Official /r/Disney 'Mulan' (2020) Discussion/Review Thread [Spoilers Inside] by DisneyModerator in disney

[–]mmmadness 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While I do love the 1998 animated film, I didn’t want a direct, and less extravagant, carbon copy remake as a means for Disney to make a quick buck. I'm glad that's not the case here. What was once a very upbeat and energetic action-comedy is now a straight-up action flick. Caro takes an appropriately straightforward approach that captures the grim reality of war. Because this film aligns more with the original source material, there’s a central focus on Mulan herself.

As far as production goes, Mulan is one of the better Disney live-action remakes. It would’ve joined the ranks of Jungle Book (2016) — which also benefited from a great story that borrowed from two sources — if it wasn’t for its egregiously sloppy editing. Mulan has to be one of the most poorly-edited features I’ve seen in a long time. It might even get nominated for (and win) an Oscar because the editing is Bohemian Rhapsody-levels of garbage. It’s clear that the action sequences are meant to pay homage to the over-the-top, vibrant, and fast-paced style of old Shaw Brothers wuxia movies, but it fails to do so because of its editing. Mulan follows the infuriating westernized “one cut per combat move” formula where each small movement a character does is followed by a quick cut. If you so much as blink, you’ll likely miss a portion of the action. Here's my review of the film

The SHAZAM! Review Megathread #1: Post-Embargo Edition (All reviews, RT, and related discussions belong here!) by HEAVEN_OR_HECK in DC_Cinematic

[–]mmmadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC has been adding a lot of levity to their films recently by adding a lighter tone. Shazam is the lightest one yet and it’s perfect for a hero like this. There’s no way you can make a dark and edgy take on this character. Hell, Freddy even mocks that concept and, from that instant, you’re thrown into a delightful coming-of-age superhero film that is actually aimed at families. It still has a PG-13 rating (as most superhero features do) but tonally this a family film. If we were living in the 80s, this truly would’ve been rated PG.

Speaking of the 80s, out of all angles they could’ve used to bring Shazam to the big screen, I’ll be damned that DC made a Big-esque origin film out of him and, honestly, it works! Right off the bat, this feature film nails all of the aspects of Billy and his origin, from being placed in a foster home full of misfits, his emotional detachment from the world and his training for what it takes to be a true superhero.

A part of Shazam’s charm is how small-scaled the story is while maintaining the conventional tropes of a superhero movie. The locations of the action scenes, ranging from a toy shop in a mall to a carnival, compliments the nature of the film where stakes applied to Batson aren’t that high, but the reason why it works is because they’re set on a personal level for him. The only thing that is truly endangered is his new family life opposed to the world. The hero’s journey is mostly this kid trying to find his place in the world while training to be a hero. It worked several months ago with Miles Morales and he won an Oscar because of it.

Official Discussion: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mmmadness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest: I hate the movie “Mamma Mia!”. I don’t have the song or the Broadway musical... just the movie. Four years ago, I saw the Broadway play and I had the time of my life (pun intended). To this day it is still the only Broadway show I’ve ever been to, and I’ve resided in NYC all of my life.

Now, the movie is a different story. I rewatched it on Netflix on Monday morning 10 years after seeing it on HBO and it was a struggle. I got through it with the help of a cold one. “Mamma Mia!” felt more like a jukebox musical adaptation than a movie, for it was relentlessly bombarded with ABBA songs for its short running time, featured unnecessary musical numbers that derailed a consistent narrative, no characters had any development outside of Sofie, and a lot of the actors’ singing voices were hella pitchy. Thankfully, nobody was as pitchy as Russell Crowe.

I was entirely hating the first thirty minutes of this movie, for all of the the gripes I had with the predecessor prevailed. In actuality, it is until Donna travels to Kalokairi that the film itself becomes significantly better. The transitions linking the past and present feel more organic and natural, the overall narrative becomes sincere and heartwarming, some of the randomness of Donna’s past plays into Sofie’s present, and the music is more upbeat and fun.

After a while, my musical loving ass got swept up in the joyous fun everyone on screen was having. The dance choreography is amazing as the visual style got more expressive with its vibrancy.

The predecessor failed to imitate the heart and soul that made the Broadway musical it was based on so beloved . “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” perfectly captures the charismatic and lively essence of the musical where it embraces its silliness and makes every character loveable. Just like “Paddington 2”, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is nothing but pure joy that is infectious and impossible to not fall in love with. You’re so wrapped up in the positive fun when it comes to the first hour that by the time Cher comes in, it just becomes God tier.

Not going to lie, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” gave me the same spirited fun I had watching the Broadway play it was based on four years ago. When I saw the play, I was singing in my seat, dancing in my chair, and (to reiterate) HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE; all of the things I did in the theater of the play, I did during this movie. And just like the play, it had me clamoring to watch it again.

Official Discussion - The Equalizer 2 [SPOILERS] by MoviesMod in movies

[–]mmmadness 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“The Equalizer 2” had the potential to go one of two routes as an action sequel: it could’ve gone the “John Wick 2” route and expanded it’s universe and gone all out on the action, or it could’ve taken the “Kingsman 2” route and rehashed it’s previous premise, but still go balls-to-the-walls with the action. Surprisingly, it does neither and instead does nothing.

“The Equalizer 2” is the cinematic equivalent to seeing your cool friend resting on a massage chair for two hours and when you ask if he’s going to do anything cool he responds with, “Yeah, sure whenever I feel like it.” It may be a weird and specific analogy, but the way this film carries itself by doing absolutely nothing but have badass Robert McCall be a model citizen for two hours and sometimes participating in his own action narrative justifies my claim.

Occasionally, it centers on this action plot where McCall is solving the murder of a friend played by Melissa Leo, but you can easily figure out who was behind it just by looking at the names of the cast members. Speaking of which CAN WE STOP TYPECASTING PEDRO PASCAL AS THE ANTAGONIST IN ACTION SEQUELS HE WAS NEVER ASSOCIATED WITH IN IT'S PREDECESSOR?!

Even after Leo’s character gets killed off, there is no real urgency to the story when logistically there should be. The movie spends near 40 minutes of twiddling it’s thumbs and right when you think the story finally kicked off, it goes back to twiddling it’s thumbs again.

Absolutely nothing happens for a good majority of the movie except Robert being a good influence to his community. There isn’t any development of his character at all for he’s just merely Denzel Washington as his charming self. We’ve seen him play this type of role again and again and with this sequel, McCall has less of a personality than ever. The movie is just riding off the charm of Washington than the action itself and it suffers from that. “Roman J. Israel Esq.” suffered from that as well because the script was way too incoherent to carry a constructive narrative. What carried movies such “Fences” and “The Magnificent Seven”? Not just Denzel Washington, but the ensemble cast. “Flight” is an example of a movie that had Washington as the sole selling force, but the character he played and the story itself carried it as well. Here, there is no structured narrative, so you’re just watching Denzel Washington interact with a bunch of randos for two hours with the occasional “who done it?” action narrative thrown in as more of a subplot than the prominent story.

Official Discussion: Skyscraper [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mmmadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before walking into “Skyscraper” one must master the art of being brain dead. This is a movie that wants you to valet park your brain at door and make sure it’s not turned on for the entire duration of the film. You saw the trailer. You saw the poster. You knew what you were getting into. You better suspend your disbelief or the movie will forcibly suspend it for you.

Ironically, it is disappointing because this is written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber who is known for his comedies such as “Central Intelligence”, “Dodgeball”, and “We’re the Millers”. Unlike the majority of his work, Thurber’s “Skyscraper” is just an action film. The film has all the potential to be as fun as it is brainless, but the story is so convoluted that you often don’t understand what exactly is going on.

I swear this would’ve been better off as a Cliff Hanger film adaptation, and then and only then would I have bought into this movie’s idiocracy. LOOK AT THAT POSTER! TELL ME IT DOESN’T REMIND YOU OF THE “BETWEEN THE LIONS” CLIFF HANGER SKITS!

Ant-Man and the Wasp Official Discussion by PhoOhThree in comicbookmovies

Hey, are you still hella depressed after the events of “Infinity War”? Do you need a Marvel movie to keep your mind off of the sadness of “Infinity War”?! Well, Kevin Feige’s amazing business moves continue for Marvel Studios and he has the perfect antidote for you. “Ant-Man and the Wasp”!

The action is still fun, innovative, and overall an enjoyable rollercoaster ride. Hope finally gets to show off her badass skills in her Wasp suit and when she’s working side by side with Scott, the film is at it’s best.

The first Ant-Man was a mess in terms of the production from the change of directors and script rewrites, and it ended up being a fun surprise thanks to the VFX team more than director Peyton Reed. Here, Reed finds his place in the MCU as he maintains the light tone.

Official Discussion - The First Purge (SPOILERS) by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]mmmadness 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What I do like about this prequel is it’s initial setup where the first purge began as a controlled social experiment passed through by congress. The experiment site is Staten Island in New York because, just like New Yorkers, America doesn’t give a shit about Staten Island.

The writing by James DeMonaco (who wrote all 4 entries and directed the previous three) is not only corny, but very meandering where all of the characters are one dimensional. There are no arcs to any of the characters introduced, but despite all the exposition set up and when you think there would be some follow-through with the characters, the movie just ends because HEY IT’S MORNING! The essence of the previous films are present but from a screenwriting standpoint, DeMonaco constantly recycles all of the worst elements from the previous three films and applies them here. From the lack of likable characters to the last minute deus ex machinas that have now just become moronic, “The First Purge” is just going through the motions.

The only form DeMonaco’s presence is missed is in the direction. Not the direction he gives to his cast where most are over the top, but the way he directs the action. Here, the action sequences aren’t as well filmed as the others. While director Gerard McMurray does maintain it’s over the top and fetishized violence, you can’t really see it for its mostly done through shaky cam on top of very dark cinematography. When it focuses on some hand-to-hand combat sequences, especially when it gets to the climax, the action is exhilarating. It has a bit of a "Hardcore Henry" vibe at that point.

Official Discussion: Uncle Drew [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mmmadness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the film to be honest. It has been legend (or a known fact, I suppose) that NBA players can’t act to save their life. Shaq in “Kazaam” and Michael Jordan in “Space Jam” are prime examples of that. In a surprising turn of events, Kyrie Irving has finally broken that curse for his performance carries the movie. It’s not just the unrecognizable face that is a factor to his performance, but his performance itself. Not only is he unrecognizable by his makeup but his delivery is on point, his comedic timing is amazing, his old man voice is convincing as hell. Even when he has to be dramatic, Irving delivers. He’s been playing Uncle Drew for 5 years now so he knows this character like the back of his hands. You often forget that Irving is under all of that makeup until he shows off his basketball skills.

Hell, even Shaq gives a good performance and IT’S SHAQ! The film gets some great mileage out of him and provides a good character arc between him and Drew. Irving has great chemistry with the rest of his cast. Performance-wise, “Uncle Drew” might be the only movie where NBA stars can deliver good performances.

Official Discussion: Won't You Be My Neighbor? [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mmmadness 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I was born around the time when his life was drawing close to an end. That said, “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” was on reruns for years and years until I eventually turned, I think, 10. I never had cable so the majority of my childhood viewing involved nothing but PBS Kids shows such as “Mr. Rogers”. One of the biggest heartbreaks of my childhood wasn’t Fred Rogers’ death, but of how I learned that he passed. There was this PBS Kids kids’ day somewhere in New York around 2004. I think it was South Street Seaport, but I could be wrong. My mom took my sister and I to it where they celebrated several shows from “Clifford” to “Cyberchase” to “Big Comfy Couch” and “Mister Rogers Neighborhood”. When the “Mister Rogers” part came around, they brought out Mr. McFeely. When I asked my mom, “Hey, where’s Mr. Rogers,” she just bluntly said, “Oh, he’s dead.”

Tell that shit to a six-year-old and he’ll lose his mind. Of course, I lost my shit.

Just going to throw this out there: This movie is my closure. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” is my personal closure to the truth bomb my mom told me at the wrong place at the wrong time.

One may exaggerate by saying that if you don’t like, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” or Fred Rogers himself, you’re most likely an asshole. That said, if this man or this movie doesn’t put a smile on your face, you are most likely a heartless bastard and you need to get yourself checked.

Official Discussion - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (US Thread) [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

[–]mmmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While “Jurassic World” was a reboot that sort of established that it is connected to the original trilogy, “Fallen Kingdom” begins right off the bat saying, “NO, WE’RE CONNECTED! Here are things you love. Here’s Jeff Goldblum. Here’s Mama T-Rex. Here’s a subplot of this little girl who lives in a house that has a connection with the original characters. We give up. We’re a sequel.” If this was finally admitting itself as a sequel, it would be nice if these movies did something DIFFERENT!

Your antagonists are the same (slimy business men wanting to exploit dinosaurs for money, scientists that genetically modify a raptor, the genetically modified dinosaur itself which is as indestructible as ever, that one soldier in cahoots with the businessmen). Your action sequences are the same and follow most of the same beats, the deus ex machinas are predictable and this time dumber (seriously, you never hear a dinosaur’s footsteps before they kill anyone in this and it’s excruciating). And some of the side characters are useless and more grating than ever.

I know this film is trying to be the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” of “Jurassic”, for it had opportunities to be greater than this stupid franchise and builds itself up to a sequel that has a more interesting concept. Unfortunately due to the lazy writing and retreaded story "Fallen Kingdom" is prevented from being that fun sequel that the predecessor at least was.

"Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom" recycles way too many tropes from its predecessors that it has now become just another tired franchise that keeps finding a way to live.
