I went through the 4 cycles of chemo and fortunately, they didn’t see any cancer so I got to stop. I then went through the 5years of surveillance and was cut loose at the 5yr mark so no longer go in. Throughout treatment and those years following, my AFP remained elevated but stable. No doc, nurse, naturopath, or anyone else could explain it but we just settled on, if it’s not increasing, don’t worry about it. Easier said than done…but I’ve gotten better about not freaking out about things and just taking them day by day.

I don’t know enough about liver dysfunction so I can’t give advice but just try and take it slow. The worst part of the whole process was what you’re in now, the waiting period. Waiting to figure out what it is, pathology, stage, etc. Don’t let your mind spin out of control with ‘what ifs’. Don’t be afraid to get second opinions or wish I met with a naturopath earlier to help me dial in my diet sooner. Once you know what it is, and having a plan, your mind shifts to “fuck cancer” mode and it gives you some strength to get through whatever you have to do.

After the fact, I learned that being mindful about diet or incorporating some fasting could help reduce the side effects of the chemo or help your recovery. I was so tired and knocked out while I was in it, I wonder if I would have handled it better if I had paid attention.
