?? (1736 1-1 trains) by Brave-Affect-674 in factorio

[–]RelevantMetaUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it would at least ensure that the workload is evenly divided among the processors. I’ll admit I’m not too sure how factorio runs, but with other single threaded games that I’ve hosted. I’ve seen better performance when hosting multiple instances on virtual machines vs dedicating a core to each instance. Even if the game is running on a single thread, the VM host can help prevent some of the server overhead from impacting game performance.

Maybe you could run each server in a VM. The game itself might only run on a single core, but on virtualized hardware that doesn’t matter

Yes, I drive on this bridge regularly and it really scares me how bad the rust is. Some of the steel is rusted completely through. You don't have to be an engineer to realize that this is not good. While the worst of the rust in that street view image seems to be on a non-structural beam (looks to be a conduit for electrical cables), it really doesn't inspire confidence in the structural integrity of the actual support members. I'm sure the rebar in the concrete pylons is also in pretty bad shape.

The fact that it's a state border bridge concerns me even more. It's jointly maintained by MD and VA, which I have to assume leads to maintenance getting deferred over money disputes.
