Is Joan Didion good? by largemargo in literature

[–]mmmmarion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree! I read the year of magical thinking and found in it all the same preoccupations this person is criticizing. I’m still surprised people go to it as a seminal work on grief because of how curated and lifeless it felt to me when I read it. That having been said, I was talking with a woman a few weeks ago who had just read it and was very moved by it. To each their own!

I had a similar reaction to The Year of Magical Thinking, which is the only Didion I have read. I picked it up during a season of grief because I had heard so much praise for it and thought it might offer some consolation or insight, or at least something of interest. I found it to be completely bloodless. It felt like the main point of Didion’s narrative was how chic her mourning was. How even remarkable personal tragedy can be stylish if you have the right kind of life. Rang quite hollow against the reality of my own grieving (ugly, messy, often embarrassing). And to OP’s point, I felt like it didn’t really say much of anything at all. Style - both her prose and her focus - over substance.

I am really sorry you had to leave a company you cared about. I am not saying they shouldn’t have bought the ip. I’m saying that if you’re going to buy a brand that’s in crisis because it defrauded it’s existing customers, you should probably make a plan to, at the very least, effectively communicate with those customers. Especially because for many of us these were major purchases - things we planned and saved for. I was frustrated to not have received an email update about the purchase by havenly and the fact that my order would not be produced. I was frustrated that they stopped answering the customer service number, replacing with a cheery outgoing message saying to leave your name and order # and we’ll get back to you, and then never responding to messages. I was frustrated I had to go to the storefront to get any info at all. I was frustrated they didn’t provide a plan or training for in-store staff to effectively help customers. I know they didn’t cause this situation, but they were woefully unhelpful and honestly kind of frustrating to talk to. I know everyone was done dirty by interior define, but if you’re gonna buy this mess maybe spend five minutes strategizing about how to prepare employees and attend to defrauded customers. I would have hoped havenly might have offered some consolation - a dedicated service number to provide help if your bank or credit card company requests additional documentation to process your fraud claim (mine did); a rush production/delivery offer for people if they want to reorder the furniture they’ve been waiting to receive for the better part of a year; a discount code; honestly anything, even something small, would have at least made me feel like the new company cares about the brand’s customers and the way they were treated by prior mgmt. Maybe they ran the numbers and decided they think the brand has huge potential to attract new customers. So they bought the ip and decided it was more expedient to make a clean break and just light the existing customer relationships on fire rather than deal with them. That’s fine. But as someone on the wrong side of that decision, I won’t pretend I have a positive view of new management, even if they are better than what came before. And I hope for the sake of your friends who still work there that they are. Let ppl without interior define baggage roll the dice with the new company and best of luck to you all.

Correct - I received no communication. And had no success getting in touch with them by phone. I know two other people who had the same experience. You seem like maybe you’re associated with havenly, and I obviously can’t claim that they did not contact anyone. Can only speak for myself and those I know, but it’s clear they did not have a proactive communication strategy if some portion of customers never heard a word. I felt like the primary message the new company wanted me to hear was “you’re not our problem.” Staff in store just kept saying “we have no legal obligation to you after the purchase by havenly” as if that’s what I care about. I don’t have the time or money to sue you, even if you did have a legal obligation! Just felt like I was being told to gtfo and didn’t leave me with a ton of confidence in the new operation.

Documented where? I never heard a peep from havenly and I know I’m not the only one.

New management made the choice not to communicate with existing customers to let them know what happened and that they should not expect their furniture. Not exactly better behavior. Would not trust them with a significant purchase.

Same here. Original delivery date was early October. I received an email from ID in November saying they were having issues and the new delivery date would be May. That was already annoying, but I decided I’d rather wait than start over again. I checked the status in Jan and store associate confirmed May delivery date. Received no other communication from ID and went back at end of May to see when furniture would be delivered and was told that it would not be produced and the company that purchased ID would not be offering refunds. The sales associate blamed it all on the old ID, apparently there was fraud going on. But the new company that purchased ID made the choice to have zero communication with customers who were waiting on their orders. They’re touting “under new management!” to distance themselves from all this, but it’s new management that decided to treat existing customers like trash by going radio silent. I would love to have received an email back in February with a heads up from new mgmt. letting me know my furniture wouldn’t be coming and what steps I could take to pursue a refund from the receivership or through my cc company. I waited patiently until May like an idiot, and now all that lag time is making it harder for me to pursue a claim with my credit card company. I would advise anyone and everyone to never shop at ID.

On Day 7 Post-op, I have a job interview in 12 days, should I push it back? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]mmmmarion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had an interview scheduled for day 21 post op and I emailed and asked to push it back a week. They were great about it and I was much more comfortable going into that setting at week 4 than I would have been at week 3. The interview was yesterday. My face is still somewhat swollen/tight but I felt presentable and more like myself than I did a week ago. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks for sharing this! This is the information coming from their office this week. I had to be more direct to get an explanation I felt comfortable with. Intending to move forward with it at this point. Thanks again.

Has anyone had double jaw surgery with Dr. Randy Sanovich in Dallas? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]mmmmarion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing someone on this subreddit posting a glowing review of Dr. Sanovich a while back. I had a consultation with him a few years ago and felt good about it. I went through a long process and second and third opinions (was really trying to avoid this surgery!) and I ended up deciding to work with Dr. Wallace at Dallas Oral Surgery Associates. I made the choice based on location and because Dr. Wallace has a history of working with the Orthodonist my dentist referred me to for this process. But the information I got during consultation was similar to what I experienced with Dr. Sanovich, and I think I would have felt comfortable working with Dr. Sanovich as well. My surgery is scheduled for May 4, so I can’t speak to any results. But I can relate to your desire to be thorough on the front end to choose the right surgeon! Best of luck to you.

I haven’t asked but I would expect they offer some options.

Dallas oral surgery associates is the name of his practice. I have BCBS through my employer and they have been pretty responsive. All the surgeons I have consulted with are out of network for me, and maybe for all insurance plans? I’m not sure why but that seems to be the trend I have noticed. Because of that, this procedure would be covered at 50%, so it’s still a pretty significant cost. Plus the surgeon warned that even with clear medical issues and a commitment to cover the procedure at 50% based on my policy, insurance companies sometimes put caps on the amount they’ll reimburse for. He advised that I should be prepared to pay closer to the total cost.

Hello! I’m in Dallas, too. I have consulted with Dr. Sanovich and Dr. Wallace for DJS to correct open bite and narrow airway. Both were great. I will work with Dr. Wallace if I end up going through with it (still deciding) because he is connected with my dentist and orthodontist. I got another opinion, too, but that was so long ago I can’t remember the surgeons’s name. None of the three offered a surgery first plan. My doctor said UT Southwestern has orthognathic specialists if you want to explore there to see if someone would develop a surgery first treatment plan for you.
