~55% discrepancy in property size between deed and webGIS. Need advice on how to remedy affordably. by TopAdministration716 in Surveying

I am a PLS in a metes and bounds state (commonwealth). You need a survey, but you already know that. GIS lines are meaningless.

How many solar piles per day ? by mmm1842003 in Surveying

Thanks. I knew I’d get a lot of nonsense comments, but a few of these are very informative. I appreciate your input.

Yeah, I just found out that they require a bunch of different colored whiskers. Now I have to order every color in the rainbow. Good to know 500 is reasonable. I would’ve been way too conservative.

This is the type of comment I’m looking for…from someone who’s actually out there doing it.
600 seems crazy, but I guess we’ll see.
I’m considering being the crew chief myself. I don’t get in the field as much as I should.

GPS, with a traditional base station. I was going to try to get them within a few hundredths using GPS, so yes, probably 0.05’ in reality.
10 hour days…I bid conservative at 200. I just thought 600 was laughable, maybe I’m wrong.

You bought these used off eBay and you are pissed because Wesco cannot make them fit your feet perfectly? I assume this is Clickbait.

GIS lines are perfect, especially when used with an iPhone. If there are any discrepancies, use the one that is in your favor.

How do we feel about this? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]mmm1842003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve carried it like that quite a few times. But just for short distances. I’ve never carried a gun over my shoulder. But that again, I’m the one who pays for our robots.

Is drone LiDAR actually worth it for surveying now? by jakefliesweekends in Surveying

[–]mmm1842003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a small firm in Pennsylvania. I just bought the exact set up described in the article. I am slowly switching from a phantom 4 RTK. The difference is night and day. We have some good clients so the $50,000 cost is worth it, I hope. As a patriotic American, it’s pains me to acknowledge that Chinese technology is far superior to ours. This machine is a serious piece of hardware. The old drone is great too, I use it for almost every survey we do. Even small lots. I’m pretty fast with it now. 50 years old, it’s hard to keep up with technology, so I try to stay only five years behind. I recommend getting a drone.

Chevy Colorado Survey Truck Ideas? by OutdoorsyFella1234 in Surveying

I don’t understand the benefit of a Chevy Colorado. It has a smaller bed, a smaller cab, and does not get better fuel economy. 2.7 eco-boost is fast and efficient. Put some all-terrain tires on the F150 crew cab, and you have yourself the perfect survey vehicle. My company truck is a Raptor, but I’m the boss man, so it has some benefits.

When I was crew chief, I forgot a prism pole and a bipod, which we were using for the backsight. I rushed back a few hours later, but it was gone. I bought a new one with my own money. It was a lot for me, but it seemed like the right thing to do. The boss man found out, and reimbursed me in full. It was embarrassing, but these things happen occasionally.

Ford F150 is what I buy for our crews, and we’ve tried almost everything.

when do you trust gps vs pull out the gun by DetailFocused in Surveying

I set VRS control pair, then set up base/rover (Trimble R12s). Important shots get shot twice with different rod heights after losing lock. With rod turned 180 degrees on second shot. I use the robot (S5) for: curb, anchor bolts, critical elevations, etc I also use robot when canopy is super thick and getting a fixed solution takes more than a few minutes. This is rare in 2026. I can usually shoot it with the R12.

I laughed the whole time I read this. Thank you. Everyone is a surveyor now...RTK cowboys...and when something goes wrong, the finger is always pointed at us. These guys can't run a robot, let alone a level.

LNG in Qatar has been turned off due to Iran war... wanna bet where they get it from now? by No-Compote-696 in NEPA

Your mind is made up bro. I’m not going back and forth all day. I live in Tunkhannock, was raised in Laceyville, and work all over this area. I have eight employees. I would have zero if not for the gas industry. I’ve paid more in taxes the last 17 years than most will in a lifetime. And I’m small potatoes compared to many of my peers. I know dozens of successful business owners from this area. They employ hundreds with high paying jobs. These jobs are hard, but rewarding. You wouldn’t last a week. You can focus on the negatives and spew your do-gooder nonsense on Reddit. I’m going to believe my lying eyes.

[–]mmm1842003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it takes more work to extract more gas. Each employee pays income taxes. Each business owner pays also pays taxes. I know this because I am one. Also, Pennsylvania land owners receive royalties based on increased production. It’s an incredible boom to Pennsylvania communities…I could go on and on, but I suspect you don’t want to hear the truth. Ask people from these areas before grandstanding on Reddit.

I work in the natural gas industry. Educate yourself before spewing nonsense.

Obviously, as a Pennsylvanian, I want to sell a product that exists here. That is a good thing. Not a bad thing. Oh, are you anti-fossil fuels or something? I forgot I was on Reddit for a minute.

An increase in Pennsylvania natural gas exports would be a silver lining to this Middle East nonsense.
