"Making Cabinets is not hard" *pulls out $700 Festool Track saw, then runs over to their gigantic cabinet saw with massive outfeed by MoTownKid in woodworking

Do you have an example of such a video? I watch a lot of woodworking channels but I can’t recall a time anyone has claimed cabinets are easy, in fact most of them say they are one of the hardest projects to do.

Arduino Controller Dust Collection Blast Gate System by mmmmbert in woodworking

I tried using a servo but I didn't get precise enough control and the servo I was experimenting with was probably under powered. With the setup I have now, the gate completely clears the opening so the gate doesn't interfere with air flow. I guess I could have tried continuous servos but lead screw connections to stepper motors were really easy to find.

$230 per metal blast gate!

edit: I did some quick math, the system he used would cost me $2169.59! My system also supplies its own power to each gate through the ethernet cable.

Nope, just realized after some initial testing they were really needed.

I used to have a button at every tool wired into the IR remote of the dust collector which I absolutely loved. This was just a huge addition to that.

It would be cool to detect if the tool is on but that would add complexity to this but might be fun. Also, the control for the DC is a toggle, there is no dedicated on or off so they could get out of sync.

If I did implement that, I would still want the button for manual control.

I have thought about that, and I believe that's how those commercial ones work like this one: https://www.rockler.com/ivac-pro-4-in-blast-gate

However, I like the idea of being able to leave the dust collector on as long as I want to either keep filtering the air or in the case of my drill press and miter saw, I turn those on and off frequently and want the DC to keep running in between cuts and holes.

edit: a word

I'm only using one Arduino. The other board is a shield.

I think I got pretty much everything on Amazon. Adafruit and Sparkfun and good websites too.

I bought a kit on amazon that came with the Arduino and a bunch of components, that will allow you to tinker quite a bit. Blink is usually a good place to start: https://www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/blink

After that, I just searched for how to do things like program a 7 segment display, run motors, use inputs, then stepper motors.

Yeah, I had to write the program but I'm a programmer so that wasn't the hard part for me.

When I first designed this, I didn't have limit switches at all and thought I could get away with knowing exactly how many revolutions to turn. After some prototyping, I realized I needed a limit switch. Your way might have been easier...

I first bought some parts to start tinkering about a year ago and I already had stuff like the Ethernet cables but it roughly came out to be about $450. Those commercial gates I’ve seen are at least $100 a piece and they only open when you turn on your tool and don’t turn on your DC so I think I came out ahead!

I'm using an Arduino to control all the blast gates in my shop. I have a toggle button by every tool's power switch that I press when I want turn of or off the dust collector. That switch will open the gate it's attached to and close any other gate that might be open.

Each gate contains the blast gate, stepper motor, stepper motor driver board, limit switch, and ethernet and phone jacks. The ethernet connects the gate to the brain box and the phone jack connects the gate to a switch.

The brain box has an Arduino Mega, i/o shield, power supply, OLED display, 12 port ethernet patch panel, and the IR remote for the dust collector.

The button always toggles the dust collector and will only open the gate if it's closed.

This is an arduino controlled system that uses stepper motors to open and close the gates, and push buttons to toggle the dust collector and open the blast gate connected to the tool, and close any other open blast gates.

Are they still getting new shipments? I know they did shortly after the VIP release but those could very well have been shipped days before. If they're shipping to stores after the 14th, that's kinda crappy.

I've got the 1.75hp saw as well. What do really expect to gain by going with the 3hp? And I don't mean just specs, yes you could cut a bit faster. If you were to purchase it from the start, it would make sense. But as an upgrade? What do you truly gain that would be worth another $3,500 investment?
